Must be familiar with the machining properties, such as hardness and heat tolerance, of a wide variety of common metals, alloys, plastics, and other materials. Utilize shop mathematics and trigonometry.
May suggest design improvements or material substitutions to proper personnel, solve complicated tooling problems. Plan material availability, assemble and verify final features to ensure the highest levels of quality and cost management. Must be able to perform finishing tasks, such as filing, grinding, and polishing. Investigate problems attributed to faulty tooling, check tools and/or materials to determine root cause and collaborate with cognizant personnel. Must have a general understanding of the mechanics of machinery. Prepare and maintain documentation and reports required to perform the duties described.

Journeyman Tool & Die Maker
The incumbent provides specific diversified components, tooling, and assemblies to meet engineering and testing requirements by planning and performing various complex and technical machine tool functions with limited supervision.
KEY ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The position requires sufficient professional Tool Room experience of all machinery such that skills can be employed to perform complex layouts and machine tool setups for the purpose of producing, adjusting, repairing, heat-treating tools, dies, fixtures, gauges, and machine components of very tight tolerances. The incumbent must have an aptitude to learn Numeric Control (NC/CNC) or similar programming of complex machinery for the purpose of producing machined parts.
The position will primarily be responsible for test group machining support with limited supervision. Responsibilities include the ability to produce make-to-print items, assemble various tooling projects and electro-mechanical assemblies, and perform design/development on the fly without the aid of prints. The Test Group is a service organization; therefore, the incumbent must be able to setup and operate all Tool Room equipment with minimal (if any) assistance, must have a high level of communication to insure critical jobs are done as expected by the customer, and will be required to contribute to process/capital/tooling improvements necessary to maintain a viable Tool Room service.
