Chief Aluminum Metallurgist
About This Position
In an exciting and challenging startup environment, the Metallurgist provides technical support to the Sales Department and EEC aluminum customers for all phases of aluminum operations, supports operations to ensure good quality procedures are in place, oversees trials of new materials and processes to ensure proper practices are being utilized, and provides metallurgical support to management personnel. This position reports directly to the General Manager.
In this role, the Chief Aluminum Metallurgist will identifying and improve operational problems, defining standard operating procedures, recruiting and training personnel to meet manufacturing and business requirements.
This position provides strategic direction for operations from a metallurgical perspective ensuring technological solutions to aluminum product development (including cost reduction and efficiency improvements) and requires interaction with several internal BU's, suppliers and customers. The successful candidate will be a hands-on, results oriented, innovative professional who seeks continuous improvement.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Stays constantly updated on latest equipment, techniques and materials, and makes recommendations on incorporation into plant operations.
Develops, implements and maintains the QMS, i.e ISO and AS systems
Plays a major role in customer relations and customer base development;
Develops chemistry recipes to satisfy operational performance and customer requirements;
Oversees the investigation and disposition of non-conforming material.
Perform failure investigations on customer returns/claims.
Maintains safe and healthy work environment by defining and enforcing standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations;
Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed;
Works in consultative fashion with other manufacturing/technical engineers to improve efficiency and effectiveness;
Abides by company policies and procedures; and
Provide Quality training for Ellwood employees.

Education and Experience
(Minimum) BS degree in Metallurgical/Material engineering, related field or equivalent work experience; (Master's Degree Preferred)
(Minimum) 8-10 years' experience in aluminum melting operations with 3-5 years (minimum) process and procedures development, capital equipment project management and installation experience;
(Minimum) 3-5 years' experience with 2x, 3x, 5x, 6x and 7x aluminum alloys; and
(Minimum) 3-5 years' experience with DC Casting Tables.
ISO 9000 Certification Experience
Experience with automotive standards (required)

Metallurgist Material Engineer
Supports globally Process Innovation/Technology, Product Engineering, Advanced Manufacturing, and Manufacturing Operations.
Independently, performs various complex and non-routine, standard and non-standard engineering duties which include leading manufacturing and process innovation activities, planning and design of new products and processes, improving manufacturing methods, supporting design changes and actively interfaces with customers and suppliers to maximize manufacturing capabilities.
Assignments require considerable knowledge of management practice and policy interpretation or a combination of education and experience that develops technical capability to independently evaluate, select and apply techniques and standards.
Based on the industry experiences since at least 5-8 years provides material expertise to support global organization including product design, manufacturing process issues, quality issues, and product/process innovation initiatives.
Provide expert knowledge of materials, non-destructive testing, destructive testing, heat treatment, coating, forming, stretch bending, extrusion, industry standards and all other common industry processes for metallic materials. Non-metallic materials are a plus.
Characterize and select materials to meet customer and engineering requirements.
Provide expertise to analyze product and process failures and provide and implement cost effective solutions.
Support innovation and advanced process development for all products.
Identify new material and process technologies to drive innovative ideas.
Network with suppliers, research organizations, and educational organizations globally to leverage new technology.
Support DFMEA and PFMEA initiatives.

Master's Degree in a Material Science, Metallurgy, Chemistry, or equivalent scientific field
Five to eight years of related industry experience.
70% experience in aluminum material and aluminum related process experience, additional steel metallurgist or other field such as welding experience welcome.
Strong understanding of aluminum, steel, and stainless steel. Basic understanding of automotive polymers.
Understanding basics of DFSS and Six Sigma Methodologies
History implementing new materials and resolving major issues in an automotive setting.

Gulfco is seeking a versatile Metallurgist with appropriate knowledge and experience in our Engineering Department.
The Metallurgical Engineer leads/facilitates processes to also address metallurgical issues both internally and at externally while facilitating the execution of Metallurgical Engineering principles. Responsibilities include applying chemistry and various branches of the engineering sciences to the design, development, or operation of processes and equipment used in the production process.
Minimum Requirements and Qualifications
Education and Experience
Bachelor's in Metallurgy, Metallurgical Engineering, or Material Science
One or more year's related work experience
Skills and Abilities
High regard for industrial safety with knowledge and ability to recognize hazards and apply safety procedures common to manual material handling and operating equipment, such as hazmat, MSDS, personal protective equipment, machine tool safety, and environmental regulations
Ability to use engineering computer applications, such as AutoCAD, and computer skills in Windows environment, such as MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
Background/knowledge in Lean manufacturing, continuous improvement, root cause analysis and corrective action
Analytical ability to collect, analyze and document data with problem solving ability to identify solutions and process improvements to difficult technical issues.
Effective written, verbal and communications skills, including persuasion and negotiation.
Interpersonal skills and ability to successfully lead and work effectively in a team environment.
Ability to multi-task and manage multiple and/or changing priorities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Develop material and process parameters to achieve desired end-product properties and attributes based up customer specifications.
Perform metallurgical testing and analysis.
Provide metallurgical expertise in the development of new products and processes.
Work as a team member to provide oversight and specialized insight into projects and issues related to metallurgical engineering.
Participate and/or facilitate root cause analysis and corrective action teams.
Drive data-based product capability assessments and process improvements, participating in continuous improvement efforts as identified by analyzing quality related performance statistics.
Perform quality assurance tasks and consultation to customers and management.
Research new products and methods to decrease costs and increase productivity.
Identify new alloys available for use and design methods for utilizations and processing.
Review and validate engineering drawings.
Produce regular interval and data analysis reports, such as material test reports, for publishing to internal and external customers.
Provide support for safety, health and environmental procedures.
