Lifetrack Early Childhood Program Expansion Vista (Csp)
Lifetrack's mission is to strengthen resiliency in families experiencing the greatest disparities in education, health, employment, and income. Lifetrack's Families Together program serves the Frogtown and East St.
Paul areas, which have the highest concentration of families experiencing generational poverty in the Twin Cities. In 2016, 75% of the families we served lived at or below 100% of federal poverty guidelines; 87% of our families came from communities of color. Our families' lives are a series of daily crises: 75% of mothers report mental health concerns; two-thirds experience household domestic violence and/or are homeless; almost 90% are teen mothers, single mothers, have low educational attainment, or report incarceration of a parent.
Currently, more than 95% our preschool families are involved with Child Protective Services. As a consequence, our children have exposure to Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE), defined as traumatic events experienced by a child, such as abuse (physical, sexual or verbal), neglect (physical/emotional) and household dysfunction (mental illness, substance abuse, violence, divorce, incarceration of a household member). These experiences undermine resiliency: Children whose basic needs are not being met learn to stop asking for what they need. When bonds with a parent are disrupted, children may not develop language skills needed to communicate their needs, self-concept and confidence needed to learn and problem solve, or social skills needed to interact with others.
This results in developmental, cognitive, and social emotional delays that require significant therapeutic interventions. Lifetrack's Families Together Program is designed to mitigate the long term-effects of ACE by providing education, interventions and support to both children (Therapeutic Preschool) and their families (Home Visiting), to end generational cycles of trauma. In 2016, Families Together served 232 children in 162 families.
