Machine Shop Manager
This Manager position within the Mechanical Operations department and is responsible for ensuring the effective execution of Ball Aerospace's development and production Machining capabilities.
What You'll Do:
Ensure the effective fabrication of aerospace hardware through the development and implementation of highly disciplined processes and protocols.
Optimize machining effectiveness by improving communication, equipment, and infrastructure.
Support the development of new manufacturing capabilities including the 3D printing of various metals.
Supervise Machine shop operations and departmental functions and ensure all policies, procedures, and processes meet and support program and company objectives.
Staff and manage the performance of ~40 machinists
Establish, maintain, report, and action machining capability performance metrics that include safety, first pass yield, and on-time delivery.
Estimate machine shop piece parts within +/- 10% to assist in scheduling of hardware and to help fully understand capacity constraints
Establish a risk and opportunity management program for the machining capability
Make business case decisions for make vs. buy of program hardware
Work closely with Scheduling to communicate work center capacities and set priorities based on skillset
Write and conduct performance appraisals.
Manage resources and personnel across a multiple campus environment
Identify capital equipment requirements and develop business cases to support acquisition
Ensure the Machine Shop remains compliant to AS 9100 rev D
Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the Strategic Business Units, Strategic Support Units and the Company. Interact appropriately with others in order to maintain a positive and productive work environment.
Perform other duties as necessary.
What You'll Need:
BS/BA in a related field plus 8 or more years related experience.
Each higher-level degree, i.e. Master's Degree or Ph.D., may substitute for two years of experience. Two years of related experience may be substituted for each year of education. Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education.
Experience with non-tradtional workshifts a plus
Proven ability to set the tactical direction by aligning resources (people, facilities, equipment) to meet near term customer needs and concurrently develop longer term strategies to be in alignment with future business demands
Positive, proactive, and passionate with demonstrated leadership skills in influencing, driving change, and motivating & developing people
Excellent teaming skills as leader, member, facilitator, and coach to build bench strength/depth
Demonstrated effective communication skills in order to build a customer service mindset among reports
A bias for action in developing and implementing improvement plans to increase manufacturing yield and reduce fabrication set-up times

Effective listening skills and capable of resolving conflicts quickly with win-win solutions/outcomes. Ability to provide direct feedback & handle performance problems quickly
Experience with Lean, 6S, BSI and AS9100 rev D
Strong working knowledge of Mastercam, Agile, IFS scheduling, process data collection, Velocity, and all machining processes.
Additive manufacturing experience highly desirable
Work is performed in an office, clean room, or production environment.
Exposure to paint thinners, solvents, loud noises, etc.
May be required to wear protective equipment such as safety glasses, respirators, etc., as necessary.
Travel and local commute between Ball campuses and other possible non-Ball locations may be required.

