Maintenance Worker II - Chipper Project - Extra-Help
Position Information
Help Sonoma County prevent future fires. Join the Department of Fire and Emergency Services as a Maintenance Worker II - Extra Help.
Starting salary up to $26.95/Hr.
(Salary is negotiable commensurate with experience and requirements.)
The Department of Fire and Emergency Services seeks multiple, qualified seasonal, extra-help Maintenance Worker II's (MW II's) to work on the Chipper Program throughout Sonoma County.
MW II's provide chipper services and help the community create defensible land in case of fires. Ideal candidates for these positions will have previous chipping experience.
Maintenance Worker II's assigned to the Chipper Program positions will:
Receive work-orders and schedule chipping service
Tow a chipper machine to project locations
Collect measurable data (i.e., areas of service, cubic yards of fuel, time invested)
Document and photograph vegetation before and after chipping
Operate a chainsaw in order to trim branches
Provide direction to a small crew of personnel performing chipping of brush and other routine tasks
Complete the assigned work and routine reports
Maintain vehicles and equipment used in chipper program
This employment list may also be used to fill future extra-help openings as they occur during the active status of this list.
EXTRA-HELP EMPLOYMENT
Seasonal extra-help employees augment permanent staff by performing duties that are required at certain times or seasons of the year. Seasonal, extra-help employees are not in the classified civil service and do not have property rights to permanently allocated positions.
In addition, they do not receive most employee benefits such as: long-term disability insurance coverage; accrual of vacation; participation in the county retirement program; or eligibility to take promotional examinations. Seasonal extra-help employees are limited in their employment to a maximum of six months in any twelve month consecutive period. Extra-Help employees who meet the eligibility requirements (generally worked 11 consecutive pay periods with a minimum of 440 hours and are scheduled at least 40 hours per pay period) may qualify for a County contribution toward medical coverage.

Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience: Any combination of education and training which would provide the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and abilities listed.
Normally this would include: Two years of experience in road construction or maintenance work that includes the use of light mechanical equipment, machines and power tools OR one year of experience in public works maintenance with the County of Sonoma would provide such opportunity.
License: Possession of a valid driver's license at the appropriate level including necessary special endorsements, as required by the State of California to perform the essential job functions of the position.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of: basic construction materials; safety practices and tools commonly used in construction and maintenance; and preventive maintenance and safe operations of trucks, light construction equipment, machines and power tools.
Ability to: perform a variety of semiskilled manual maintenance and construction tasks for extended periods and under unfavorable weather conditions; safely operate light motorized machines and power tools; understand and follow oral and written instructions; follow basic safety policies and procedures; accurately complete simple report forms; work effectively with others; read and write English at a level appropriate for successful job performance; perform basic arithmetic calculations; and demonstrate physical strength, endurance and mechanical aptitude; The Maintenance Worker II should also have the ability to provide training and direction to other staff.

Set and adjust machine controls according to product specifications, utilizing knowledge of machine operation
Measure work pieces and lay out work, using precision measuring devices
Select machine tooling to be used, utilizing knowledge of machine and production requirements
Study blueprints, work orders, or machining instructions to determine product specifications, tool requirements, and operational sequences
Activate machine start-up switches to grind or cut work pieces, according to specifications
Inspect or measure finished work pieces to determine conformance to specifications, using measuring instruments such as gauges or micrometers, holding tolerances of +/- .001 to .00002 on Inside Diameter (I.D) & Outside Diameter (O.D), and checking parts to Blue Print requirements
Lift and position work pieces, manually on machine tables, face-plates, or chucks, using clamps
Set up, operate, or tend grinding and related tools that remove excess material or burrs from surfaces, sharpen edges or corners, or buff, or polish metal or plastic work pieces
Observe machine operations to detect any problems; make any necessary adjustments to correct problems

SUMMARY OF FUNCTIONS:
To produce usable, extrusion quality material from scrap products produced during pipe manufacturing
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Segregate the different types of scrap products to be reground.
Clean scrap material to prevent contamination of the ground material with foreign objects and dirt.
Use chain saws or other equipment, as needed, to cut up scrap material.
Determine weight of scrap on weigh scales and maintain a written record of the amount of scrap ground.
Operate the scrap grinding equipment and feed scrap product into the grinders.
Operate fork lifts and other lifting equipment, as needed, to handle scrap.
Maintain the organization and cleanliness of the scrap holding area.
Empties trash from work area as required..
Breaks down empty gaylords as received from Extrusion.
Follows all safety requirements of this position.
Abides by all policies and procedures in the associate handbook.
Performs all duties as directed by management.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
High School diploma or GED from a state recognized institution is desired.
Mechanical aptitude: ability to operate power grinding equipment and power hand tools.

With minimum supervision operates one or more of the following precision grinding machines to grind internal and/or external surfaces of metal objects to specified dimensions and finish: center-less, cylindrical, external, internal, surface, drill, broach, saw, gear, cutter and thread grinders. Requires ability to select and use all types of grinding machines. Abrasive wheels, holding fixtures, gages, micrometers, etc. Four place tolerances may be specified.
