Furnace Mechanical Engineer
PURPOSE:
LyondellBasell's Houston Refinery, one of the largest refineries designed to process heavy, high-sulfur crude oil is in search of a Furnace Mechanical Engineer. Our 268,000-barrel-per-day refinery is strategically located on the U.S. Gulf Coast with access to interstate pipelines and the Port of Houston. The facility covers approximately 700 acres at the city limits of Houston and Pasadena, Texas.
The Houston Refinery was one of the first petroleum refineries constructed on the Houston Ship Channel and traces its origin to 1918. This is a high visibility position and will provide ample opportunities for growth. You will work with a team of dedicated, highly-trained professionals.
The Furnace Mechanical Engineer position interacts with other technical groups on site (process engineering, maintenance, turnaround and capital project groups), corporate technical networks and peers, and vendors/suppliers as needed to resolve problems and improve plant reliability and performance.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Serve as site subject matter expert for high level Fired Equipment issues and long-range plans.
Perform routine Infrared (IR) scans, including generating IR reports, of site furnace tubes and any Process hot spots that develop.
Perform API-579 heater tube creep damage assessments to establish remaining life and next inspection date.
Ownership of the Fired Heater database / spreadsheet which documents heater design parameters.
Troubleshoot mechanical issues with furnaces, flares, thermal oxidizers, combustors, burners, stacks, FD / ID fan air pre-heat systems, flue gas analyzers.
Assist Unit Inspectors and the turnaround group with internal inspection of furnaces during outages and turnarounds. Visual Inspection shall focus on radiant and convection tubes, refractory, burners, burner tile, tube guides, skin thermocouples, etc.
Monitor equipment performance and make improvement recommendations.
Perform annual heater boiler MACT testing and heater optimization.
Perform annual heater audits.
Provide annual heater training to Operators and Engineering.
Apply data analysis techniques to develop engineering solutions to repetitive failures and other problems that adversely affect plant operations including capacity, quality, cost, safety, environmental, and regulatory compliance issues.
Provide technical support/expertise within your discipline in the design and installation stages of projects for new assets and modification of existing assets to minimize life cycle cost and maximize asset availability.
Lead or participate in incident investigations and root cause analysis.
Participate in interdisciplinary reliability improvement teams to guide efforts to ensure reliability and maintainability of equipment, processes, utilities, controls, and safety systems.
Provide technical support within your discipline to production, maintenance, project, turnaround and process engineering groups.
QUALIFICATIONS:
This position requires: BS degree in Mechanical Engineering with a minimum of 5 years of work experience in the refining / petrochemical industry.
Experience with troubleshooting issues with furnaces, combustors, thermal oxidizers, marine vapor combustors, air-preheaters, flares, etc.
Proven proficiency with performing API-579 creep damage assessments on heater tubes.
Working knowledge of furnace fabrication and inspections codes / standards (i.e., ASME Sect. VIII, API 560, API 936, API RP 535, API RP 573)
Strong interpersonal leadership skills are critical due to the requirement for effective communication of complex issues across the organization as well as for mentoring and consensus building.
Must obtain and maintain a Transportation Workers Identification Card (TWIC)

Operator, Furnace
Inspects incoming parts and reviews process instructions.
Performs mechanical cleaning of parts such as stainless steel grit blasting and glass beading.
Prepares and mixes brazing filler metal mixtures according to specifications.
Applies braze filler metals to parts.
Operates, programs and controls furnaces (vacuum, atmosphere) for heat treating and brazing of parts. Utilizes thermocouples and dewpoint meters to aid in temperature and gas quality measurements.

1St Shift AS Furnace Operator
Job Description:
Essential Functions:

Assist in the removal and replacement furnace lid and coils. Cleaning the interior of the furnace chamber and "O" ring seal.
Clean raw material charge and transport to charge area. As directed assist in the attachment and detachment of gas, electric, and water lines to furnace lid and tank. Utilizing electric hoist remove and replace furnace lid from furnace chamber. Clean inside of crucibles, patch cracks and performs other repair tasks of crucible prior to next run.
May be required to carry out tasks not specifically listed, within the scope and skill level of this position in support of department objectives and to develop one's skills

Job Description
Furnace Operator: This position is responsible for melting, refining, tapping, chemistry adjustment, and delivery of a quality product to the casting department. Must, also maintain a high standard for safety and housekeeping. This position will report to the Melting cell Routine Facilitator.
Duties & Responsibilities
Takes temperature of molten steel using temperature lance.
Removes obstructions / debris around the furnace with shovels, brooms, and air hoses.
Orders materials as needed.
Assists first helper in adding electrodes.
Communicates with crane operator to position crane over any type load, then connects load to crane.
Assists maintenance staff with repairs during normal operations as well as on down days.
Maintains visual contact with co-workers, crane and equipment at all times.
Responsible for keeping furnace floor clean at all times.
Responsible for keeping break room stocked and clean at all times.
Communicates with co-workers through two-way radio and hand signals.
Assists in training of co-workers as needed.
Maintains and operates mobile equipment including forklift and charging machine.
Obtains sample of molten steel during the heat.
Starts tapping the furnace upon direction of the First Helper.
Fills the tap hole after the ladles are filled.
Any other duties as directed by a shift leader or manager.