Machine Shop Supervisor
SUMMARYResponsible for Day-to-Day production in the machine shop.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES includes the following. Other Duties may be assigned.
Has sound technical knowledge for the specific discipline (process) being supervised. In addition has good understanding of the machine shop and assembly flow.
Has excellent skills in supervision, communicates effectively, and is a good listener. When making decisions use logic and rational thought.
Must feedback information to subordinates on all issues of performance. Must practice the procedure of progressive discipline where required. Must understand the concept of documenting performance, acceptable and not acceptable.
Should be able to conduct a meeting of subordinates or peers, should be able to discern the difference between what is pertinent and not pertinent to the subject on the table. Should be able to summarize the event and dispatch action items accordingly. Should be able to follow through and close the loop with said action items.
Must understand production schedules. Must understand the requirement of making sure any changes made or required have to be transacted in the system. Must emphasize this with subordinates.
Understands both the philosophical and practical elements of quality. Makes the quality of the product and the employees' understanding of quality the same importance as production.
Understands productivity requirements, makes sure employees' reporting to him understand the same. Constantly looks for ways to increase throughput while maintaining or improving quality.
Has a thorough understanding of safe working practices and what to do in the case of an emergency.
Must actively pursue enhancements to education, through college courses, or through accredited seminars. These must address the basic concepts of business management.
Understands the basics of manpower planning. Has the ability to develop comprehensive plans for cross training and implement those plans.
Is able to construct and write a concise and accurate performance review, will assemble the necessary supporting performance documents, critique them, and make a sensible and reasonable recommendation for merit/demerit, and promotion or demotion. Must set goals that are meaningful, and will cause growth for the company and individual.
Demonstrates a high level of initiative, when a situation arises, (whatever it may be), will remain calm; will not panic; will take an objective view and respond appropriately. Will recognize when a higher level of management is required to intervene, and when not.
Must understand systematic document flow as prescribed by ISO 9000, will make sure subordinates follow this. Must work toward a systemized method of operation, which chooses logic over emotion.
Must understand the concept of continuous improvement, must practice this and address the issues of cost reduction, flow time improvement, and improvement in quality. Will also make the necessary changes in the engineering/scheduling system to close the loop, and show effect of said improvements.
Must have a clear understanding of all measurement systems used in the machine shop. Additionally, Supervisors need to know how to utilize data from measurement systems to improve productivity, quality, efficiency and the operations of their departments.
Directly supervises 20 or more employees in the Machine Shop. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees: planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Our Volt Irvine branch has partnered with a leading aerospace manufacturer in North Irvine to help identify multiple 2nd shift Aerospace Machine Shop Production Workers with experience reading blueprints for an immediate temp to hire position. Our client offers a friendly, casual and stable work environment.
In this role, you may be involved with performing a variety of duties including; fitting, sanding, grinding, machine operating, deburring of machined parts. We are hiring for 2nd shift starting at 3pm. May be required to work 10-hour days as needed. Pay is $14-17/hr depending on experience.
Our client is willing to train anyone with 6 months or more production experience with the ability to read machine shop blueprints. Must be able to understand tolerances on a blueprint.

Summary Under the direction of the Machine Shop Superintendent, the Machine Shop Supervisor directs employees; reviews work orders and ensures that production schedules are met; organizes and assigns work, and assists employees in their performance. The Machine Shop Supervisor anticipates maintenance and personnel problems and resolves the problems to minimize their effect on production.

Machine Shop Supervisor
The machine shop supervisor will provide a structured environment that enables Machine Shop employees to produce high quality goods.
Responsible for developing, implementing and maintaining production methods, operation sequences and processes. In addition, is required to use lead personnel to supervise an entire department to ensure proper time charging, maintaining proper certification levels and training of employees to achieve full capability in the specific job area.
Develop improved processes and equipment to enhance production and/or overall department capability.
Drive processes to handle increased workloads or improved product quality.
Measure productivity of personnel and equipment.
Create Work Instructions as follows: reflect drawing and specification requirements in final product configuration, guarantee proper induction of good material to the operation, and insure step-by-step sequence of operations to achieve final product by appropriate/anticipated personnel skill level.
Ensure proper tooling configuration and supply.
Maintain equipment to satisfactory state of readiness for production.
Train employees for certification at specific work stations.
Supervise lead personnel and assist in department personnel development.
Work effectively in coordinating department activities with associated groups.
Provide labor estimates and process development requirements (i.e., tooling, first piece labor, production line setup) inputs for proposal preparation
Schedule shop activities to ensure efficient cost effective performance.
Ensure compliance to established standards and company policy.
Other Duties as assigned.
Ten (10) or more years' experience in the machining field.
5 years of machine shop management.
Must be able to develop, track, and present performance metrics.
Working knowledge of sheet metal processing.
Must be a positive leader that has the ability to reward and discipline employees as required.
Ability to program using Gibbs cam or Surfcam a plus.
Good organisational skills, able to plan ahead, prioritise tasks and co-ordinate with the work of others.
Must be proficient in Microsoft office software.
Understanding of Lean and 5S concepts a plus.

Must be able to see imperfections, micrometer readings and other small scales.
Must be able to communicate by voice and detect sound by ear.
Must be able to distinguish color and judge three-dimensional depth.
May be required to operate power vehicles, machinery, hand tools, fork lift, etc.
