Oversee the manufacture of machines and equipment that apply treatments to metals and metal components. These treatments remove defects and can be finished to specific products, for example, artificial aging. The Heat Treat Operator will be working with a variety of metals such as iron and stainless steel.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Loading the untreated product in an oven or a tank
Adjusting temperature controls for a particular treatment
Monitoring of the process, and adjusting times and temperatures according to the instructions
Removing the products from the oven and air drying, or air conditioning in water baths, oil or chemicals
Cleaning of oxides and scale of parts or sprinkler use steam-cleaning or chemical cleaning solutions
Sampling for testing hardness and other properties to ensure they meet manufacturer's specifications
Carrying out minor maintenance work
Testing parts for hardness, using hardness testing equipment, and stamps heat treatment identification mark on part, using hammer and punch
Removing parts from furnace after specified time and air dries or cools parts in water or oil brine or other baths
Reducing heat and allows parts to cool in furnace
Positioning part in fixture, pressing buttons to light burners and tending flame hardening machine, according to procedures, to case-harden metal part
Adjusting speed and operating continuous furnace through which parts are passed by means of reels and conveyors
Setting up and operating die-quenching machine to prevent parts from warping
Activating and tending electric furnace that anneals base sections of hardened parts for subsequent machining
Setting automatic controls, observing gauges, and operating gas or electric furnace used to harden temper, or anneal metal parts
Loading parts into containers, closing furnace door, and inserting parts into furnace when specified temperature is reached
Determining flame temperatures, current frequencies, heating cycles, and induction heating coils needed based on degree of hardness required and properties of stock to be treated
Reducing heat when processing is complete in order to allow parts to cool in furnaces or machinery
Moving controls to light gas burners and to adjust gas and water flow and flame temperature
Repairing, replacing, and maintaining furnace equipment as needed, using hand tools
Placing completed work pieces on tables, using cold rods, tongs, or chain hoists, or examining parts to ensure metal shades and colors conform to specifications, utilizing knowledge of metal heat-treating
Heating billets, bars, plates, rods, and other stock to specified temperatures prior to forging, rolling, or processing, using oil, gas, or electrical furnaces
Setting and adjusting speeds of reels and conveyors for prescribed time cycles in order to pass parts through continuous furnaces

Education and Experience:
High School/GED, prior experience working in a manufacturing environment
Lean manufacturing experience is preferred.

Work Environment and Personal Protective Equipment:

Responsible for learning furnace operating processes in obtaining high quality results of brazing, hardness and mechanical properties of sheet metal aircraft components.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Prepare parts for loading into furnace, including wiping and final cleaning as necessary.
Evaluate load configuration, load on racks or grids for economical batch size and furnace hot zone limits.
Manufacturing load thermocouples.
Ensure proper heat treat cycle is used following manufacturing traveler requirements for heat, vacuum levels, time and cooling rate.
Monitor leak rate and progress of load during cycle.
Maintain furnace systems including preventative maintenance checks on pumps and other items listed in the maintenance log.
Perform weekly leak rate testing.

Responsible for ensuring proper documentation is entered on manufacturing planning (including correct quantities), paperless timecard system and furnace log.

1St Shift AS Ra/Pp Furnace Operator
Summary of Responsibilities:
Perform various cleaning, monitoring and securing operations to assist in the set-up of a rotary atomization and pilot plant furnace.
Work from verbal and written instructions to perform repetitive tasks before and after a pour and when required during the atomization process.
Assist in preparing raw material charges, running the furnace control board, making minor repairs on the furnace, atomization chamber, and other auxiliary equipment, cleaning the atomization chamber, carry out housekeeping duties.
Assist in the removal and replacement of coils and cleaning the interior of the furnace chamber.
Clean raw material charge and transport to charge area. As directed assist in the attachment and detachment of gas, electric, and water lines to furnace. Clean inside of crucibles, patch cracks and performs other repair tasks of crucible prior to next run.
May be required to carry out tasks not specifically listed, within the scope and skill level of this position in support of department objectives and to develop one's skills

Set gas flow and temperature for heat-treating furnaces. Monitor furnace temperature for specific heat treating jobs and make adjustments as needed according to product specifications after consulting with the lead or shift supervisor.
Set up and operate the Supers Line and other furnaces as needed
Position products in baskets; load furnaces and time prescribed heating cycles to bring metal to proper temperatures; document procedures.

Assist supervisor (i.e. evaluate history on prior heats) and set tempering temperature as necessary.
Daily check furnaces for maintenance problems; perform minor maintenance procedures.
Complete all necessary documentation and paperwork.
Follow all clean-up and housekeeping procedures. Comply with all quality, safety, 5S and work rules and regulations.
Qualified Furnace Operator C; Has ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, decimals, and percent; ability to read specifications and gauges; ability to complete standard production documentation; ability to use various hardness measuring devices to include Brinell, and Rockwell; ability to operator a forklift truck; ability to operate charge cars, overhead and jib cranes; ability to work in a very hot environment; and the ability to occasionally lift up to 40 lbs.

The furnace technician will be responsible for performing repairs, preventative maintenance, Temperature Uniformity Surveys (TUS), System Accuracy Tests (SAT) and furnace control instrument calibrations. Troubleshoot and repair furnace instruments and combustion systems to maintain operation of furnaces in a Quality environment in accordance with quality compliance procedures.

Perform Temperature Uniformity Surveys test using a Portable Survey Datalogger Field Test Instrument mobile computer.
Upload the Temperature Uniformity Survey results to the network system for proper review and acceptance by the Quality personnel in order to release the furnace back to production following the performance of Temperature Uniformity Survey or System Accuracy Test.
Calibrate furnace control instruments such as the temperature chart recorders, temperature controllers and the over limit controllers.
Create the certification of calibration for each instrument and affix calibration sticker that shows calibration date and due date in accordance with quality procedures.
Work directly with the Quality Department representatives, supervision and management to immediately identify and correct issues affecting the compliant functioning of furnaces.
Assuring that after the quality personnel reviews and approves the certification of calibration file calibration records with the maintenance planner.
Validate and confirm sufficient furnace components are on hand for the performance of scheduled TUS, SAT and calibrations.
Ensure that all the instruments that can not be calibrated in house get calibrated by an outside source, such as Optical pyrometers, potentiometers and gas analyzers.
Review material certifications to ensure they have been approved for release and use by the Quality Department for thermocouple wire, control thermocouples, potentiometers, optical - pyrometers and Gas analyzers prior to their usage for both Forge and Heat Treat Departments.
Knowledge of Programmable Logic Controllers and electro-mechanical controls a must.
All these duties are performed in accordance with Spec. AMS2750 Pyrometry latest revision.
