Pipe Layer
Essential Responsibilities
- Responsible for assembling, connecting, and constructing pipe systems for storm or sanitation sewers, drains, and water mains. Ensures ground is prepped and trenches dug out for pipes. Aligns pipes and seals joints together with cement or glue.
- Configures pipe routes. Aligns pipes in pipeline sections.
- Installs precast manholes and structures set up pipe lasers, read transits for elevations.
- Communicates with other workers regarding pipe placement in preparation for welding.
- Removes defective or misaligned pipes. Corrects alignments with sledgehammers.
- Inspects places where pipes are fitted together to ensure pipes are spaced out properly and according to specifications.
- Grades trenches or culverts.
- Ensures pipes are fitted and aligned using grade rods or transit levels.
- Drills holes into pipes for auxiliary lines.
- Performs continual maintenance on pipes and replace those needing repair.
- Utilizes magnetic or radio indicators.
- 3 years or more of pipe layer experience.
- Ability to read and understand blueprints (a plus)

Job Summary
This position is responsible for installing pipe in ditches; manually digging around utilities; conducting pressure tests of steel and plastic lines; participating in the repair of third party damage to natural gas lines and various types of gas leaks; completing pipe maintenance activities; safely driving a company vehicle; setting up common Department of Transportation (DOT) approved work sites and flagging traffic; maintaining truck inventory; and installing test charts. Level depends on knowledge, experience, and decision making.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience
Duties are performed while working outside in varying weather conditions, involve extensive walking and entering/exiting the Company vehicle, and require some heavy lifting up to 70 lbs. Position requires a good mechanical aptitude including experience with common hand and power tools, the ability to use self-contained breathing apparatus equipment, a demonstrated knowledge of safety procedures, effective communication skills for customer interactions, and a willingness to work with others in a team environment.
Position requires availability for natural gas emergency response after normal working hours, as needed. Basic computer skills are preferred. Applicants must reside within a 45 minute response time. Bilingual (Spanish) candidates are preferred.
Education Requirements
Completion of high school or equivalent (i.e., GED) accredited by an organization that is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or one of the entities recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

Minimum Qualifications:
1. A valid Driver's License is preferred.
2.Previous experience constructing pipe systems on construction jobs is preferred.
3.Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen and physical. Essential Duties/Responsibilites: -Check slopes for conformance to requirements, using levels or lasers.
Cover pipes with earth or other materials.
Connect pipe pieces and seal joints, using welding equipment, cement, or glue.
Cut pipes to required lengths.
Install or repair sanitary or stormwater sewer structures or pipe systems.
Install or use instruments such as lasers, grade rods, or transit levels.
Grade or level trench bases, using tamping machines or hand tools.
Lay out pipe routes, following written instructions or blueprints and coordinating layouts with supervisors.
Align and position pipes to prepare them for welding or sealing.
Dig trenches to desired or required depths, by hand or using trenching tools.
Tap and drill holes into pipes to introduce auxiliary lines or devices.
Timely and regular attendance is essential.

Primary Responsibilities
Plan and coordinate the installation of pipe Systems for underground utilities and above ground equipment.
Read drawings for the installation of piping systems.
Maintain working knowledge of established project procedures relating to safety, work permitting, work order systems, planning and scheduling, and preventive and predictive maintenance.
Examine/inspect field conditions and identify problems, inaccuracies, and cost saving measures that arise or that may be encountered. Take corrective actions as needed.
Understand and implement lockout/tag-out procedures in a safe manner.
Monitor craft compliance with project safety program requirements and document and ensure corrective measures are implemented
