PRIMARY PURPOSE: Responsible for working on individual mold platform, worker prepares different size mold covers or boxes by waxing the mold down with resin and placing fiberglass so concrete mixture can be poured into mold.
MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Prepares metal mold or core, which sits on metal platform about 6 inches off the work floor.
- Using special wax, mold and “hat” are waxed down so concrete will not stick to concrete, the mold, or the hat. Wax is put on with large brush. Rolls fiberglass onto mold and hat by hand, pressing fiberglass to inside of mold.
- Wax may be re-applied again. Fiberglass is cut with large scissors and hand formed to the core mold and hat. Worker feels the fiberglass with his hands to ensure the tack resin sticks to the core mold and hat.
- Worker bends over the mold to place wax and fiberglass. Stands under the “hat” to wax and place fiberglass inside “hat”, which requires some overhead work as “hat” remains about 5-6 feet of the ground, held in place by the overhead hoist. “Hat” is about 4 feet off ground so worker uses brush and fiberglass at or above shoulder height.
- Using the hoist and after all prep work is done, worker pushes hat above mold and lines it up over mold (about 3-4 pounds of force used to push “hat” on the electric hoist).
- Using the buttons on the electric hoist, lowers “hat” onto mold and pushes buttons to operate hydraulic lines to finish putting hat onto mold to allow tight fit.
- Places lynch pins and other hardware to tighten hat to floor platform. Pins and hardware about 6 inches from floor on platform. Uses hand tools and pneumatic air drill to tighten hat to platform.
- Mixes concrete batch using large plastic bucket (on floor) that has hardware on outside of bucket so it can be attached to overhead hoist.
- Uses plastic 2-quart pitcher to scoop chemicals out of bins (calcium, sand, rock) and then measures/pours catalyst into bucket to make concrete batch. Uses electric, hand held mixer/auger to mix concrete.
- After concrete is mixed, worker attaches overhead hoist to hardware on bucket to raise bucket over hat/mold, and spreads concrete into mold evenly. Uses a scraper to evenly spread concrete. Smoothes off top of concrete box.
- Turns on vibrator on mold to help remove air pockets. Scrapes off excess concrete to assure smooth top.
- When concrete set up, unhooks lynch pins to free hat from floor platform.
- Releases the hydraulic lines to free up hat from mold.
- Using hoist, connects it to hat and lifts up hat from mold with concrete box inside hat.
- Moves/pushes hat (with container part inside hat), using buttons on hoist, conveyor belt. Places hat and box on conveyor belt (roller type conveyor line).
- Releases hat from concrete box. May use rubber mallet to hit the (concrete) part to help release concrete box.
- Spray paints order number, etc. on box using stencil and spray paint.
- (Worker prepares one mold at a time while the other mold with the concrete sets up. While the concrete is curing, worker prepares the other old so every few minutes there is a box being made.)
- Noise, dust, moving air, vibration, temperature extremes, humidity, and moving machinery
- Protective eyewear, earplugs, rubber, metal and plastic scrapers, hand tools, pneumatic air drill, rubber mallet, rags, gloves and/or arm protectors, plastic apron, spray paint, hammer, drain carts, plywood, measuring devices, brooms, etc.
