Pipefitters are responsible for installing these complex systems together on the ship and in the shop: more than 23 miles of pipe are installed on a submarine, and more than 230 miles of pipe are installed on a carrier. As a pipefitter, you will learn to read blueprints, fabricate, install, inspect, and test the many piping systems onboard a ship.
In your first few weeks at the company you will attend a Fundamentals of Piping Fitting class where you will receive important information needed for you to perform you job. Qualified candidates must have at least one (1) of the three (3) qualifying skill sets listed below in order to be considered for this position:
Two (2) or more years experience as a Pipefitter, Plumber, or HVAC Mechanic in the manufacturing or industrial environment.
One (1) year as a Pipefitter, Plumber, or HVAC Mechanic in the manufacturing or industrial environment, and two (2) or more years in a technical/mechanical trade such as: Carpentry, Construction, Steel Fabrication, Diesel/Automotive Mechanics, or a similar trade in an industrial environment, or
One (1) year as a Pipefitter, Plumber, or HVAC Mechanic in the manufacturing or industrial environment, and a certificate or diploma in a technical/mechanical trade such as: Carpentry, Construction, Steel Fabrication, Diesel/Automotive Mechanics

External Job Description
The Fitter Trainee program is a joint partnership between Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries, Workforce Development, and several local Virginia Community Colleges. This program provides a candidate with the unique opportunity to build a career in shipbuilding.
This course is 3 weeks (120 hours) long designed to prepare candidates to enter the Fitter Program at NNS. The course will cover safety, an introduction to basic welding skills, a validation of basic welder competencies required to be a successful Fitter, and an evaluation of employability skills. This program is designed to be 90% hands-on, focusing on a candidate's ability to follow verbal & written instruction, display manual dexterity consistent with tack welding often done as a Fitter, accomplish specific tasks in a reasonable time, and perform all activities in a safe manner.
All candidate are required to complete a NNS job application. Selected candidates will be scheduled to complete work keys testing, and an interview.
Offers of employment will be given to those candidates selected to participate in this program. The offer will include several contingencies including a drug scree, physical, and background check. once the candidate has cleared the drug screen and physical, they will be accepted in to the program.
The Training program will be for 3 weeks from 7am to 3:30pm, Monday - Friday. If selected to participate in this training program, then the candidate will need to complete the college's enrollment process and pay a $250 tuition fee to the community college where the training will take place.
With the completion of the training program, along with meeting all other contingencies previously mentioned, the candidate will be given a start to work date through Newport News Shipbuilding and hired as a Fitter. Once the employee starts to work, they will be reimbursed the $250 (subject to tax withholding) by NNS.
Fitters are often called the "carpenters" of shipbuilding or "Artists of Steel". Fitters read, interpret, plan and execute from drawings and procedures. Fitters measure, cut, grind, fit, align and tack weld parts as small your finger nail to the large sub-assemblies and super lifts that form the structural body of the ship.
Fitters build in-place all interior structures, hatches, doors, bulkheads, etc., to complete all the steel work in the ship.
A fitter will apply their skills in the shops, platens, dry-docks and onboard ships in support of new construction, ship repair and ship overhauls.

Must be able to be respirator qualified. This is a construction environment involving extreme heights, confined spaces, physical labor and various weather conditions within a shipyard environment. Must be able to work any shift.

Orthotic fitters make sure that medical braces, prosthetic limbs, arch supports, and other medical devices properly fit patients by using equipment to help mold and alter the devices to the patients' specifications. They monitor the patients over time and make any necessary changes to the devices to keep them in good condition.
The Orthotic Fitter is specifically trained and qualified to participate in the fitting and delivery of prefabricated orthotic devices and/or soft goods related to a patient's needs, as indicated by an orthotic practitioner or physician.
An Orthotic Fitter is competent to practice orthotics within a scope of practice that is specific to fitting certain prefabricated and off-the-shelf orthoses that do not require more than minor modification.
Depending on the operational requirements, size of the Hanger Clinic and subject to limitations imposed by state and/or local law, your role may include some or all of the functions listed below.
Collaborate with orthotic practitioners in the evaluation and analysis of a patient's need for orthotic services
Examine and evaluate patient's needs in relation to disease and functional loss.
Perform fitting, and execute minor modifications as necessary.
Evaluate orthotic device on patient, adjust to assure fit, function, medical efficacy, and quality of work.
Instruct patient in use of orthopedic device.
Identify and reconcile issues/problems to ensure patient satisfaction with devices provided.
Follow up with patients and physicians.
Provide in-service training to physicians and allied health care professionals.
Provide detailed clinical notes to patient records.
Assist other clinical staff.
Provide information to administrative staff to conduct reimbursement activities.
Adhere to all safety regulations; compliance with Medicare and other governmental regulations; compliance with bloodborne and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requirements.
High school diploma or GED required. Associate degree preferred.
Current certification as a Certified Fitter of Orthotics (i.e., American Board Certified (ABC)) or board eligible for certification, or
Minimum of six months experience in providing customer service in the following settings; sports rehab, fitness, healthcare, and medical office or retail.
Prefer 2 years successful experience providing orthotic services under the supervision of a certified clinician.
