Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
Verifies alignment and tolerances of moving parts, using measuring instruments, such as dial indicators and thickness gauges.
Improvises minimum cost tooling for one-time or rush jobs for machined and/or fabricated parts with special focus.
Reviews and understands blueprints and specifications of die components.
Determines the sequence of steps to follow in production of the product and plan the process including where and how to cut the work piece utilizing the correct tools and materials for the job.
Develops specifications from general description and draws sketch of part or product for fabrication as required.
Operates CNC lathe to turn components, Performs precise cutting of tooling, using various gages and micrometers as required.
Troubleshoots and follows-through with solution to problem.
Complies with all company safety rules and regulations.
Required Skills and Experience:
Five years of technical Tool Design Concept and Tool Cutter/Grinder experience.
Must have understanding of Drill Geometry and be able to produce complex cutting tools using a variety of grinders.
Ability to plan the construction of tooling, working from tool design, part or part print or functional information. Ability to lay out parts in detail from required machining operations.
Must be familiar with the general composition of tooling steels, machinability of metals, effect of heat treat on steel.
Must be capable of working effectively with minimal direction and supervision.
Solid experience in operating a variety of manual and CNC controlled machinery to produce precision parts and components to exact specifications.
Manufacturing of production and prototype rotary cutting tools; plan, and design.

Manufacturing and Machine shop experience.
Mathematical Skill – Demonstrate the ability to work with mathematical concepts such as fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.
Blueprint Reading & Interpretation – Demonstrate the ability to reliably read and interpret the following: drawing terms; call outs; symbols and/or descriptions; types of lines; front view; side view; top view; section view; types of radii; tolerances (min. and max.); external thread; internal thread; surface finish; fastener-related specifications.
Basic Visual & Dimensional Inspection – Demonstrate the ability to inspect parts reliably using the following tools: caliper (dial and digital); micrometer (stand, blade, and disk); dial drop indicator; test indicator; comparator; pin gage; gage block set; any functional gages applicable to the operator.
Workmanship – Demonstrate the ability to identify and take appropriate action to prevent, correct, or reject the following conditions on die and tools parts: cracks; nicks, scratches and dents.
Communication – Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively with team members to achieve cooperation and assistance needed to resolve problems and attain maximum productivity.
Highly organized, self-motivated individual who can work independently as well effectively in a collaborative team environment.

Under the direction of the Tool Room Supervisor, perform precision grinding to construct, alter – or repair a wide variety of cutting tools, gauges, fixtures, fixture parts, sub-assemblies and assemblies.
Cutting tools vary widely to include most types of turning, facing, recessing, forming, radius tools, special multiple diameter end mills, reamers, drills, boring tools, plain and special form milling cutters of various types. Gauges include various types of depth, concentricity, alignment, and other configuration acceptance gauges. Fixture grinding includes various sizes and shapes of details and complete assemblies held to precision size and inter-relationship.
Work requires the use of standard grinding machines with various set-ups and configurations of grinding wheels to produce desired results. Special emphasis places upon size, finish, dimensional relationships and general geometry of part produced.
Knowledge is desirable for proper selection of grinding wheels and cutting characteristics of various metals such as stainless steels, beryllium, copper, aluminum alloys, brass, high speed and various grades of special alloy wheels. Work closely with production or other Tool Room personnel.
Knowledge of various clearance and relief angles is essential. Use of all precision measuring equipment such as optical comparator, micrometers, verniers, Shadowgraph, sine plate and gauge blocks is required.
Must be capable of accurately interpreting drawings or sketches. Tool drawings generally available. Limited work performed to part print of verbal instructions.
To qualify for this opportunity, you must have a High School Diploma plus over three years' experience in a wide variety of precision grinding.

Tool & Die Broach Grinder (Tdm1)
The Tool and Die Broach Grinder (TDM1) sharpens and smoothes cutting edge of tools such as broaches, drills and coordinates the broach usage for all departments to facilitate production or procurement of tooling by performing the following duties.

2nd shift 2:30pm
3rd shift: 10:00pm

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Coordinates the broach usage for all departments, determines the condition of tooling and the need to re-sharpen tooling and keep the supply cabinet up to date and stocked. Make new and/ or re-sharpened broaches, drills and end mills as needed. Train fellow associates in cutter grinding techniques. Work with supervisors on the proper use and care of broach tooling.

Operate precision grinding equipment to sharpen and manufacture cutting tools to high quality finish blueprint specifications.
Perform quality inspection of tooling throughout the manufacturing and sharpening process.

Select work holding fixtures to use in the tool grinding process.
Set up, align, and operate surface, cutter, and CNC grinders, as well as any related equipment to perform medium complexity tooling operations.
Create simple CNC programs with the use of basic CNC codes.
Make medium complexity tooling from a tool blank as required.
Perform troubleshooting and maintenance on grinding equipment and clean machines daily.
Verify completeness of PMPs performed on grinding equipment per the maintenance schedule.
Maintain work chucks and fixtures in a burr free condition.
Clean and re-supply operating materials. (i.e. oil, hoses, belts, changing coolant, and filters as needed).
Train, check and direct occasionally the work of 1 person while performing normal duties.

