Performs set-ups on complex automated injection molding machines and assembly robots, identifies potential bottlenecks in the flow process and takes action to prevent reoccurrence. Responsible for utilizing resources, both their own and others, to meet production goals.
Performs quality checks for manufactured parts, identifies defective materials and alerts Production Unit Lead of unusual trends for corrective action. Works with and assists Production Unit Lead, Engineers and Production Management in resolving quality, production process issues, and raw material issues.
Performs minor trouble shooting to assist in identifying equipment problems as they occur and initiates appropriate support function interventions.
Responsible for knowing and following all safety and compliance requirements by maintaining cleanliness within work area, ensuring proper hygiene in work areas at all times and maintaining good documentation practices on all required paperwork.
Works directly with other team members in new and existing process validation, documentation, and implementation. Assists engineers in prototyping, specialty builds, testing, validating, and implementing new materials, designs and process improvements. Records data when necessary. May assist in the design of fixtures.
Responsible for proper handling of waste and accurately documenting supportive data relative to waste.
Conducts preventive maintenance in area of responsibility including but not limited to cleaning and inspection on all components of equipment in a safe manner.
Accountable for learning and applying computer skills, including PC skills in the Windows environment and training new employees as required
Maintains confidential information and performs other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
Advanced understanding of manufacturing operating procedures in the field of injection molding and part assembly.
Requires basic knowledge and understanding of mold design and construction.
Requires extensive and practical knowledge of different materials and their workability, especially in the field of thermoplastics.

Our Manhattan, Montana facility is seeking a Machine Set Up Tech 3 to add to our team. The Machine Set Up Tech 3 is responsible for but not limited to: Technician must possess excellent knowledge of injection molding process, materials, molds and machinery. Technician must maintain molding schedules; evaluate parts based on quality standards and specifications, and assist machine operators as needed. Technician will assist material handler with start and setup procedures. This position supports 32 IMM's with a drive for 90% uptime along with 2 other machine set up technicians of varying experience. This position is a direct supporter/contributor to the success of the Operations Manager and any/all delegated work is expected to positively promote the Blackhawk brand.
Including but not limited to the following
Verify correct set-up of molds, presses, and auxiliary equipment before machine start up.
Establish proper molding conditions.
Perform mold changes and sampling runs according to molding schedule.
Assist with the set-up and maintenance of auxiliary equipment, including granulators, conveyors, liquid temperature controls, and mold electrical controls.
Make minor repairs to machines and equipment and notify proper personnel of necessary major repairs.
Relieve other molding technicians on breaks and in the event of absenteeism.
Train and assist machine operators
Responsible for adherence to Quality Specifications for all products.
Follow and promote all safety and environmental procedures
Promote and maintain an atmosphere of cooperation among and between shifts, tool room, quality control, and management to facilitate production goals.

The Role: Sensus, a Xylem brand, seeks to hire a Plastics Injection Molding Setup Technician. The Plastics Injection Molding Setup Technician will set plastic injection molds of all sizes and complexities in a variety of plastic injection molding machines to be able to efficiently produce quality parts. The setup person will be responsible for maintaining the process during the production run and assisting molding machine operators as needed. This is a 3rd shift position working 11:00 PM till 7:00 AM.
Removes mold and auxiliary equipment from press and returns equipment to proper location. Sets next mold, locates and fastens on press, adjusts by shimming, sets ejection, sets pins, sets and adjusts to prescribed pressures, stroke, and temperatures, changing piping as required. Sample parts visually as well as dimensionally using micrometers, depth gauges, Federal dial indicators, etc.
Set and adjust machine controls according to specifications or from instructions of supervisor. Use all available setup records as a guide to machine setup in relation to machine cycles, temperature settings, etc.
Setup and prepare auxiliary equipment such as temperature controllers, conveyors, resin dryers, finishing tools, drill press, tapping head, etc
Report to supervisor any setups that cannot be run in accordance with prescribed methods.
Have machine in operation and producing acceptable parts, checked by inspection, before releasing for production operation.
Instruct operator on proper operation of machine such as loading and unloading machine, etc.
Acknowledge and correct molding difficulties. Report to supervisor of all problems and all difficulties with molding process
Maintain accurate records on job starting and stopping times, production counts, and machine downtime.

Support the company's On Demand Manufacturing business by calculating accurate quotes for prototype and low volume injection molded parts and tooling, using your knowledge of design for manufacturing (DFM), mold tooling design and construction, injection molding and processes, injection molding resin costs and characteristics and labor rates.

Develop a customized manufacturing engineering "processing cost worksheet" to calculate processing costs, cycle times, scrap, and other manufacturing parameters to establish processing cost and price, using established machine and labor rate
Design and implement an semi-automated process to schedule and perform Quote Reviews after all quotations are proofed for accuracy, consistency, and conciseness; and prior to issuance to the customer

As required use go/no-go gaging, dial calipers, gage pins, and microscopes to inspect the molded housings according to the quality inspection plans.
Dump production bins onto workstation table and visually check parts for nonfill, cracks, broken steel, or other non-conformities and complete associated paperwork. Refer all problems, including press alarms to group leader or set-up person for adjustment.
Record production data, scrap data, inspections completed, and general comments throughout the production run via the production logs, mold report cards, and QIP inspection form at multiple presses.
Place the proper amount of housings in each shipping container by operating the weigh scales as required. Package per Pali requirements.
Assemble cardboard shipping containers for multiple presses and packaging staging area, and apply completed trace labels or other applicable information to the outside of these containers.
Manually strip parts from runner system in tab gated applications as required.
Continuously clean workstation area of parts, pellets, and runners that fall on the floor or get caught on machine per 5S+1 and TEOA requirements. This includes a 5S+1 cleanup at the press each shift, 5S+1 cleanup at the scales and west wall weekly, and clean around the press at the end of each factory order.
Adhere to all standard safety requirements and wear recommended personal protective equipment at all times in the production areas.
Perform TPM walkaround (autonomous maintenance) at multiple presses.
Monitor additional presses for the set-up adjusters as required when they are setting up and processing.
Sort production as required.
Attend daily GO meetings and communicate with incoming and outgoing shifts.
Train associates who are new to the department including temporary employees.
Conduct "second visual" on MSU.
Complete raw material moisture checks as required.
Complete time card at each shift for vacation and/or personal time. Input regular work hours into the computer.
Refill water jugs at the weigh stations.
Close out factory order paperwork with setup adjuster verifying the last shot.
Return the gages to the quality lab at the end of the factory order.
Print the Instruction sheets.
Responsibilities & Qualifications
Education / Experience:
Must be able to use a microscope to inspect parts
Must be able to read a standard blueprint
High Energy, self-motivated, attention to detail and willingness to learn and advance in this past paced department.
Introductory experience in a manufacturing environment is preferred.
Injection Molding experience is a definite plus.
Must be able to lift a maximum weight of 30 lbs.
Must be able to push a maximum weight of 45 lbs.
Must be able to pull a maximum weight of 55 lbs.
Occasional reaching above shoulder
Frequently extending hands and arms between knees and shoulder level; will handle & grasp frequently with hands
Frequent standing, walking and balancing throughout the day is required in this job.
