BASIC PURPOSE OF POSITION
Under general supervision, performs skilled work involving the installation of various types of vinyl flooring and carpet during construction, renovation or remodeling of various institutions and state offices; provides on-site supervision/training to lower level tile and carpet layers and unskilled helpers assigned to assist in various projects.
Prepares floor and/or wall surfaces by sanding, leveling, and dry-packing to accommodate necessary tile; prepares floors and/or walls for the installation of various types of carpet or acoustical wall coverings; installs shower pans; Installs vinyl composition floor tile and rubber cove base; cuts and trims to fit along wall edges, openings and projections; Installs carpet; measures and cuts carpeting to size according to floor sketches; cuts and trims carpet to fit along wall edges, openings and projections; Installs sheet linoleum; measures and cuts linoleum to size according to floor sketches; cuts and trims linoleum to fit along wall edges, openings and projections; Assists in installing ceramic wall and floor tiles; Removes existing wall and/or floor covering for renovations or remodeling; Operates sanding and grinding machines and ceramic saws; Assists with laying out working details of projects; provides on-site supervision/training to lower level tile and carpet layers and unskilled helpers; and Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSA's)
A full knowledge and understanding of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in vinyl composition tile (VCT) and carpet installation; of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade; and a basic knowledge and understanding of how to read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings and sketches; ability to lay out simple VCT and carpet projects; and Good manual dexterity and physical endurance to include the ability to climb ladders, scaffolding, etc.; work in high spaces, high noise areas, and/or in confined spaces; constant standing, kneeling, crouching, squatting, twisting, pushing and pulling; work with hand tools (up to 25 pounds) in positions above or below head; lift, carry, position and use tools and/or equipment (weighing up to 50 pounds) in awkward positions; withstand frequent jarring of the body caused by performance of duties; 150 pound lifting capacity; 100 pound push/pull capacity; and 50 pound carrying capacity, all on a frequent basis.