Tool And Cutter Grinder #1
The Tool & Cutter Grinder #1 will set up and operate grinding machines such as CNC, Surface and Universal, carbide, drill, and tool and cutter grinders. Sharpen cutting tools to specifications using blueprints, process sheets, and knowledge of abrasive and metal properties.
Routinely work to gage-makers tolerances of +/- .0002. Follow established company directives, policies, military specifications, quality documents and manufacturing instructions.
Review blueprints and process specifications and plan grinding sequence. Select appropriate grinding wheel of appropriate shape and grade.
Position and secure cutting tool on machine table. Move controls to set cutting tool rotation speed, feed rate, and grinding wheel rotation speed. May set up adjustable index plate and rotate cutter by hand to individually sharpen each tooth on cutter.
Set up and perform grinding operations, on form both relieved and profile ground cutters. Ensure that specified clearance and rake angles are maintained according to cutter diameters and types of material being machined.
Perform grinding operations using a variety of machine attachments and accessories. Use oxygen and acetylene torch to remove and replace carbide inserts on cutting tools by brazing, silver soldering, etc. Specialized grinding equipment and attachments are used on some machines.
Verify conformance of finished cutters to specification using precision measuring equipment. Consult with machine operators and rig-up personnel on cutter application and gaging tolerances resulting from cutter grinding services.
Apply knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, layout, inspection and machining procedures. Convert from decimals to metrics and vice versa.
Check wheel for cracks and proper RPM. Exercise caution to prevent personal injury to self due to high RPM of grinding wheels and hazards associated with grinding.
Perform operator tasks according to the machine's process maintenance checklist to ensure that the machine is in proper working order, and to record information as instructed. Practice safety and good housekeeping policies and procedures. Must be capable of lifting up to 35 pounds on a regular basis.

Grinder Operator - 3Rd Shift
Set up and operate department equipment such as OD and ID grinders; CNC and/or manually operated. Operate grinders to perform a series of machining operations such turning, boring, threading, facing, grinding, drilling and tapping on production materials.
Work from complex blueprints, engineering drawings, and specifications, job orders, tooling instructions and standard charts to obtain such specifications as dimensions, tolerances, and tooling instructions. Make required adjustments to machinery to compensate for material tooling, machine or program conditions. Troubleshoot and resolve various types of operating difficulties, recommend corrective action on process failures within the department. Determine correct grinding wheel to use to achieve required finish; be able to measure finish using micrometers and other associated tools; be able to hold tight tolerances; be able to maintain proper and accurate records, including inspection reports.

The grinder operator must learn the following skills.
Learn to operate overhead crane and the use of the proper cables according to the load requirements
The proper set up of the machine for the roll that is going to be ground, blocks and stands.
Check the serial number of the roll and match it with the factory order prior to loading the roll in the grinder
Install proper drive to turn the roll body in the grinder
Have bearings installed or operator install the bearings on the roll that will be ground if necessary. Proper installation of bearings.
Stage rolls behind the grinder ( stage next roll to be ground)
Cleaning and maintaining the grinder
Report to supervision any issues or problems during the shift with the roll or the grinder
Work the schedule shift assigned
Work overtime as requested
Inventory of grinding belts required
Learn precision measuring equipment
The actual job duties are listed below after proper training:
Locate the roll that is next in the schedule and match the serial number of the roll to the factory order.
Install bearings if required for grinding if not already on the roll.
Set up the grinder with the proper strands or blocks for the roll to rest on during the grind
Check the cables for the correct weight of the roll install the cables on the crane and lift the roll and place in the grinder.
Install proper drive to turn the roll during the grind process
Check the diameter of the roll on the drive end, center and tailstock end of the roll.
Install the proper information in the CNC controls of the grinder to perform the grind.
Adjust the information to be set for the desired crown and tapers.
Install 36 grit belt and proceed to grind the roll to .125 above customer desired finish.
Inspect the cover throughout the grinding process for any contamination or issues
Stop the roll check the hardness to confirm the desired hardness that is stated on the factory order is within tolerance.
Check the alignment of the roll and make sure the crown profile is correct. Make any adjustments to the end to end alignment or crown as needed.
Change to the next finer grinding belt and grind the roll to remove the 36 grit scratches
After he removal of the 36 grit scratches stop the roll, check the crown profile and end to end alignment.
Proceed to the next finer grit belt and continue to grind the roll to the specified finish stated on the factory order.
After the grinding of the roll is completed, check crown and alignment with digital calipers and print the profile for attachment to the factory order.
Take all hardness readings required on all four sides of the roll cover.
Install the tapers or end relief as stated on the factory order.
Have supervision or lead person check the roll against the factory and sign off as approved.
Wrap roll with shrink wrap and remove from the grinder
Place the roll as close as you can to the next department that will work with this unit.
Clean the machine and blocks and proceed to the next roll scheduled.
For a regrind of a roll the same steps would be followed with the addition of the incoming crown profile and hardness readings would be obtained and recorded prior to the grinding of the roll.
