The Opportunity: The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) Headquarters' Survey and Mapping Office, located in Tumwater, WA is seeking an experienced engineering professional to fill the vacancy of Geodetic Party Chief – Transportation Engineer 2. The HQ Survey and Mapping Office is a specialty statewide cost recovery center. The office is responsible for the development and maintenance of the geographic framework that provides the up to date statewide datum reference for WSDOT project delivery, establishing geodetic survey control, bathymetric, photogrammetric and Three Dimensional Terrestrial Lidar (3DTL) as built mapping technology and structural monitoring for WSDOT project delivery. This position serves as a technical field expert for geodetic survey, terrestrial LiDAR, classical topographic, photogrammetric and monitoring surveys and directs the efficient function of field crews on extensive statewide survey activities.

This position will perform the following work: * Serves as a party chief for terrestrial LiDAR operations during structural asbuilts, structural monitoring, and roadway mapping, including classical topographic surveys.
Directs the efficient function of field crew on extensive statewide survey activities.
Processes terrestrial LiDAR data including registration, analysis, extraction and engineering map deliverables including InRoads data processing.
Provides leadership for statewide high precision survey data collection, insure quality and completeness of data for survey tasks.
Working knowledge of existing geodetic horizontal and vertical control networks and standards, specifications and procedures for surveying new networks, insure quality and completeness of data for survey tasks.
Research and recover existing geodetic control.
Operates static, fast static, and real-time kinematic GPS equipment (including Washington State Reference Network real-time solutions) in an independent manner using judgment based on experience on a statewide basis.
Operates other equipment such as high precision digital bar code level and calibrated rods used for obtaining elevations published with the National Geodetic Survey.
Responsible for maintaining survey equipment and accessories, scan support vehicle, materials, tools, and other related equipment.
Implements new technology, techniques, specifications, procedures, and internal policies by applying education and experience.
Provides technical guidance for statewide managers and personnel, as well as Survey Office staff, of pertinent aspects of control networks for highway design and mapping.
Trains crewmembers, region staff, consultant staff, and outside entities involved with survey office projects.
Efficiently navigates with written descriptions, maps of all scales, aerial photography, and GPS oriented scrolling maps.
Writes descriptions, leveling, traverse, and other field notes; assists in making job site calculations.
* Working knowledge of geodetic, photogrammetric, classical topographic and terrestrial LiDAR mapping activities.
Ability to schedule professional engineering and surveying tasks, manage the research and recovery of existing geodetic control and collection of terrestrial LiDAR, high precision horizontal and vertical data for new geodetic and mapping networks.
Knowledge in procurement and operation of terrestrial LiDAR, Global Positioning System (GPS) static, fast static, and real-time kinematic equipment, robotic total stations and digital bar code high precision levels.
Ability to walk up to 10 miles per day over uneven terrain and in adverse weather conditions alongside of the highway next to fast moving traffic
Ability to travel statewide approximately 80% of the year
Ability to assist in moving up to 80 lbs.
Ability to operate four-wheel drive vehicles.
Valid driver's license.
An ideal candidate for this position will have: * 2 years as a Transportation Technician 3 or equivalent, one year of which is geodetic survey and one year of global positioning work. * 2 years of static LiDAR field collection, 75% field and 25% office.
- Experienced in cost recovery operation, whereby assigned duties directly contribute to office financial stability.
Note: This position is covered by a union shop provision. Coursework must include differential equations and integral calculus.
OR- B. Combination of Education and Experience:
A minimum of 30 semester (45 quarter) hours of coursework in any area listed in option A plus experience that demonstrates the ability to successfully perform the duties associated with this work. As a rule, every 30 semester (45 quarter) hours of college work is equivalent to one year of experience.
Candidates should show that their combination of education and experience totals 4 years.
OR- C. Experience: Six years of experience in conducting work related to Civil Engineering, Geodesy, Geophysics, Geotechnical analysis, Surveying, or related experience.
Classification as a Professional Engineer or Land Surveyor is highly desirable. Position Description:Apex Engineering Group has an opening for a Survey Crew Chief located in our Detroit Lakes, MN or Bismarck, ND offices. The Survey Crew Chief may be located in either office depending on candidate's preference. The position serves as a Land Survey Technician 3 (office) providing support to the Supervisory Land Surveyor within the Surveying and Mapping Department (TERM). TheSurveying and Mapping Department is responsible for providing land survey and mapping support in the maintenance, operation, and development of facilities. Provide Quality Assurance by inspecting and checking deliverables for accuracy and correctness. Deliverables include field note sheets, computation sheets, CAD base maps, GPS network and OPUS reports, GIS shape files and numerous other electronic data sets.
Maintain files and records in accordance with compliance requirements. Verify all official records are accurately maintained for auditing purposes and in accordance with Information Governance & Lifecycle Management (IGLM) standards and procedures.
Complete associated documentation and archiving, such as control and alignment reports. All files to be placed in correct storage locations when completed for records retention.
Maintain land survey databases and validate data quality of information entered.
Assist with process improvement efforts and associated administrative tasks.
Assist Project Surveyors in the field with control, topographic, boundary and construction surveying needs.
