Pipe Layer - Chapel Hill
PSNC Energy, A SCANA Company, is a regulated public utility engaged primarily in transporting, distributing and selling natural gas to approximately 552,000 customers throughout a 28-county service area in the north central, Piedmont and western areas of North Carolina. This Construction & Maintenance Department position is located in PSNC Energy's Chapel Hill Operations Center. The Construction & Maintenance Department is responsible for the construction, maintenance, and operation of the Company's natural gas distribution system.
The Construction and Maintenance Specialist installs pipe in ditches, manually digs around utilities, and pressure tests steel and plastic lines. This position is also responsible for participating in repair of third party damage to natural gas lines and various types of gas leaks, completing pipe maintenance activities, safely driving a company vehicle, setting up common Department of Transportation approved work sites and flagging traffic, maintaining truck inventory, and installing test charts.
Position may also require locating and operating activities. Duties are performed while working outside in varying weather conditions, may require the use of self-contained breathing apparatus equipment, and require some heavy lifting up to 70 lbs.
The successful candidate will possess a High School diploma (from a high school accredited by an organization that is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or one of the entities recognized by the U.S. Department of Education) or GED, a good mechanical aptitude including experience with common hand and power tools, the ability to use self-contained breathing apparatus equipment, a demonstrated knowledge of safety procedures, effective communication skills for customer interactions, and a willingness to work with others in a team environment.
A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a Commercial Driver's License within six months of employment are also required. Candidate will be expected to be available for natural gas emergency response after normal working hours, as needed. Basic computer skills are preferred. Bilingual candidates are preferred.

Major Role and Purpose
Support the members of the grading crew by laying pipe and drains to produce the highest quality product in the most efficient manner
Description of Duties
Ensure a safe work environment in compliance with all federal, state, local and company safety policies and procedures using the appropriate tools and equipment for the task.
Must have an understanding of how to lay water, sanitary sewer and storm drain pipe (both pressure and gravity).
Read and interpret grade instruments (ex. Rules, grade rods, carpenter levels and lasers).
Must be familiar with different types of pipe and fittings and their proper installation.
Must have an understanding of trenching and trench safety.
Ability to locate and avoid underground utilities
Shovel work, lifting pipes and operating compaction devices will be required on a continuous basis.

Conti is looking for Pipe Layers in the Fayetteville, North Carolina area.
Safely apply all techniques of pipe installation to include but not limited to; trenching, pipe layout, installing, grading or leveling, alignment, fitting, welding or sealing and finishing.
Install and repair sanitary and storm water sewer structures and pipe systems and configure pipe routes following written instructions or blueprints, and coordinating layouts with supervisors.
Dig trenches to desired or required depths, by hand or using trenching tools, cut pipes to required lengths and slide pipe into trenches and inspect places where pipes are fitted together to ensure pipes are spaced out properly and according to specifications.
Assist in the direction of pipe movement in preparation for welding and correctly align and position pipe sections to prepare them for welding or sealing using glue or welding equipment to ensure pipes are tightly fitted.
Check slopes for conformance to grade requirements and ensure pipes are fitted and aligned, using transit levels, grade rods or lasers and grade and level trenches or culverts using tamping machines and hand tools.
Pull out defective or misaligned pipes and cover pipes with dirt or other material as required and directed in accordance with plans.
Drill holes into pipes for auxiliary lines when required according to specifications and as directed.
Perform continual maintenance on pipes and replace those needing repair if required.
Be familiar with the utilization of magnetic or radio indicators were required.
Perform other duties as assigned
3-5 years' experience in underground pipe laying , 2-4 years' experience in road construction preferred
Ability to meet attendance schedule with dependability and consistency
Provide personal transportation to and from the jobsite
Ability to lift construction materials exceeding 50 lbs.
