Under minimal or remote supervision, performs routine and non-routine chemical and/or metallurgical analytical tasks at assigned site. May include team lead responsibilities and or autonomous interactions within area of expertise.

- Graduate from a medical laboratory technician training program accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES).

The duties include but are not limited to the following:
- Perform clinical laboratory tests in any one or a combination of areas as described in following sections of the laboratory: Hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, serology, microbiology, immunology, blood bank, and blood donor center.
- Calculate test results and measure prescribed quantities of samples during tests.
- Notice pertinent morphology/staining details of specimens under microscopic examination.
- Perform a wide variety of laboratory tests either manually or using automated instrumentation.
- Evaluate quality control information against measurable criteria in the performance of laboratory tests.
- Perform precise and accurate laboratory testing according to established laboratory procedures.
- Receive written requisitions from health care providers for routine and special laboratory tests.
- Set up and adjust laboratory equipment and apparatus.
- Obtain laboratory specimens directly from patients by venipuncture, instruct patient and staff on proper specimen collection.
- Add reagents or indicator solutions, and subject’s specimens to various laboratory operations according to established procedures.
- Prepare slides for microscopic analysis as necessary.
- Observe test reactions, changes of color, or formation of precipitates; studies or subjects treated specimens to automatic analyzing equipment to make qualitative and quantitative analysis.
- Record test results to flat logs and request slips and file reports in the electronic health record.
- Bring to the attention of the section supervisor, pathologist or general laboratory supervisor any unusual or grossly abnormal test result.
- Perform light general cleaning of work areas such as collection of trash, autoclaving of specimens, cleaning of bench tops and light dusting.
- Prepare specimens for transport to MTF laboratory or for other civilian/DOD reference laboratories.
- Prepare biological waste for proper disposal.
- Perform and document required equipment maintenance as required.

Notifies the supervisor if unable to solve the problem. Complies with established laboratory and hospital policies for universal precautions and safety procedures. When handling blood and/or bodily fluids, universal precaution procedures will be followed to minimize exposure to infectious diseases.
Safety policies and procedures will be followed when using chemicals. Performs phlebotomy (venipunctures, fingersticks, heelsticks, bleeding times) as appropriate for the patient (from age 0 to greater than 100 years) requiring this procedure. About the Position:
This position is located at Fort Riley, Kansas.
This position is being filled under the Expedited Hiring Authority for Shortage Category and/or Critical Need Health Care Occupations.
This position has a target to the GS-08 level. Employee may be non-competitively promoted to the next level without further competition upon meeting all regulatory requirements.
Design and fabricate removable prostheses.
Fabricate various orthodontic appliances.
Design and fabricate fixed prostheses using various materials.
Pour casts from all types of impression materials.
Read and Interpret dental prescriptions.

To qualify for this position, you must meet one of the following:
A. Specialized Experience:
One year of specialized experience which includes utilizing dental laboratory materials such as impression materials, plasters, ceramics, and/or porcelain; utilizing dental laboratory equipment such as hand tools, ovens, casting machines, and/or related equipment; and constructing dental prosthetic appliances, fixed prostheses, and/or removable prostheses. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service GS-05.
B. Education Substitution for Specialized Experience:
A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Dentistry.
C. Education Substitution for Specialized Experience: Successful completion of a full 4-year apprenticeship program consisting of at least 2000 hours a year.
D. Combination of Education and Experience:
A combination of education in B and experience in A may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 9. Add the two percentages.
E. Licensed Dentist: Licensed professional dentists will be considered qualified for any grade level if you have, in the aggregate, the required experience in dental laboratory procedures.
FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
