General Description: Performs semiskilled work in the operation of light trucks and other light automotive and maintenance equipment. Performs manual labor, much of which is construction related.
EMERGENCY RESPONSE/RECOVERY ACTIVITIES: All employees will be required to work before, during, or after an Emergency. During an Emergency employees may temporarily be assigned to work and perform duties outside the normal scope of their position, location and work schedule to fit the needs of the County and its citizens.
Essential Job Functions:Operates the following equipment: flatbed truck, four-ton-yard dump truck, pickup truck, water truck, tractor with front-end loader, mowing tractor, water pump, air compressor, chain and cement saws, cement mixers and portable compactors. May operate heavier equipment on a relief or trainee basis to acquire necessary skill and experience.
Works in a variety of unskilled and semiskilled tasks. Performs minor repair of equipment.
Performs related work as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of light-duty, motor-driven equipment.
Knowledge of the traffic laws, ordinances and regulations involved in the operation of such equipment.
Knowledge of standard safety equipment and procedures involved in operation of equipment. Ability to understand and follow oral or written instructions. Ability to perform heavy manual labor under any type of weather conditions.
Ability to read technical manuals for comprehension. Construction related manual work preferred.
PHYSICAL SKILLS: Ability to lift and/or move up to 90 pounds and also push or pull heavy objects.
May use a handling device (dolly, cart, etc.) or work with another team member to lift and/or move excessively heavy objects. Ability to stand for long periods of time. EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Must possess a High School Diploma or GED or must be obtained within six months from hire. One year of general work experience involving operation of light maintenance equipment and performance of manual work.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATIONS: Must possess a valid driver's license.

VDOT is seeking a qualified individuals to serve on the Atlee Bridge Crew (Hanover County) to repair, maintain and replace bridges and structures in accordance with established safety standards, VDOT specifications/procedures, and equipment operation standards. You will operate light, medium-duty highway equipment to perform maintenance and construction related tasks; perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs on equipment and tools; and perform manual labor and other tasks as needed to assist the team in accomplishing construction, repair and maintenance of timber, steel and concrete bridges/structures.
Position will perform carpentry, welding and concrete finishing; remove and install structural components to erect, replace or demolish structures; apply MUTCD for detours, lane closures, work zones, etc.; and follow VDOT safety regulations and practices. You will place temporary bridges and remove damaged structures; prepare and operate equipment for emergency operations, to clear roadways of snow, ice and debris, clean up after accidents and provide traffic control.

Skill in carpentry, concrete forming/finishing and welding; and in the operation and use of light and medium-duty equipment (dump trucks, backhoes, rubber tire front end loaders and etc.), as well as in the use of hand and power tools.
Ability to perform minor repairs and preventative maintenance on equipment and tools; to perform heavy manual labor; to perform mathematical calculations to measure and lay out constructed elements on bridges and culverts; and to work at heights, over and, or in water, in heavy traffic and under other adverse conditions. Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 6 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High School Diploma / GED; Military Experience would be helpful;
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with the typical problems that occur in rail car switching.
