A Cement Finisher Worker does semiskilled work in mixing, placing, and finishing concrete surfaces; and may act as lead worker of a small crew.
Two years of full-time paid experience with the City of Los Angeles working as a helper to a Cement Finisher or Cement Finisher Worker; or
Two years of full-time paid experience in placing and finishing concrete.

The multiple-choice test will be proctored and administered on-line during a single session. Candidates invited to participate in the on-line multiple-choice test will be able to take the test from a remote location using a computer with a webcam and a reliable internet connection or will have the option to take the test onsite at a City facility. Candidates will receive an e-mail from the City of Los Angeles outlining the dates and specific steps on how to take the multiple-choice test on-line. It is anticipated that the remote proctored multiple-choice test will be administered between MONDAY, APRIL 22, 2019 AND MONDAY, APRIL 29, 2019, and between MONDAY, MAY 20, 2019 and MONDAY, MAY 27, 2019. Concrete Finisher III
Serves as lead worker in the preparation for construction, maintenance and repair of concrete projects. Performs a variety of the most difficult, complex and precise concrete duties to provide a pleasing appearance and a sound structure.
Examples of Duties
Interprets and transfers information from surveyors stakes, cut sheets and engineering plans to stake or pins that workers can follow for setting of forms. Sets lines and grades using surveying instruments, string line level, eye level and checks accuracy of established grades on forms before concrete is poured. Assures that concrete has proper slump and consistency during pouring operations.
Sets forms for curb and gutter and sidewalks. Insures that forms are set in accordance with established grade stakes. Builds and sets wooden forms and installs necessary stay braces, utilizing various types of wall ties and spreaders.
Pours concrete to specified depth-utilizing techniques, which will prevent the segregation of materials. Finishes by screening, floating, troweling, and brooming to provide a pleasing appearance and a sound structure.
Edges and cuts joint in concrete using appropriate tools. Finishes top surface of curb after forms have been removed using approved methods and tools.
Performs skilled, semiskilled, and unskilled labor duties as required. Performs pick and shovel work on road construction sites, loads and unloads stone, gravel, dirt, timber, heavy mechanical equipment, and warehouse supplies.
Operates a variety of motor vehicles: pickup truck, single and tandem dump trucks, with standard or automatic transmissions. Removes debris due to storms and removes snow and ice from city streets.
Assists the Streets Operations Supervisor in training Concrete Finisher I and II personnel in the proper methods and techniques for concrete finishing and safe operation of equipment in accordance with worksite safety requirements.
Performs related duties as required. Typical Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited high school or successful completion of the GED preferred. Extensive experience in concrete construction, maintenance, and repair work to include reading and interpreting engineering plans for curb and gutter, sidewalks, and roadways.
Extensive experience in planning curb and gutter layout from information from survey grade stakes and cut sheets. Thorough knowledge of environmental conditions affecting concrete pouring and curing; thorough knowledge of concrete mixing, form setting and finishing. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Knowledge of training and overseeing employees in appropriate work methods. Must possess a State of Virginia Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or must possess a valid State of Virginia Driver's license and obtain the CDL within 180 days of employment. Must have a satisfactory driver's record based on the City of Hampton's criteria.
Any person offered employment in this position shall be required to successfully pass testing for controlled substances. Any person offered employment in this position shall be required to successfully complete a Virginia Criminal History Background Check.
Performs duties under the direct supervision of the Streets Operations Supervisor. Occasional overtime required.
Some duties may be performed under adverse weather conditions; during nights, weekends, and holidays in emergency situations. This is a non-exempt position.
