This Technical Expert will coordinate and lead production operations on the manufacturing floor including taking a lead role in the qualification of process equipment, supporting development, clinical, and launch activities. This role is a key communication and technical interface between the GMP manufacturing teams in the plant and our partner organizations.
The initial focus of this role will be part of the Fermentation suite startup team to prepare the facility for operational readiness. This includes and not limited to support interviewing of manufacturing operations team, develop training, SOPs, batch records, and standard work. May also include commissioning and qualification of process equipment.

Ensure all safety and compliance procedures are followed at all times.
Participate in the development, execution, and issue resolution associated with process equipment Commissioning, Qualification and Validation.
Provide troubleshooting, technical support, and resolution of equipment, automation, and process issues on the manufacturing floor.
Write, revise, and own controlled documentation (SOPs, Manufacturing Procedures (MPs), Forms, Technical Reports, etc.)
Serve as SME for Fermentation cell culture operations.
Provide training to manufacturing staff on process and equipment.
Own Non-Conformances (NC) and Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPA), facilitate the drive towards continuous improvement in all Manufacturing areas.
Collaborate with Quality, Engineering, Process Development, Validation, and Operations to resolve manufacturing events in a timely manner.
Assure appropriate escalation to various levels of management when personnel and environmental safety, equipment functionality, product supply, or quality are at risk.
Collaborate with Quality, Manufacturing Managers, Plant Engineering, Process Development and Regulatory Compliance staff in cross-functional teams.
Participate in the design, development, and implementation of processes in support of the manufacturing floor.
Effectively uses process automation systems (i.e. Delta V and OSI/Pi Historian) and supporting business systems (i.e. Microsoft Dynamics/SAP/ERP Systems, Trackwise, Document Management Systems, Microsoft Sharepoint etc.)
HS diploma, Associates Degree, or BS/BA in Biotechnology, Microbiology, Cell Biology, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry or equivalent.
Requires a minimum 5+ years of experience in a biotechnology manufacturing or laboratory environment.
Prior experience in a Biological Pilot Plant, cGMP Clinical or Commercial Manufacturing setting
Prior experience of mammalian cell culture and/or microbial fermentation, harvest, chromatography and TFF processes.
Experience with Production Control Systems (i.e. DeltaV), ERP Systems (i.e. Microsoft Dynamics and/or SAP) and other business systems (Document Management Systems, LIMS, Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.)
Experience with Quality Management and Change Management Systems (i.e. Trackwise)
Ability to follow Standard Operating Procedures and work under minimal supervision.
Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to interface with computerized systems required.
Demonstrated capability to work as a team member in a matrix manufacturing team.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Must be able to climb flights of stairs, and be standing for ~1-2 hours at a time.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (75%)
Works with Winemaking and Cellar management to organize and prioritize and complete Red fermentation cellar activities. The position will support winemaking by monitoring wine quality during ferment and provide feedback when a defect or anomaly is identified.
Will lead red fermentation team (2-6 people) on day shift and performs cellar tasks including but not limited to pumpovers, additions, drain & return, drain & empty tanks for pressing, cleaning tanks in preparation for filling. May assist with writing of work orders, related to red fermentation. Ensures work is completed in a safe manner, maximizing quality of wines produced and is completed in an efficient manner.
May be asked to provide leadership in the Red Fermentation Cellar in the absence of the area lead.
Utilizes a system to visually communicate key daily red cellar activities and priorities.

May be asked to perform or assist with performing a range of cellar tasks as needed.

Lead Fermentation Specialist
Leidos is seeking a Fermentation Specialist who will lead a production team at a manufacturing facility in Silver Spring, MD. S/he will perform duties associated with the design, start-up, evaluation, validation, and maintenance of fermentation systems as they are applied to the fermentation of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. 15 total years' experience in the biotechnology field.
Must also have four years of managerial/supervisory experience.
Professional knowledge of the principles and practices applicable to fermentation and downstream processing.
Knowledge of operation of bioreactors from bench capacity to 400 liters.
Knowledge of operation of centrifuges, ultrafiltration, and cell disruption equipment.

To play a key role in day to day operations of the Fermentation department, in particular the manufacturing of microbial products, monitoring the downstream process of the fermentors.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: other duties may be assigned as needed.
Ensure standard operating procedures are followed and reviewed
Ensure batch records are completed
Pulling of correct raw materials for fermentation
Assist in monitoring of fermentation inventory
Assist in downstream processing of fermentors; (centrifugation, spray drying)
Assist in preventative maintenance of fermentation equipment
Ensure department is clean and organized at all times and free of hazards and safety violations
Operation of forklifts as required
Batching of media for fermentation runs
SIP, CIP of fermentors
Work odd shifts as required
Labeling of fermentation vessel pipes and valves
Participate in safety training programs
Monitoring of in process fermentation
Assist with microscopic observation of bacteria example: harvest of batch
Ensuring fermentation equipment is labelled
Using of the autoclave for fermentation addition bottles example: acid, base, defoamer bottles
Assist in the training of new technicians
Strong knowledge of pressure vessels
Strong knowledge of pump and pumping operations
The ability to identify different types of valves and how they operate, (both pneumatic and hand valves)
Strong trouble shooting skills in both mechanical and electrical applications
Basic sampling skills
Chemical Operator experience preferred
Preferred confined space, lock out tag out training
Experience working with boilers a plus
Experience working with PLC's and HMI a plus
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Must have at a minimum a high school diploma or GED
Must be proficient in Microsoft Word and Outlook
Must be able to lift 50lbs and stand for long periods at a time.

What you'll do:
Do you enjoy your days being full of variety? As a Production Operator you'll see a product's transformation from individual ingredients to finished product.
You'll follow instructions provided on a recipe card or "batch ticket" listing which ingredients you'll gather and the amount needed. If you're active, this is the role for you because you'll use your hustle for lifting and transporting bags of up to 50lbs of ingredients to other team members. Measure, weigh and stage ingredients
Move and transfer ingredients by hand, cart, or forklift (don't worry, we'll train you if not certified)
Sanitize all blending and packaging equipment

What you'll need to be successful and safe:
Because you'll be working with ingredients to specific standards, you'll have either a high school diploma or equivalent or previous work experience with measuring and documenting.
No need to join a gym! This role will require lifting 50lbs bags of ingredients by hand.
