Lead Process Engineering – Furnace strategy, development, implementation, and execution processes.
Responsible for developing process flow diagrams, piping & instrument diagrams, mass & heat balances, basic piping system design, pump sizing, material handling methods, equipment, functional & installation specifications, as well as process instrumentation & control principles.
Responsible routine optimization and troubleshooting of issues regarding process technologies at a direct reduction iron plant including Furnace operations and Material Handling.
Provide integral support through process commissioning and start-up activities.
Develop and implement work schedules, test programs and special projects for the direct reduced iron processing operations, including sample plans, operating and analytical data requirements, and results analysis and reporting.
Assists with establishing Key Processing "Best Practices" to improve profitability, including: operating conditions, feedstock processing, hardware change recommendations, monitoring process conditions, and unit performance reporting/comparison (benchmarking).
Provide process control technical guidance and expertise to management, engineers, operating and lab employees on a daily basis.
Complex troubleshooting of plant processes (trends, communicating, hands-on field work and sampling).
Direct and coordinate work performed by engineering consultants and contractors working on test programs or special projects.
Ensure compliance to company and regulatory standards and procedures. Follow existing, or develop new, procedures to ensure compliance with company and regulatory directives, as well as sound contract management practices.
Manage, lead and work with multiple contract resources to execute process engineering strategies.

PURPOSE OF THE JOB
The successful furnace design engineer will fully own the process innovation and application of furnace design for OC Insulation glass melting. Design responsibilities will include refractory, steel, combustion and controls systems and safety systems for all electric and oxy – fuel melters. The engineer will lead project definition with plant team, linking capital delivery, sourcing and EHS to deliver turnkey furnace systems for Owens Corning Insulation. The Furnace Mechanical Engineer position interacts with other technical groups on site (process engineering, maintenance, turnaround and capital project groups), corporate technical networks and peers, and vendors/suppliers as needed to resolve problems and improve plant reliability and performance.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Serve as site subject matter expert for high level Fired Equipment issues and long-range plans.
Perform routine Infrared (IR) scans, including generating IR reports, of site furnace tubes and any Process hot spots that develop.
Perform API-579 heater tube creep damage assessments to establish remaining life and next inspection date.
Ownership of the Fired Heater database / spreadsheet which documents heater design parameters.
Troubleshoot mechanical issues with furnaces, flares, thermal oxidizers, combustors, burners, stacks, FD / ID fan air pre-heat systems, flue gas analyzers.
Assist Unit Inspectors and the turnaround group with internal inspection of furnaces during outages and turnarounds. Visual Inspection shall focus on radiant and convection tubes, refractory, burners, burner tile, tube guides, skin thermocouples, etc.
Monitor equipment performance and make improvement recommendations.
Perform annual heater boiler MACT testing and heater optimization.
Perform annual heater audits.
Provide annual heater training to Operators and Engineering.
Apply data analysis techniques to develop engineering solutions to repetitive failures and other problems that adversely affect plant operations including capacity, quality, cost, safety, environmental, and regulatory compliance issues.
Provide technical support/expertise within your discipline in the design and installation stages of projects for new assets and modification of existing assets to minimize life cycle cost and maximize asset availability.
Lead or participate in incident investigations and root cause analysis.
Participate in interdisciplinary reliability improvement teams to guide efforts to ensure reliability and maintainability of equipment, processes, utilities, controls, and safety systems.

This position requires: BS degree in Mechanical Engineering with a minimum of 5 years of work experience in the refining / petrochemical industry.

Heat Treated And Brazing Furnace Operator

We are seeking a Heat Treating and Brazing Furnace Operator for our Canoga Park, CA facility to work either the 1st or 2nd shift. This is a Union position.
Set up and operation of Heat treating and controlled atmospheric brazing furnaces to braze rocket engine thrust chambers and other assemblies where vacuum, explosive and/or inert gas atmospheres are used in production.
Essential Job Functions (Including % of Time for Each)
Plan brazing and/or heat treat operations of developmental, prototype and production assemblies in controlled atmospheric brazing furnaces where explosive and inert gasses are used in the atmospheres.
Set power and temperature controls, gas flow panels and instrumentation for electric or gas fired furnaces. Adjust switches on temperature control instruments for multiple cycle brazing. Load assemblies on furnace base and make hookups of thermocouples and pressure lines as required.
Operate auxiliary power equipment to unload furnaces and cool down with cooling muffles. Perform heat treating and/or brazing operation as required.
Operate furnace to heat treat and/or braze assemblies including leak check and purge, instrumentation, heat-up, braze and cool down. Take action when emergency conditions arise during phases of operations to assure safety of personnel and equipment. Over-ride furnace controls by manual operation when necessary.
High school diploma or equivalent and five (5) years of experience in heat treating and brazing operations.
Demonstrated experience working with and around hazardous chemicals including acids.
Must have a proven safety record and experience with PPE used with hazardous chemicals.
Experience handling large (500 lbs +) complex hardware with tooling and other handling devices (ie: pallet jacks, cranes, lifting straps, etc).

