Tool And Cutter Grinder #2
Sets up and operates grinding machines such as Surface and universal, carbide, drill, and tool and cutter grinders. Sharpens cutting tools to specifications using blueprints, process sheets, and knowledge of abrasive and metal properties. Follows established company policies, procedures, directives, military specifications, and grinding disciplines.
Reviews blueprints and process specifications and plans grinding sequence. Selects grinding wheel of appropriate shape and grads.
Checks wheel for crack and attaches to spindle using wrenches. Positions and secures cutting tool on machine table, using magnetic chuck, vice, or holding fixture, or mounts cutter on arbor and clamps between centers. Turns hand wheels to position table or spindle to obtain specified taper, angle, bevel, size, etc. on edges of cutting tools.
Moves controls to set cutting tool rotation speed, feed rate, and grinding wheel rotation speed. May set up adjustable tooth rests and rotate cutter by hand to individually sharpen each tooth on cutter. Re-sharpens and maintains all deep hole drills.
Starts machine and turns wheel or engages feed to move workpiece to grinding wheel or vice-versa. Exercises caution to prevent personal injury to self due to high RPM of grinding wheels and hazards associated with grinding. Insures the use of flood coolant, if required, or prevents heat build-up or burning of cutter teeth if sharpened or form ground dry.
Must be knowledgeable of cutter nomenclature, styles of cutters, and cutters. Sets up and performs grinding operations on form relieved cutters such as double angle, straight tooth, staggered tooth, plain and side mills, helical tooth, interlocking, serrated, face, etc.
Ensures that specified clearance and rake angles are maintained according to cutter diameters and types of material being machined. Re-sharpens flat broaches by face grinding including backing off top, angle and radii, and installing chip breakers. Sharpens outside diameters and faces of end mills.
Re-sharpens spline broachers by face grinding and checks stepping dimensions. Re-sharpens taps, reamers, flat and circular form tools, hollow mills, single point cut-off tools, drills, thread chasers, etc.
Performs cylindrical grinding operations on individual and gang milling cutters. Grinds and trues angles on various machine attachments such as lathe and grinder centers.
Must know cutting tool geometry and functions of the various angles such as radial and axial rake, chamfer and clearance angles, radii, etc.
Uses a variety of machine attachments and accessories to perform grinding operations such as wheel dressing, truing, chamfers, angles, etc. Uses oxygen and acetylene torch to remove and replace carbide inserts on cutting tools by brazing, silver soldering, etc.
Uses specialized grinding equipment and attachments on some machines such as Hob grinders, Cincinnati Monosets, digital readouts, spline and broach grinders, end mill, and drill grinding, optical geometry analyzer, etc.
Verifies conformance of finished cutters to specifications using precision measuring equipment such as gage blocks, surface plates, sine plates, Cadillac gages, optical comparators, toolmaker scopes, etc. Consults with machine operators and rig-up personnel on cutter applications and gauging tolerances resulting from cutter grinding services. Must be knowledgeable of the metric system and capable of converting from decimals to metric system and vice-versa.

The Centerless Grinder Operator individual performs the set up and operates precision grinding equipment to grind lot parts in accordance with established shop practices. Performs work operations under supervision.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
