Machine Shop Manager
This Manager position within the Mechanical Operations department and is responsible for ensuring the effective execution of Ball Aerospace's development and production Machining capabilities.
What You'll Do:
Ensure the effective fabrication of aerospace hardware through the development and implementation of highly disciplined processes and protocols.
Optimize machining effectiveness by improving communication, equipment, and infrastructure.
Support the development of new manufacturing capabilities including the 3D printing of various metals.
Supervise Machine shop operations and departmental functions and ensure all policies, procedures, and processes meet and support program and company objectives.
Staff and manage the performance of ~40 machinists
Establish, maintain, report, and action machining capability performance metrics that include safety, first pass yield, and on-time delivery.
Estimate machine shop piece parts within +/- 10% to assist in scheduling of hardware and to help fully understand capacity constraints
Establish a risk and opportunity management program for the machining capability
Make business case decisions for make vs. buy of program hardware
Work closely with Scheduling to communicate work center capacities and set priorities based on skillset
Write and conduct performance appraisals.
Manage resources and personnel across a multiple campus environment
Identify capital equipment requirements and develop business cases to support acquisition
Ensure the Machine Shop remains compliant to AS 9100 rev D
Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the Strategic Business Units, Strategic Support Units and the Company. Interact appropriately with others in order to maintain a positive and productive work environment.
Perform other duties as necessary.
What You'll Need:
BS/BA in a related field plus 8 or more years related experience.
Each higher-level degree, i.e. Master's Degree or Ph.D., may substitute for two years of experience. Two years of related experience may be substituted for each year of education. Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education.
Experience with non-tradtional workshifts a plus
Proven ability to set the tactical direction by aligning resources (people, facilities, equipment) to meet near term customer needs and concurrently develop longer term strategies to be in alignment with future business demands
Positive, proactive, and passionate with demonstrated leadership skills in influencing, driving change, and motivating & developing people
Excellent teaming skills as leader, member, facilitator, and coach to build bench strength/depth
Demonstrated effective communication skills in order to build a customer service mindset among reports
A bias for action in developing and implementing improvement plans to increase manufacturing yield and reduce fabrication set-up times
Ability to influence resources outside span of control; ability to work in a complex matrixed organization
An error prevention mindset - must demonstrate in words and actions the criticality of maintaining a world class quality record
Effective listening skills and capable of resolving conflicts quickly with win-win solutions/outcomes. Ability to provide direct feedback & handle performance problems quickly
Experience with Lean, 6S, BSI and AS9100 rev D
Strong working knowledge of Mastercam, Agile, IFS scheduling, process data collection, Velocity, and all machining processes.
Additive manufacturing experience highly desirable
Work is performed in an office, clean room, or production environment.
Exposure to paint thinners, solvents, loud noises, etc.
May be required to wear protective equipment such as safety glasses, respirators, etc., as necessary.
Travel and local commute between Ball campuses and other possible non-Ball locations may be required.

Machine Shop Supervisor (1st Shift) - Router Shop
The Router Machine Shop Supervisor is responsible for all machining processes within the shop. This candidate will be tasked with ensuring all areas of production are meeting corporate goals. Key components of this position will be reporting to machine shop management, troubleshooting production issues, working with machining technicians, manufacturing engineers and quality engineers to identify and execute process improvements and automating repetitive manual tasks. Ensure all work order tickets are completed on time and to specification
Responsible for leading and managing up to 40 employees
Manage the entirety of the production flow within the machine shop, ensuring efficiency and safety of all employees
Resolve reoccurring non-conformance issues
Review work instructions and making change recommendations
Meet tight production schedules
Monitor material costs and savings
Develop, initiate, coordinate and enforce system policies
Monitor labor hours and overtime and implement time management improvement plans
- High school diploma or GED
- 3 years in a supervisory role within a machine shop
Preferred Skills and Experience:
2 years of experience in a manufacturing/process improvement role
Well versed in set ups, operation and troubleshooting of all CNC and Conventional Lathe/Mill Machines
Experience with manual machines
Managed teams of up to 10 people and 3 machines simultaneously
Well versed in GD&T and inspection procedures
Knowledge of lean principles and Six Sigma
Well versed in all machine shop manufacturing processes
Ability to read and interpret all blue prints and engineering drawings
Experience working with Production Machine Shop tracking metrics
Ability to develop 3 to 5 year production plans
Ability to lift up to 25lbs
Ability to work all shift hours and weekend as needed

Supervises the facility machine shop.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Manage the successful transition of new jobs and technology onto the Machine Shop floor
Write machine justification requests
Participate in concurrent design reviews.
Evaluate and write routings/Machine Shop Instructions, specs and other documents.

Summary Under the direction of the Machine Shop Superintendent, the Machine Shop Supervisor directs employees; reviews work orders and ensures that production schedules are met; organizes and assigns work, and assists employees in their performance. The Machine Shop Supervisor anticipates maintenance and personnel problems and resolves the problems to minimize their effect on production.