The furnace technician will be responsible for performing repairs, preventative maintenance, Temperature Uniformity Surveys (TUS), System Accuracy Tests (SAT) and furnace control instrument calibrations. Troubleshoot and repair furnace instruments and combustion systems to maintain operation of furnaces in a Quality environment in accordance with quality compliance procedures.

Prepare survey racks and stands for the performance of Temperature Uniformity Surveys to include: cutting and welding thermocouple wire to the required length(s) and affixing them to the correct positions on the survey rack / stand(s) in accordance with quality procedures.
Perform Temperature Uniformity Surveys test using a Portable Survey Datalogger Field Test Instrument mobile computer.
Upload the Temperature Uniformity Survey results to the network system for proper review and acceptance by the Quality personnel in order to release the furnace back to production following the performance of Temperature Uniformity Survey or System Accuracy Test.
Calibrate furnace control instruments such as the temperature chart recorders, temperature controllers and the over limit controllers.
Create the certification of calibration for each instrument and affix calibration sticker that shows calibration date and due date in accordance with quality procedures.
Work directly with the Quality Department representatives, supervision and management to immediately identify and correct issues affecting the compliant functioning of furnaces.
Assuring that after the quality personnel reviews and approves the certification of calibration file calibration records with the maintenance planner.
Validate and confirm sufficient furnace components are on hand for the performance of scheduled TUS, SAT and calibrations.
Ensure that all the instruments that can not be calibrated in house get calibrated by an outside source, such as Optical pyrometers, potentiometers and gas analyzers.
Review material certifications to ensure they have been approved for release and use by the Quality Department for thermocouple wire, control thermocouples, potentiometers, optical - pyrometers and Gas analyzers prior to their usage for both Forge and Heat Treat Departments.
Knowledge of Programmable Logic Controllers and electro-mechanical controls a must.
All these duties are performed in accordance with Spec. AMS2750 Pyrometry latest revision.

Position: Furnace Operator
Location: Troy, MI
The Furnace Operator safely prepares, melts, and atomizes metal powder following job instructions. This will include loading the furnace with raw materials, purging down with inert gas, power-up, taking temperatures, inspecting, and pouring the molten metal from a hydraulically positioned induction furnace. Support activities associated with position include preparation and maintenance of the refractory furnace lining, maintenance of accurate production records, delivery of atomized product to the screening area, and cleaning the furnace and atomization system between alloys.

Operation and monitoring of induction melting equipment used for the gas atomization of nickel and cobalt based alloys. This will include loading the furnace, purging the system with inert gas, power-up, and pouring the molten metal from a hydraulically positioned induction furnace. Responsible for preparation and maintenance of refractory furnace lining. It is important that the furnace operator maintain a constant awareness of the condition of the refractory lining.
The furnace operator cleans the furnace and atomization tank between alloys. The operator performs routine maintenance and support activities (e.g. replacement of power leads, disassembly of atomization tank, installation of gas delivery system). The furnace operator is responsible for the cleanliness of his / her work area.
The furnace operator utilizes process parameters specified in the job traveler. Accurate records are maintained of heats poured noting characteristics such as start and stop time, gas pressures, temperatures, and melt characteristics.
The furnace operator is responsible for the identification of in-process atomized material, transfer of atomized product to the screening area, and submission of samples to the QC laboratory per instructions on the job traveler.
Performs other duties as required.

Furnace And Refractory Design Engineer

We are looking for a motivated, talented individual to join our organization as a Furnace and Refractory Design Engineer at our World Headquarters in Perrysburg, Ohio.
Furnace and refractory design and operations engineer for glass melting furnaces for container glass manufacturing facilities in a global environment. Provide technical support for projects including scoping, estimation, design, construction and commissioning. Provide operating and maintenance support for the applicable systems to the facilities.
Responsible for complex and significant projects using considerable engineering expertise in furnace and refractory design and hot repair techniques to complete projects with minimal technical oversight.

Scoping, estimating, design, selection, inspection, and construction supervision of furnace refractories with minimal oversight. Supervision of internal and external engineering staff for the aforementioned areas.
Guide engineers during the production of drawings.
Review drawings and Bills of Materials for accuracy and completeness.
Perform and report on furnace audits and campaign life assessments. Follow-up with necessary hot repair documentation, solutions to issues, and supervision of repairs.
Mentor engineers and designers in design and audit practices and techniques.
Provide feedback to Global Furnace Team and other disciplines for improvement of design, construction practices, material standards, etc.
Provide direction as required to aide in decision making related to the scope, schedule, cost and risk assessment for projects as part of business case development and validation.
Strong communication skills required. Will be expected to present to furnace team, project teams, and plant teams.
SCOPE AND IMPACT
Responsible for scoping, supervision and follow-up of design and repair project development.
Required to support ongoing development and proper use of furnace and refractory standards.
Expected to provide input into decisions with potentially significant financial impacts to the business.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor Degree in Ceramic/Chemical/Mechanical Engineering.
Bachelor's Degree in Ceramic Engineering preferred. Chemical or Mechanical Engineering or equivalent knowledge will be considered.
5+ years of experience in glass furnace and refractory design, construction, audits and hot repairs.
Ability to work within multinational environments
MS Office knowledge
English skills: Oral – Advanced, Written/Reading – Advanced
