Duties and Responsibilities:
Sunoptics, an Acuity Brands division, manufactures prismatic skylights among other daylighting solutions. As part of that process, plastic resin is extruded into flat prismatic sheet. The position is located in Sacramento, California. The below job description covers the primary duties associated with operating that type of equipment:
Individual will be responsible for safely starting up, operating, and shutting down a single screw extrusion line with all supporting drying equipment. Speed, temperature, pressure, and other parameters must be monitored and adjusted based on sheet type and quality. Specific quality measurements must be documented and graphed on set frequencies.
Individual will be responsible for contributing to a lean, continuous improvement culture. Driving safety, quality, and productivity in their work space.
Individual will be responsible for training back up operators.
This position, or classification, does provide opportunity to learn how to operate and set up other types of equipment used in the manufacturing of prismatic skylights.
Oversees functions of the Cereal Plant Department to maximize and maintain optimum efficiency. Operators sophisticated/complex types of electrical/motor driven machinery and is responsible to synchronize the various machinery components of product process. Monitors incoming raw material to produce bulk-manufactured goods that meet food safety standards as set forth by Arrowhead Mills. Communicates with line workers, quality inspector and maintenance personnel to create a pleasant environment and promote good morale.
Tasks are to be completed while maintaining the highest safety, food safety and quality, cost and GMP standards in a high speed manufacturing environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Conduct pre-start safety and sanitation inspections, per pre post operation form, HACP forms if applicable and record results
Communicate with quality control's line inspector to meet relevant standards of the quality control department
Frequently monitor magnet. Report and document findings to QC or Production Manager.
Maintain clean work areas, including disposal of trash and cardboard at the end of shift.
Make sure all products in container(s) are covered to avoid contamination at the end of shift.
Feed buckets shall be emptied into designated containers daily.
Frequently perform scheduled allergen cleanups. Refer to and follow "Allergen Cleanup Procedures". Notify QC or Production Manager for post cleaning inspection and documentation before startup of allergen free production run.
Has broad discretionary authority to insure line is functioning safely and properly and to shut down the machinery when conditions warrant
In accordance to Allergen Program, identify all allergens and apply allergen (color-coded) tote bags for bulk filling.
All equipment/ area shall be cleaned according to Master Cleaning Schedule frequency.
Ensure proper lot codes/identification tags are on all outgoing bulk manufactured goods.
Gather packaging components and raw ingredients needed for next scheduled production run. Notify Production Manager of any inaccuracies or deficiencies
Add temporary hold tags to pallets in need of Allergen Testing.
Communicate with Production Manager to determine planning department's production run on appropriate production line, preventative maintenance schedule, and Master Cleaning Schedule.
Control and document all relative materials used, including lot numbers and cases produced at close of production. Complete work order and return to Production Clerk.
Inspect line and release for production of scheduled work order
Monitor production and report quantities produced. Document downtime.
Continuous evaluations of process to improve efficiencies and cut costs.
Ensure company policies are carried out in production in a safe working environment.
Train personnel with proper pallet configurations, packing efficiencies to maximize productivity levels and continue the opportunity for constant improvement in specific areas of work performance that are required to cut overall production cost.
Responsible for reporting food safety and quality issues and initiate action.

Principal Accountabilities for position:

The Extruder Operator must perform a skilled level of work in the application of a compounded rubber stock that is applied to a customer roll through the extrusion process. Assignments are received in the form of written instructions through the schedule board and the plant factory order. Work methods and procedures are determined by company policy thru the SPI manual. On the job training will be provided that meets these specification and requirements and the employee is expected to maintain these standards after completion of training period.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
To operate an extrusion line in a safe and orderly manner at Standard Operating Conditions (SOC) to manufacture a quality product in the most efficient manner possible.
Operate equipment to produce finished goods to production specifications.
Understand and be able to safely STOP equipment during normal conditions and during and emergency situation. Know how to E-Stop the machine.
Set Machine up to SOC using the appropriate conditions found in SAP
Use the Human Machine Interface(HMI) to set run conditions and adjust as necessary within SOC to safely make a quality product
Understand and perform winder Function and tension adjustment as necessary to ensure quality roll profile
Perform Rate adjustments with in SOC allowances.
Understand Blender Operation, and perform Cleaning, Adjustments, and Changeover
Understand Treater operation, and perform Cleaning, Adjustments, and changeover
Perform Line start up and Line shut down
Understand and safely operate extruders
Winder and extrusion line threading with rope or film
Understand and safely purge extruders, and change screen packs with specified screens.
Follow all EAT or standard operating procedures(SOP) to safely and efficiently operate the line
Understand and perform a bubble pull to get line into production
Understand and operate deflate, winder, and secondary nips
Set up and Safely handle edge ripper or slit in line blades as applicable
Use the trouble shooting guides to identify and solve extrusion issues including but not limited to gels and wrinkles.
Perform line changeover activities to safely and efficiently change over from one product to the next.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION – PURPOSE OF ROLE:
Set up, calibrate, operate, monitor and perform basic trouble shooting of extrusion and auxiliary equipment to produce quality products to Blue Buffalo's specifications.
Operate extrusion equipment in a safe manner that meets or exceeds production goals.
Make equipment adjustments when necessary.
Change over extrusion equipment following all safety and sanitation procedures.
Minimize scrap/waste during change overs.
Evaluate the finished product quality by visually inspecting the pet food both at the extruder and the dryer to include proper cook, odor and product size. Make adjustments as necessary to correct any issues related to the quality of the product. Visually inspect the finished product at the cooling conveyor. Ensure the product is going to the correct bin.
Record all process checks as required.
Collaborate with QA to ensure that issues during the shift are being addressed and that the product is meeting all target specifications. Make adjustments as necessary and involve others as necessary.
Maintain the extruder log.
Monitor downtime and document downtime by cause.
Collaborate with packaging lead and mill room operator to maximize efficiencies, minimize downtime and maximize production capabilities.
Ensure adherence to all lockout/tag out procedures.
Review extrusion requirements and specs for the run to include a review of the formula to ensure that proper coatings (wet & dry) are being applied. Identify any inventory concerns and bring them to the attention of the Shift Supervisor immediately.
Ensure that set-up parameters are updated on the PLC and match the correct formula.
Monitor and record on a timely basis wet density if necessary.
Perform daily/weekly sanitation of the extruder room area/floor as required.
Maintain clean work environment.
Proactively prepare for change overs by having die plates and knives ready ahead of time.
Operate the extrusion equipment at expected run rates and be able to calculate anticipated change over or shutdown times.
Perform all start-up and shut down activities.
Trouble shoot all problems.
Perform Food Safety checks and CCP monitoring activities as specified by HACCP.
