R&D Laboratory Support Technologist - Thin Film Deposition (Early/Mid-Career)
What Your Job Will Be Like
We are seeking a Lab Support Technologist to support research efforts related to physical vapor deposition process and atomic layer deposition (ALD). In this role, you will be contributing to a wide range of research and development projects creating coatings that have unique optical, tribological, electronic, or other functional properties.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
Support staff in safely operating and maintaining thin film deposition systems in support of prototyping activities
Support staff is safely operating and maintaining ALD deposition systems (commercial and custom built) in support of prototyping activities
Document work activities
Work in a team environment with limited guidance
Prepare substrates, clean substrates, design and build fixtures and masks, deposit coatings, clean systems, maintain/repair/troubleshoot systems, vacuum pumps, electronic controls, water systems, and gas delivery systems
Characterize coated samples utilizing a variety of techniques including ellipsometry, surface roughness, electrical properties, optical, stress measurements, etc. and able to maintain the characterization tools
Qualifications We Require
Associate's degree in a related technology field or a high school diploma plus 4 years' experience
Experience with electro-mechanical systems
Experience working in a laboratory environment
Able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q Clearance

Ability to work with a team as well as independently
Experience operating, trouble shooting, maintaining, and repairing high vacuum systems
Experience with creating and maintaining documentation

About Our Team
The Coatings and Additive Manufacturing Department provides scientific and engineering expertise in the areas of thin films, thermal spray deposition, cold spray deposition, vacuum system/component fabrication, laser machining and surface modification, precision engineering, and additive manufacturing for the Laboratories. Over 25 elements as well as numerous compounds and alloys can be deposited by sputter deposition and electron beam evaporation. Thin film properties can also be characterized. Thermal spray capabilities include both conventional (flame, plasma, twin-wire arc, HVOF) and advanced technologies: cold spray and low-pressure plasma spray. Precision engineering includes the design and fabrication of miniature and meso-scale devices, electrical discharge machining (EDM), diamond and laser machining, laser etching, micro-metrology, as well as technical consulting. Additive manufacturing encompasses both direct write (aerosol ink jet printing, extrusion casting, and conformal printing) and metal additive (powder bed and LENS).