Machine Shop Supervisor
The Manufacturing Supervisor will be responsible for 20 to 30 direct production personnel. This person will be responsible for meeting daily production goals, training employees on continuous process improvements, and maintaining the highest quality standards. Oversees, monitors and coordinates manufacturing team activities in one or more production areas such as assembly, machining, welding, painting, fabrication, or other operations support functions. May support the Commercial OE, Military or Aftermarket functions of the Company. Provides leadership for all departmental operations in a manner that supports safety, quality, on-time delivery, financial, and continuous improvement goals of department and operation.
Manages all production processes for assigned area or line, and interfaces extensively with quality, program management, supply chain, and other departments as needed to ensure timely and high-quality production of the product.
Ensures that the duties, responsibilities, authority, and accountability of all direct and indirect reports are defined and understood. Establishes annual objectives for direct reports and reviews performance to objectives at least bi-annually in a timely manner.
Develops and oversees the analysis and review of budgets, schedules, production requirements and headcount to determine the most cost-effective and efficient methods of obtaining necessary resources while ensuring improved performance in quality, cost, delivery, safety, and morale.
Takes an active leadership role in development and implementation of continuous process improvement tools in assigned department(s) including Lean, Six Sigma, 5S, TPM, KAS, Value Stream Flow and other ACE tools as appropriate.
Manages the planning and designing of methods to improve or enhance existing programs and processes.
Responsible for the development and implementation of manufacturing processes and/or equipment to maintain proper product functionality as well as cost efficiency and resource allocation.
Provides regular and timely reports and interpretation of results to the Operations Manager
Monitors metrics and visual boards in the work area. Takes appropriate and timely action when metrics indicate downward trends or fall below acceptable limits. Continually monitor metrics to assure meaningful measurements are present to reflect actual daily trends and activities of the production process.
Takes an active role in identifying training needs, nurturing, challenging and developing both direct and indirect reports in their positions for future opportunities.
Takes an active leadership role to ensure established environmental, health and safety standards and procedures are met and complied with in assigned department(s).
Ensures quality product utilizing UTAS quality procedures.
Audits work area for safety compliance.
Adheres to all UTAS rules and codes of conduct.
Performs other duties as required.

THIS IS A FIRST SHIFT WEEKEND POSITION - FRIDAY - SUNDAY 05:00-17:30
Assists with supervision of workers engaged in operating variety of machines to manufacture parts or products by performing the following duties. Directly supervises 40+ employees on the Machining floor. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Supervise production employees in a growing CNC Machining environment.
Maintain communication with 1st shift supervisor and programmers to ensure order-fill process and team shift transition.
Facilitate and participate in necessary training of production employees.
Allocate personnel to complete production schedule.
Collect and analyze production data to facilitate fact-based management.
Review payroll detail reports and make correction in compliance with company policies.
Education and/or Experience:
5-8 years related experience
Associates degree a plus
Previous supervisory experience required
Direct machining experience in CNC Milling, CNC Turning, Swiss etc.
Understanding of GD&T and inspection practices
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
Ability to speak effectively before groups.
Ability to apply basic mathematical concepts using all units of measure.
Prior experience with Kronos and Oracle a plus.
Proficiency with MS Excel to compile and present data in visual formats.

Machine Shop Supervisor
Position reports to the Machine Shop Manager and is responsible for all machine shop operations and personnel supervision.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Overall responsibility for departmental operations to meet quality, delivery, and cost goals for the organization and its customers
Provide leadership and technical direction to allow team to improve according to key departmental metrics
Daily reporting of key metrics and adherence to daily targets
Maintain shift rotation schedule in accordance with the needs of the business
Create a positive working environment which is committed to excellence, by demonstrating personal commitment to these ideals
Provide leadership in establishing standard processes and tools
Manage personnel performance, including employee reviews, disciplinary action, time and attendance, overtime assignments, employee training
Ensure the use of lean manufacturing tools in the development of new processes
Lead continuous improvement endeavors throughout the department
Regularly communicate departmental updates to Managers
HR functions including performance problems through corrective action and sustainment of job performance standards and objectives
Departmental health and safety compliance; accident prevention; injury prevention; equipment safety, as well as, compliance with all company goals and objectives
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
2 year college degree or equivalent education required
4 year technical or business degree or equivalent education preferred
Manufacturing aerospace parts experience preferred
Leadership experience preferred
Proven knowledge of machining processes using a wide variety of machine tools
Understanding of CNC type machines and the processes they use, including set-ups, monitoring, change-outs, multi- pallet use, optimization
Proficient experience with Lean Manufacturing work area practices including 5-S, Visual Controls, Standard Work, work center metrics, and continuous improvement processes and able to instruct others in these practices
Familiar with level blueprint reading and machining related math skills
Strong leadership skills at all levels, good work ethic. Ability to professionally communicate and work cooperatively with others
Basic English language skills and ability to read, follow, and interpret work instructions
Attention to detail and maintain clean/orderly work area
Willingness to learn and, as required, help and/or train others
MSOffice and ERP system knowledge
