Immunohematologist Job Description Sample
Directs the technical operations of the Laboratories which include Laboratory Administration, Quality Control Lab, Immunohematology Reference Lab, Component Production Lab, Development and Research Services, and Biomedical Engineering.
Ensures that Laboratories adhere to the San Diego Blood Bank safety policies and quality plan, and applicable regulatory requirements.
Provides expertise and guidance for the Laboratories to meet the needs of SDBB customers, in accordance with accepted standards and regulations.
Coordinates projects and activities in the Laboratories in conjunction with the VP, Labs.
Participates in on call coverage for lab as needed, using alternate work scheduling.
Participates on the Lab Management Team and supports SDBB safety, cGMP and Quality Plan.
Adheres to current good manufacturing practices (cGMP) guidelines.
Adheres to CLIA, AABB, FDA, and other applicable requirements for testing.
Ensures that lab goals and objectives are met in conjunction with the VP, Labs.
Develops and recommends departmental policies, procedures, and programs to ensure departmental adherence to a Quality Program.
Manages personnel in coordination with Lab Managers. Establishes performance goals, allocates resources and assesses policies for department Managers.
Responds to requests and helps provide updates to Hospital Transfusion Services working with the San Diego Blood Bank.
Directs the preparation and maintenance of departmental reports. Prepares periodic reports for Executive Management as requested.
Develops and recommends department operation budgets and ensures that the SDBB Laboratory departments operate within their budgets.
Represents the needs and interests of the Lab in organizational strategic and quality planning.
Enhances growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in service meetings, or workshops.
Represents the organization at conferences and working committees as requested by the VP, Labs and Chief Medical Officer.
Develops relationships with hospitals, community agencies, groups and professional agencies.
Projects expenses for future growth within the departments. Review new avenues of potential markets for the laboratory services.
Develops and determines priorities and monitors status of special projects on an ongoing basis.
Recommends and develops new services and programs. Review laboratory processes with the intent of improving efficiency or increasing cost containment.
Maintains expertise in current technology as well as advancements in Blood Banking technology in order to project the needs of the San Diego Blood Bank.
Works closely with other Senior Management staff in development, implementation and monitoring of organizational goals and plans.
Participates in internal/external assessments.
Participates in laboratory process improvement, quality, and variance programs.
Participates in hiring, performance appraisals and corrective action for lab positions.
Support and comply with SDBB affirmative action policy.
Perform other related duties as assigned or requested.
Normal laboratory environment with biohazard precautions.
May be exposed to the risk of blood borne diseases.
May be exposed to chemicals that may be hazardous.
May be called on to work or attend meetings at other than routinely scheduled hours.
Works primarily in office/business environment.
Must be able to perform physical laboratory procedures when necessary.
Must be able to work on a computer 4 - 8 hours a day.
Must be able to move around office and attend meetings outside of office.
Ability to travel to other SDBB sites as needed.
Standard office equipment including personal computer, faxes and printers.
Label printing equipment.
General laboratory equipment including but not limited to: cell washers, centrifuges, heat sealers, sterile docking devices, refrigerators/freezers, tubing strippers, weights, scales, balances, expressors if applicable in the lab department.
BECS (Blood Establishment Computer Systems)
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Performance:
Advanced level of understanding of the technical aspects of the lab department, blood banking concepts, component manufacturing, and cGMP regulations.
Advanced knowledge of patient testing, blood donor testing, labeling of components, processing and quarantine procedure.
Advanced knowledge of Federal, State, and local government regulations for tests as well as licensing criteria of regulatory agencies.
Knowledge and application of standards and regulations that apply to blood banking (FDA, AABB, OSHA, SDS, and others as needed).
Must be able to perform high complexity testing.
Must be keenly detail-oriented, well-organized, self-motivated, flexible and capable of independent work with changing priorities, and display good time management skills.
Must be able to direct workflow and perform advanced troubleshooting of scientifically technical problems.
Interpersonal skills to establish and maintain professional relationships.
Professional communication both written and oral, which is clear and precise.

Education Bachelor of Science Medical Technology or Medical Laboratory Science required Master of Science preferred
Experience BS with minimum 5 years of lab experience, 3 years of supervisory experience,
minimum of 5 years of Blood Bank lab, cGMP and regulated work environment experience required
Certifications/Licenses MLS(ASCP)cm / MT(ASCP) or equivalent experience
California Clinical Laboratory Scientist License (CLS) or
California Clinical Immunohematologist Scientist License (CIS)
Specialist in Blood Banking (SBB) or equivalent, preferred
