Scope and General Purpose: To manage grounds/landscape operations for all interior/exterior areas (to include indoor plants and outdoor plants, turf areas, flowers and trees); Maintain the cleanliness of parking areas, driveways, and hard-scape areas.
• Organize, direct, plan and control all landscape activities.
• Recognize and control landscape disease.
• Apply the proper fertilization methods to insure lush foliage.
• Effectively maintain all landscape equipment.
• Think clearly under emergency situations.
• Recruit, supervise and retain grounds staff.
• Motivate and lead staff members to achieve a common goal.
• Maintain resort standards, policies and procedures with staff.
• Read and understand landscape and site plan blueprints.
• Promote positive work relationships with staff and other departments.
• Identify areas for development and training and ensuring that training is affected to agreed standards.
• Provide technical, operation and safety training for employees to ensure that staff is working within OSHA, resort, state and federal guidelines for safe working conditions.
• Ensure that all grounds staff are appropriately dressed and groomed.
• Ensure that all grounds/landscaping facilities are clean and tidy at all times.
• Ensure that expenses are kept within budgeted limits.
• To attend Department Head Meetings and Leadership Meetings as required.
• To submit accurate reports, invoices and purchasing records in a timely manner.
• Other duties as assigned.
• Current valid driver’s license.
• High school diploma or GED is required. A Horticulture degree or diploma of 2 or more years is a plus.
• Must be able to use motorized outdoor maintenance equipment (chain saw, weed eaters, skid steer, golf cars, etc.)
• Must be able to work a flexible schedule including weekends and holidays.
• Knowledge of all technical aspects of landscaping (i.e. planting, irrigation, fertilization disease control, etc.).
• Ability to communicate in English with hotel guests, visitors, and staff to their understanding.
• Ability to provide legible communication.
• Licensed pesticide applicator.
• A motor vehicle and criminal records check are required for this position.
Essential duties require long periods of standing, bending and kneeling, as well as lifting and carrying motorized equipment, fertilizer and plant pallets of 50 lbs or more. The employee must have normal vision (corrected) including close and color vision, hearing and verbal communication.
Duties are performed primarily outdoors in the elements, including the hot summer and cold winter months.

Nursery Production Manager / Plant Propagator / Horticulturist
Chalet Farms is a 183-acre multi-purpose property in Bristol, Wisconsin. One hundred acres are dedicated to the production of high quality plant material – both field and container. We have an opportunity for a Nursery Production Manager to join our team. Responsibilities include:
· Personnel Management & Labor Prioritization – Train and manage a staff of 6 to 10 that consists of both seasonal and year round employees. Develop labor budget that addresses the production plan, maintains existing inventory and anticipated harvest quantities. Partner with both the foreman and senior management to establish weekly work lists.
· Inventory Management – Produce a weekly saleable inventory during the growing season based on physical review of all container and field crops. Manage the container potting and field planting lists.
· Weed Control Management and IPM Solutions – Evaluate and recommend both short term and long term solutions to manage pest issues. Apply and oversee application, storage, and record keeping of all chemicals on the Farm. Stay abreast of new trends, methods, and products.
· Pruning Management – Oversee all pruning practices to maximize desired growth. Develop a pruning calendar and train and manage the staff to meet target goals.
· Farm Promotion – Serve as product expert in all external and internal sales efforts to promote the Farm. Serve as a liaison between the Farm and both Chalet’s Retail and Landscape Divisions. Actively participate in all Farm tours and visits.
· Propagation – Develop and execute a cost-effective propagation plan, incorporating production plans and facility limitations. Research and recommend best-practices in the industry.
The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:
· Three to five years of experience at a broad category production nursery or equivalent with demonstrated abilities to lead and supervise crews.
· A degree in horticulture (AA or BS) is preferred, with knowledge of IPM and propagation practices.
· Secure and maintain a Wisconsin Pesticide Applicators License within 90 days of employment.
· Bi-lingual in Spanish is preferred. Conversational Spanish is a must.
· Be able to repetitively lift 50 pounds, walk the fields, carry back pack spreaders/sprayers, and have experience driving and operating tractors.
· A visionary and enthusiastic self-starter with strong organizational skills.
· Love the outdoors and be weather tolerant as this is a hands-on position throughout all seasons.
This is a full-time year-round position. Due to the seasonal nature of our business, this position will work extended hours in the peak growing season and reduced hours in the winter. Citrus Rootstock Horticulturist And Breeder
Position Information Under supervision, provide oversight of the rootstock experiments at LREC, UCR, CVARS and privately owned experimental sites that are part of our Citrus Research Board funded project entitled: Integrated Citrus Breeding and Evaluation for California. Assist other researchers in planning and conducting experiments. Perform hybridizations of Citrus, Poncirus and related species, propagate trees both by seed germination and grafting/budding techniques and maintain trees in the greenhouse. Collect and analyze plant tissue samples and data on plant performance. Communicate with growers and other researchers. Driver's license is required to travel out in the field to do research.
Minimum Requirements Education and experience:
Bachelor's degree in horticultural science, agronomy or plant science, or plant pathology with horticultural experience. Must have a basic understanding of plant breeding, genetics and statistics.

Basic Education Requirements:
Degree: horticulture; or a related discipline of basic plant science that included at least 30 semester hours in the basic plant sciences, of which at least 16 semester hours were in horticultural subjects such as those dealing with the breeding, care, management, production, and post harvest handling of horticultural crops.
Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in horticulture or a related discipline of basic plant science that included course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Evaluation of Education: Courses in botany, plant physiology, plant taxonomy, plant pathology, genetics, agronomy, horticulture, and similar courses may be used to meet the 30-semester-hour requirement in basic plant sciences. The 16-semester-hour requirement in horticulture includes course work in basic horticulture and course work related to any of the recognized subject-matter fields of horticulture, i.e., fruits, vegetables, ornamentals, nursery work, seed production, or course work in related areas of science, such as micro-biology, entomology, plant pathology, plant physiology, or genetics that is directly related to horticultural work.
You qualify for this position if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system.
For this position Specialized experience is defined as experience in the field of horticulture, in plant identification and horticultural care of orchid species, in a greenhouse, conservatory or interior setting. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week. Perform duties pertaining to the overall aesthetic maintenance of the property’s grounds, landscaping, gardens, trees and aquatic life. Maintain and troubleshoot irrigation systems.
Design, plan, and coordinate plant material installation including annuals, perennials, ground covers, shrubs, trees, turf grass and tropical plants. Inspect the gardens for damage by pests, physical damage and environmental conditions. Report problems to the appropriate supervisor.
Assist with the research and selection of new plant materials. Install and maintain aquatic systems. Perform daily grounds maintenance including trash removal, removal of dead plants and area cleaning.
Perform foliage bulb color replacements. Maintain and monitor irrigation systems and discuss changes in frequency or duration with the supervisor. Perform special projects as required.
Operate turf and landscape power equipment safely on a daily basis. May be required to install, maintain, and remove holiday lights or event decorations.
