Responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:
Assists with department projects including repair and maintenance of roadways, patching potholes, building and repairing curbs and sidewalks, excavating and backfilling trenches, repairing road signs, mowing grass, removing trees, and clearing and trimming of brush along roads/highways and in the public right-of-way.
Prepares ground for installation of water drainage pipes.
Digs graves and maintains the cemetery grounds; plans and measures new grave lots; builds foundations for monuments; plants shrubs and flowers; spreads fertilizer, lime and grass seed.
Performs park maintenance, including grooming sports fields and removing trash.
Operates vehicles and equipment providing roadway snow removal, sanding and scraping ice, and sweeping of streets.
Assists in emergency highway repairs and in other public works-related emergency repairs; removes trash and animal carcasses from roadways and the public right-of-way.
May be assigned to any division/section of Public Works; seasonally assigned to different divisions/sections.
Performs similar or related work as required or as situation dictates.
Qualifications and experience: High School graduate or equivalent; 3 years of experience in Public Works construction and maintenance activities, or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Working knowledge of Public Works heavy motor equipment operation and mechanics; working knowledge of the materials and techniques required for roadway construction, maintenance and repair projects. Massachusetts Class B/Commercial Drivers License required; Massachusetts Hoisting Engineers license required; 2A preferred, 2B and 4G required. Frequent heavy physical effort required in performing work under field conditions with unavoidable exposure to bad weather and a variety of hazardous conditions.
Salary and Benefits: 40-hour-per-week, union, benefit position; Starting salary $1,874.45 biweekly.

A Heavy Equipment Operator II operates vehicles such as large bulldozers and backhoes, cranes, graders, feller bunchers, prentice loaders, transit mix trucks or other vehicles of similar weight and complexity. Work of this class involves no supervisory responsibilities.
Incumbents receive moderate supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class work a conventional workweek which may require some evening, weekend, holidays or callback duty.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Carry out and complete assigned WebQa/311 work orders, picking up branches, bulky items and/or reports from within the department in the allotted time period.
Maintain constant vigilance of surrounding conditions such as citizens, equipment, property, overhead power lines/wires, etc. in order to assure that operations are conducted in a safe manner.
Manipulate and/or operate a truck mounted knuckle boom grapple loader and other equipment specific to associated division within the department to collect brush and /or bulky materials for disposal at the city landfill. Operate a front and rear loader to cover other routes when needed.
Conduct basic maintenance on equipment including but not limited to lubricating grease points, tightening loose hydraulic hoses, washing, brushing, and cleaning the truck's interior cabin to ensure a clean and professional image.
Respond appropriately to all emergencies and required to be on standby (on call waiting to be engaged to work) when necessary or as requested by management.
Trains/and or assist in the training of employees by relying on previous experience and capability to use the tools and equipment to achieve the objectives of the position, as requested by management.
Assists other personnel in the department whenever necessary in performing unskilled or semiskilled labor such as directing traffic, trimming trees and all other related duties as needed and/or requested by management.
Must follow all rules of telephone and/or hand held radio courtesy in all communications.
Will be required to drive a City vehicle for City business use.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
At least five (5) years of experience as a heavy equipment operator (examples of heavy equipment are: backhoe, bulldozer, roll-off, grapple truck, front loader, rear loader, scraper, grader, automated refuse truck or trash compactor, etc.) or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

The Heavy Equipment Operator will operate heavy equipment such as: 10 to 25 ton dump trucks (25 ton off road dumps at some locations) dozers, motor graders, front-in loaders, vibratory compactors, scrapers, forestry mowers (FECON), track hoes, agricultural tractors, and back hoes for the purpose of completing Forestry projects.
