The Boston University Department of Mechanical Engineering anticipates two openings for tenure-track junior faculty positions, pending approval by the Provost. These positions are in Emerging Areas of Mechanical Engineering such as Interfacial Fluid Dynamics, Sustainable Energy Storage and Systems, Smart/Active Materials, and Digital Manufacturing.
The Mech E department is collaborative and multi-disciplinary with strong expertise in systems and control, biomechanics, MEMs/NEMs, nanofluidics, advanced materials, and nanomedicine. The department is further strengthened by its affiliation with the Division of Materials Science and Engineering and the Division of Systems Engineering. The Staff Mechanical Engineer – Thermal Engineering shall be responsible for the design of high-precision mechanical probe card components and assemblies, and for performing thermal and thermo-mechanical analyses (stress, deformation) on complex assemblies. Candidates must be experienced in solid modeling and generating detailed part/assembly drawings with appropriate use of GD&T, and highly skilled in FEA analysis (thermal and structural) to determine structural deformation caused by relative thermal expansion of various system components. Some familiarity with CFD software tools would also be beneficial to model heat transfer and to determine transient and/or equilibrium temperature gradients throughout the probe card assembly. The candidate will generate sophisticated mathematical algorithms to predict probe array thermal expansion as a function of various thermal boundary conditions. The candidate must have a strong understanding of mechanical and thermal properties of materials, and be capable of specifying component material selection for optimal performance. The candidate must be capable of designing Joule heating elements (ie. kapton heaters). Predictive mathematical algorithms and FEA simulations will be validated and fine-tuned using empirical data collected in the lab, so hands-on experience with sensors, lab equipment, data acquisition, and data analysis is also strongly desired.

Thermal and structural FEA analysis, and tuning of FEA models to enhance correlation with empirical data
Development of mathematical models to predict system thermo-mechanical behavior using FEA and empirical results, for a variety of design parameters and boundary conditions
PhD or M.S. in Mechanical Engineering
8+ years professional work experience in the areas of precision mechanical design and thermal engineering in a related high-tech industry (ie. semiconductor, disc drive, aerospace, medical device, etc.)
Professional work experience addressing thermal and thermo-mechanical related issues, with strong understanding of solid body heat transfer, thermal expansion, and thermo-mechanical deformation
Strong proficiency with 3D CAD design software, such as SolidWorks (preferred) or equivalent
Proficiency with ANSI GD&T standards, with demonstrated ability to create fully-detailed part drawings with thorough communication of design intent
Strong proficiency with structural and thermal FEA simulation software tools, such as ANSYS Workbench (preferred)
Familiarity with CFD software tools, such as ANSYS Fluent
Outstanding knowledge of fundamental engineering and physics principles, and capability of performing hand calculations to validate software simulation results
Hands-on experience in a lab or manufacturing environment, and experience with DOE (Design of Experiments) and practical knowledge of instrumentation/sensors (thermocouples, data loggers, control systems, etc.), data acquisition equipment, and data analysis software (ie. LabVIEW)
Good understanding of thermal and mechanical material properties, and capability of material specification for optimal performance
Experience with MATLAB, Mathcad, Python, or other programming language
Experience with statistical data analysis and statistical process control (SPC)
Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools (Windows, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, Project)
Excellent written and verbal communications skills
Ability to perform well in a fast-paced and dynamic work environment
