Hostler

The Hostler assists the Mounted Ranger Unit by providing care for the horses owned by the Ranger Department. The Hostler coordinates and carries out duties necessary for the safe and efficient operation of the animals, facilities, and equipment of the Mounted Ranger Unit.

Essential Functions

  • Evaluation of this position is based primarily on performance of the following essential functions, which include, but are not limited to:
  • Regular and predictable attendance is expected and required. All Cleveland Metroparks employees must be prepared to work flexible schedules, including evenings, weekends, and/or holidays as required.
  • Provides care and maintenance for all Cleveland Metroparks owned horses at two stables including: feeding, watering, grooming, stall cleaning, and exercising. Keeps a log of duties accomplished each day for horse maintenance including: horse record book, feed chart, blacksmith records, and equipment inspection records.
  • Inspects horses daily for symptoms of sickness or injuries, and keeps a record of health care and treatment on all horses, including: wrapping and unwrapping legs as needed, administering any medications and vaccinations, and other treatments as needed. Records and assists veterinarian and farrier during their visits.
  • Cleans, stocks, and keeps the office, main barn, outbuildings, and equipment in efficient working order: cobwebs barn and stalls, rakes aisles, and scrubs water tanks, feed buckets, and water buckets. Stocks the main barn and other barns as needed with hay, shavings, and other horse care supplies. Assists in the loading and unloading of horse care supplies
  • Assists the Mounted Ranger Unit with special events, parades, and demonstrations. Transports horses to event locations and loads and unloads horses from trailers. Provides barn tours for individuals and groups. Assists with the training of horses and riders for new rangers, and provides training on basic horse and stable duties for hostlers and interns.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required, supplemented by one year of experience working with the care of horses, or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders, including employees and the general public.
  • Ability to speak and write clearly, concisely and persuasively using correct grammar, spelling and punctuation with ability to communicate one-on-one or in group settings.
  • Ability to perform work with a high degree of accuracy and organization.
  • Management skills and strong business acumen, including problem solving, vision, ability to manage multiple programs and meet deadlines, collaboration, leadership, decision making and ability to analyze diverse facts and develop clear and concise reports and recommendations.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others.
  • Proficiency in software programs including all Microsoft Office programs.
  • Mature professional attitude and considerable discretion, including ability to manage confidential information.
  • Ability to perform with considerable independence and initiative.
  • Performs related duties as assigned or apparent.
