Some positions in this class require specific knowledge and abilities to perform the responsibilities of a Canine Handler. To be eligible for a Canine Handler designated position, the applicant must have obtained a certificate of completion from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) for their 10 week Basic Canine Handler Training, Cargo/Postal prior to appointment.
Where required, this special skill may be used to ensure that the canine receives proper nutrition, grooming, training, medical care, maintenance exercise, affection and acceptable and sanitary living conditions. The Civil Service Commission approved the use of selective certification for this special skill on May 21, 2010.

Agricultural Assistant - Commodity Field Inspectors
II. ESSENTIAL AND NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
A. Essential Functions:
Under the supervision of a designated lead person or supervisor, as well as operating within established guidelines and procedures, the incumbent provides program support by performing a variety of works in a variety of field settings. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
1.Survey Activities – 80%
Follow established protocols for survey and collection of plant samples for inspection.
Safely operate a motor vehicle to travel to designated work areas.
Walk through commodity fields of approximately 10 miles per day.
Walk commodity fields inspecting plants;
Collect plant samples for inspection;
Visually inspect local plant hosts for target pest damage;
Remove suspect plant samples from foliage and check for target pests.
Follow maps when performing duties.
2.Data Entry – 15%
Entry of data into computer of samples collected.
3.Vehicle and Tool Maintenance – 5%
Assist with the transport of vehicles to service or storage facilities.
Perform daily vehicle safety and fluid level checks.
Clean vehicle interior and truck bed of debris.
Clean, repair and store all equipment daily.
Notify team lead or supervisor when equipment is in need of repair or replacement.
III. WORK ENVIRONMENT
Duties for the job are primarily performed outside of buildings. Weather, temperature, lighting and noise levels may constantly vary. Terrain may vary from smooth and stable to irregular and unstable. The incumbent may be regularly exposed to dust, pollen, and moisture. Driving a vehicle, as well as entering and exiting the vehicle throughout the workday, is generally required.
IV. INDIVIDUAL REQUIREMENTS
The incumbent in this position must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships; work well under pressure; and, work cooperatively with other staff members in completing assigned work and meeting required deadlines. A valid driver license and acceptable driving record must be maintained at all times during the course and scope of employment.
V. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The incumbent in this position may be required, with or without reasonable accommodation, to lift up to 10 pounds on a frequent basis; use repetitive arm and wrist motions; bend, stoop, twist, reach; and possess mobility to traverse, uneven terrain. The Commodities Specialist is responsible to execute on the commercial operations for designated customer accounts. In addition, responsible to manage assigned set(s) of ingredients.
