The Shift Supervisor is responsible for leading and managing all aspects of Powerhouse operations for a designated shift, including safety, quality, production, costs, environmental control and employee relations. The Shift Supervisor also has mill-wide responsibilities for prioritizing shift maintenance and responding to emergencies. The position reports to the PRC Superintendent. The position will supervise Powerhouse personnel on shift basis.
How You will impact WestRock:
Lead plant safety policies and procedures including housekeeping practices. Promote safety engagement among all employees.
Lead both pre-shift safety meetings and monthly safety training meetings. Track employee attendance and ensure 100% compliance with mill safety training initiatives.
Build effective relationships with all internal departments. Communicate and coordinate powerhouse activities to support mill wide efficiency across departmental lines.
Control process and production workflow to ensure safe and effective use of available equipment capacity, labor and tools.
Coordinate maintenance work, customer, and manufacturing needs
Monitor all process controls and procedures. Ensure shift is meeting departmental KPI's.
Ensure adherence to departmental quality procedures.
Coach and counsel team members to perform to company standards. Document and administer performance improvement following the collective bargaining contract.
Lead and deliver performance evaluations to all hourly employees assigned to the shift. Provide monthly evaluations for new hires assigned to shift.
Develop and/or update safety and operational procedures and training materials as needed.
Alter schedules to adapt to unforeseen conditions.
Be the first point of contact for all hourly employee concerns.
Supervise assigned shift employees to accomplish daily safety, quality, productivity and efficiency goals.
Complete daily timekeeping duties, attendance reports, and shift reports accurately. Administer attendance discipline as necessary per the union contract.
Ensure daily production and maintenance tasks and assignments are completed.
Excellent problem-solving ability
Ability to communicate effectively – both verbal and written communications.
Strong organizational and leadership skills

- The primary job responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to, properly operate, maintain and repair Powerhouse machinery and equipment. The Operator will be required to document and maintain accurate records. Specific duties include proper operation, maintenance and troubleshooting three 2.2 MW Wartsila generators, with 4160 volt distribution system and switchgear, two 700 horsepower 150psi Cleaver Brooks steam boilers, four centrifuges, five Air Compressors, and seven Deep Well Pumps. Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations, L.L.C, one of the largest manufacturing corporations in Iowa, is currently seeking a certified and experienced factory maintenance skilled trade worker for an opening as a Powerhouse Engineer (Boiler Operator).
The Powerhouse Engineer position is an hourly position with a starting rate of $28.30 / hour.
Operates and maintains stationary engines and mechanical equipment, such as steam engines, air compressors, generators, motors, turbines, steam builder feed water pumps, water softeners, cooling towers and heaters in the steam and water system.
Observes meters and gauges to determine operating conditions of equipment and makes adjustments or repairs as necessary to insure efficient performance.
Keeps clerical records, such as temperatures of equipment and hours of operation, fuel consumed and temperature and analysis of flue gases.
Observes prescribed safety regulations pertaining to the use and care of the boilers and equipment.
Changes Charts as assigned related to Powerhouse and Curing Services. Make startup and shutdown of Curing systems.
Continue making inspection rounds, repair pumps in place, including coupling, un-coupling and pump/motor alignment. If possible, make pump replacement parts crib items, set pump thrust after startup.
Repairs valves by repacking and replacement, Repairs and Replaces Piping and Gaskets on Main Utility Piping as assigned.
Take samples, make tests, and services all steam and water chemical treatment systems in the powerhouse, plant and Warehouse.
Transports equipment, tools and machinery to the job site as required to perform the required work.
Performs simple electric or oxyacetylene welding and cutting and use other hand tools to fabricate or repair metal parts as required for efficient Powerhouse operations. Remove and replace guards or minor machine elements interfering with assigned work
Applicants must be dependable, reliable, hard working, self motivated and willing to learn. In addition, all applicants must meet the following requirements:
Must have 5 years of Boiler Operations experience
Must have a City of Des Moines 1st Class Engineers License OR take and pass the 1st Class Engineers License test within 90 days of hiring
Must have experience with operations/maintenance of steam and condensate systems, air compressors/air systems, and pumps/pumping system
Experience in Electrical and Welding Skills are a plus
The plant is a continuous operations facility. Applicants must be able to work either a day or night shift and every other weekend. Making changes to utilities, electrical generation and fuel distributions for cost savings
Troubleshooting of electrical and mechanical systems
Inspection of operating and stand-by equipment. Monitoring and trending of equipment status for proper operation.
Training of hourly personnel on the proper operation of equipment.
Performing required paperwork for payroll, safety, scheduling and maintenance work orders. Scheduling, timekeeping and paying employees.
Ensuring the safety of all personnel and making required safety contacts. Keep records on safety program and training of employees.
Promote a positive work culture by being a role model for communication, safety, teamwork and education.
Must be willing to function in hot, noisy areas around rotating equipment. Hazards include working with high pressure steam, potential exposure to boiler water treatment chemicals, blast furnace gas, natural gas, fuel oil and asbestos.
Must be willing to work around high voltage electrical systems. Can include heavy lifting and opening /closing large valves.
Must be willing to work in confined spaces, climb and work from heights. Required to work outside periodically.
