The process engineer position is responsible for determining operations to produce products and develops processes to ensure quality, cost and efficiency requirements are met. He/She collects production data and applies standard scientific and statistical methods to analyze, document, and diagram production processes. Identifies process bottlenecks and devises solutions to resolve. Recommends changes or upgrades to equipment, work methods, or other aspects of the process to improve efficiency and utilization of resources including labor, energy and raw materials. This position troubleshoots problems with production in both in-house and subcontractor environments and takes corrective action. The process engineer also researches the available technologies and process that will assist in improvement of the current processes
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
Monitor Die Casting, Nickel/Cu plating and annealing sub processes and operating systems to assure defect free process steps.
Create/edit/maintain necessary documentation including working instructions, workmanship standards and process documents, and ensure they are followed.
Responsible for equipment calibration and maintenance monitoring.
Assess the availability of raw materials/chemicals and their safety and environmental impact.
Support the conversion of small-scale processes into commercially viable large-scale operations.
Monitor and improve the efficiency, output and safety of processes through observations and measurements as well as by collecting and interpreting data from other technical and operating personnel.
Work closely with other specialists (including scientists) to implement process improvements.
Assume responsibility for safety/environmental issues and ongoing performance of processes.
Configure and optimize existing prototype processes into production processes from inception through to start up and certification
Design, run, test and upgrade systems and processes.
Develop best practices, routines and innovative solutions to improve process efficiencies and quality of output
Manage cost and time constraints.
Perform risk assessments
Proven work experience in process engineering
Proven track record and working knowledge in medical device industry
Good knowledge of lean Manufacturing, six sigma and ISO methodology
Excellent technical skills
Knowledge of process related standards
Experience in process simulations
Familiarity with health and safety regulations
Analytical thinker with interpersonal skills
Preferred experience with Zinc/air battery, die casting, electroforming and electromechanical assembly.
BS degree in Engineering

Job responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Modify customer or TMP CAD files
Use laser to cut parts to drawing specifications.
Make modifications to programs to improve cutting performance
Use deburring tools to finish parts before inspection
Use laser to cut stencils
Clean, polish, and electroplate stencils
Assemble stencils into finished products
General maintenance of laser
Inspection of stencils and parts per customer requirements and established processes.
Assist in other departments as required
De-paneling and packaging of parts
Prepping and finishing of metal through chemicals
Operation electroforming and photolithography equipment
Basic Machining Skills
Must have good computer skills and good work ethic
Basic math and problem-solving skills
Additional training is offered, AutoCAD is a must.

Job Duties include, but are not limited to:
Calculate and set controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, or enter commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media
Operate the following equipment; part separator, size reduction device (SRD), QC equipment, spray booth, grinders, edge mill and laser welding machine to machine stampers to specification
Control electroforming bath chemistry by adding and mixing appropriate chemical additives and adjusting plating parameters.
Observe all equipment during operation to detect malfunctions or out of tolerance machining and adjust machine controls or controls media as required
Verify conformance of raw materials, in process materials and finished work piece to specifications using precision measuring instruments and by completing a visual inspection. Interpret this information to troubleshoot and make appropriate changes
Use electronic databases to maintain process data, quality data, and material use information
Initiate troubleshooting activities for equipment and process, especially when quality of stampers are not within specifications. Follow through with corrective actions until process and equipment are capable of producing stampers that meet all quality specifications
Participate and support lean initiatives such as 5S, standard work, and continuous improvement
Assist with the design, installation, and scale-ups of new or modified equipment and new product development
Perform daily and preventative maintenance, support, and inspection on tooling equipment. Maintain general cleanliness of tooling facility
Prepare, complete, and report results of experiments or R&D jobs defined by Process Engineers
Write documentation and provide training related to this job.
Understand fundamental concepts of precision machining and apply knowledge to advancement of processes. Suggest improvements
Start up and shutdown equipment for routine and emergency needs
Comply with all department, plant, and corporate EHS and security policies, standards, guidelines, and procedures. Complete and maintain current EHS training requirements for the job position. Properly dispose of hazardous and non hazardous waste as required by 3M waste procedures and programs
Perform other duties as assigned
This Position Will Require:
Working holidays as needed
Short notice shift coverage
Possess a High School Diploma/GED or higher
Possess a one (1) year technical diploma in CNC Tool Operations OR a minimum of three (3) years machine shop experience
Completion of an apprenticeship in a machine shop environment running CNC equipment
Ability to read blueprints and mechanical drawings
Mechanical and electrical skills to troubleshoot, adjust, repair and maintain equipment
Knowledge of basic Windows-based operating systems
Ability to prioritize daily work activities and interpersonal skills to work with personnel at all levels of the organization
Attention to detail in order to perform stringent visual inspections

We currently have a Chemical Materials Engineering Co-op position available in our Vergennes, VT location.
This position will be supporting the TRL3 to TRL6 activities for replacement of hexavalent chromium sulfuric acid anodize sealing and chemical conversion coating with trivalent chrome chemistry.
Activities to include:
Validation of previously developed bucket scale processing to full scale tank processing
Design, execute, and document structured tests to resolve process inconsistencies
Reporting on process development and qualification testing and results
Documentation of production process flow and process spec limits
Over-see the production of development and qualification test articles
Coordinate in-house and outsourced testing – salt fog, paint adhesion, coating weight, electrical conductivity, IGA
Comfort with conducting manual titration methods for verification of automated spectrophotometric techniques for bath concentration
Comfort working in a production plating environment, providing guidance to production plating operators regarding new processes
Ability to work independently and conduct self-directed efforts towards an overall project goal
Manufacturing process scaling from bench scale (1 gal) to full production line (400 gal)
Understanding of non-hexavalent chromium corrosion protection of aluminum by anodic films and chemical conversion coatings
In-depth understanding of precision cleaning, surface activation, and chemical processing of multiple aluminum alloys
Potential exposure to electroless nickel plating and nickel electroforming processes
Understanding of the documentation requirements for compliance with company and NADCAP quality systems
