Hibbing Taconite Company (HTC) is located in the center of Minnesota's Mesabi Iron Range near the cities of Hibbing and Chisholm. Plant capacity is rated at 8.0 million tons of iron ore pellets annually.
The Ore Control Geologist will manage, coordinate and implement functions related to the geology of the mine including diamond drilling, bench design, ore grading, geological mapping and crude ore sampling.
Develop and coordinate annual development and exploration diamond drilling programs, including:
Preparation of maps, specifications, and budgets
On-site supervision of contracted drilling crews
Core logging, core photography, geotechnical analysis, assay sampling in accordance with Cliffs QA/QC protocol
Work with mine planners to develop mine bench designs and related datasets for use in all stages of mine planning.
Develop geological and geophysical maps based on field observations and surveys.
Oversight of bench ore grading including statistical analysis of source data, and the development of ore grading locations.
Provide predicted daily grading schedules for ore blending to Mining Dispatch and Operations that support the mine plan and meet the concentrator's requirements.
Serve as technical representative of the mine in production reconciliation dialogue, responsible for explanation of ore blends on plant metallurgical and production results (geometallurgy).
Participate in short-range mine planning by providing geological information.
Utilize GIS and 3D Mine Planning software packages (e.g. ESRI, Vulcan, acQuire) for input and output of geological data and reporting.
Support business improvement initiatives that reduce mine costs while considering safety, environment, quality and productivity.
Conduct routine safety inspections of pit walls.
Perform miscellaneous duties related to blast monitoring, continuous improvement projects and special geology sampling programs.
The ideal candidate will have the following education, work experience, and abilities:
Education - - B.S. in geology, Earth Science or equivalent.
Experience & Knowledge - - Minimum of 1-3 years progressive experience in mining operations; supervisory experience desirable. Knowledge of the Biwabik Iron Formation preferred.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Give geologic advice and recommendations as part of an interdisciplinary team for geotechnical projects (i.e., dams, levee, embankments, etc) AND; 2) Perform geologic investigations to include subsurface borings and geologic mapping for Dam or Levee Projects AND; 3) Prepare geologic or geotechnical engineering reports. Understands basic seismic interpretation and its importance and integration into reservoir characterization and mapping and has worked in SMT Kingdom
The ideal candidate is wholly aware of operations and the CO2 process and understands engineering basics. Capable of making meaningful contributions in pattern reviews and reservoir management meetings
Displays ease and comfort discussing basic reservoir engineering concepts and is comfortable working in a cross-functional, multi-disciplined team
Possess strong written and verbal communication skills
Experience working carbonate reservoirs is highly desirable
Requires a B.S., preferably a M.S. in Geology
Has a background in production geology with some exploration experience

Interprets and evaluates subsurface geologic data (logs, petrophysical and biostratigraphic data, well/seismic ties) to construct integrated maps, cross sections, and other geologic displays defining subsurface structure, reservoir geometries, net sand and net pay, hydrocarbon pore volume and other essential economically significant interpretations consistent with established company mapping standards.
Uses generated geologic interpretation to document additional exploitation recompletion and workover investment opportunities in areas of known hydrocarbon accumulation, and identify areas of potential hydrocarbon accumulation for infill and exploration drilling investments.
Incorporates seismic interpretation with the geologic data to produce a fully integrated subsurface evaluation.
Obtains, manipulates, and interprets computer databases and mapping software.
Work in an integrated team with a reservoir engineer, operations engineer, and geophysicist to mature rate and reserve addition projects (workovers, recompletions, and new wells) to an executable status.
Perform basic petrophysical evaluation to define reservoir properties – porosity, water saturation, etc.
Ability to characterize risk of the various petroleum system elements.
Ability to provide fundamental data to the drilling department in the form of a geoprognosis for a proposed well including lithology, pore pressure, potential geohazards, etc.
Supervises and performs on-site open hole well-site geologic evaluations.
Coordinates open-hole evaluation tools and service company vendors.
Assesses the potential and economic viability of external generated proposal for the company.
Presents geologic work to obtain external capital resources.
Supervises and directs the work of other departmental staff to accomplish the objectives of the department and company.

Adheres to established work schedule, attendance standards and is punctual to work and meetings.

Seven (7) years minimum experience, ten (10) years preferred in geological oil and gas development and/or exploration, and a proven ability to generate multiple investment opportunities.
Working knowledge of the role and job responsibilities of Reservoir and Operations Engineers, Landmen, and other company professionals in order to accomplish team goals.
Ability to integrate and synthesize geologic interpretations to generate economically justified investment opportunities for the company.
Ability to accurately solve problems.
Ability to be available 24 hours per day (on call for questions, emergencies, etc.).
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, other departments, officials, and the public.
Ability to complete multiple, diverse tasks of differing priorities.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with specific ability to translate complex information into an organized and presentable manner.
Project management, administrative, and organizational skills.
Proficiency in the use and application of the following software:
Required: PETRA or other Geologic database and mapping software. Preferred: Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
