Shear Operator - 2Nd Shift

The purpose of this position is to insure proper grade and diameter material is pulled from inventory and distributed to the shears and band saws based on information contained on work orders. In addition this position will also assist in maintaining an accurate raw material inventory. Will set up and operate manual shear, automatic shear and band saws.
Using an overhead crane to unload incoming steel and locate as needed.
Set-up and operate all equipment in the shear area used to cut material to length.
Perform and document all quality checks and shear logs for all orders.
Change or replace shear dies, saw blades and cutting tools as required to insure cut end of acceptable quality.
Assure all cut material is properly labeled before removing from the shears.
Performs other related duties as assigned
- Ability to interpret drawings and work order packets to set-up equipment and run acceptable product.
Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Must be able to trouble shoot and correct minor problems in this work center.
High School graduate, GED or equivalent experience
Special Position Requirements:
The employee is subject to an environment that is at time congested with product boxes, material, etc. The employee is exposed to the hazard of mobile equipment moving in close areas. High noise levels are present in most areas the employee works.
Walking, sitting, and standing as required. Handling of product as required (less than 35 lbs). Handling of dies as required (up to 40 lbs). Specific vision abilities required by this job include: close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision color vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. This position is responsible for using an overhead crane to unload and move bundles of raw material weighing up to 9,000 lbs. Ability to us overhead crane, manual and automatic shears, automatic ban saw, tape measure, calculator, hoist, and calipers.

The Shear Tag Operator will monitor the cooling bed and bundle tying equipment while focusing on safety, quality products, and efficient operation. This individual is responsible for bundle integrity, verification of length control, and bar quality while providing feedback to the Pulpit Operator and Mill Supervisor of equipment conditions and areas of improvement. The Shear Tag Operator will learn different facets of the Rolling Mill operator roles, routinely performing multiple operating roles in more than one area of the Rolling Mill. Successful candidates will have a strong safety mindset and a desire to learn.

Basic summary of the job: Sets up and operates power shear to cut metal objects such as plates, sheets, or bars, to specified dimensions and angle
Essential (primary) functions include but are not limited to:
Assures proper operation of shear equipment by monitoring quality of parts produced and conducting 1st Article procedures
Ensure materials exiting shears are properly marked and banded per standard procedures
Stage materials properly to assure operators/loaders can efficiently lift and load materials
Responsible for turning in all completed work orders and production reports at the end of the shift
Reports accidents, injuries and incidents immediately to the supervisor
Responsible for assuring productivity standards are consistently met
Responsible for maintaining an orderly work area around assigned equipment and drop areas, housekeeping and material staging areas
Follow all safety procedures
Adhere to Quality policy at all times

Monitors the quality of incoming steel and determines when material is substandard. Uses hand banding equipment, tape measures, and micrometers. Performs calibration and setup of both pieces of equipment for changes of coil or thickness.

Long Products Rolling Mill Vacation Coverage Operator
Perform a number of duties in the continuous mill that provide the mill the best opportunity to operate at an efficient level. Be able to perform the exit operator's duties at an adequate level during the absence of any of the continuous mill operators.
