Preventing Youth Gang Joining Through Academic Success
Savannah, Georgia is experiencing a growing and increasingly violent youth gang problem. Our organization is taking a leadership role in bringing together other community organizations and the affected communities themselves, to tackle youth gang joining together.
Some of our partners include other youth development organizations, city of Savannah departments that work with low income communities, and community crime prevention and juvenile officers of the local police department. We will focus on the low income neighborhoods near our two Club sites, and especially on at risk youth aged 8 to 15. Our program solution for increasing youth gang joining is Gang Prevention Through Targeted Outreach (GPTTO), developed by the Boys & Girls Clubs of America.
GPTTO has a 20 year track record of success, and was developed from extensive research on what prevents youth gang joining. GPTTO utilizes its Boys & Girls Clubs programs to redirect the targeted youth into the Club's positive, life affirming activities that are much more likely to result in a healthy, successful future. Our goal by September 2018 is to have recruited 70 new, severely at-risk youth into Club activities and away from potential neighborhood gang activities.
That will also be a 19% increase in our Club's daily engagement of disadvantaged children and youth. We have several slots for AmeriCorps Affiliates - a new service category of AmeriCorps that includes the Segal Education Award and all its benefits, but no stipend during the service period. Affiliates will play a key role in this important project for Savannah, engaging in outreach, event planning, tutoring, monitoring activities, and carrying and tracking a case load of new severely at risk youth while they become engaged in Club activities.
