This position works in the production of heat exchangers (ASME pressure vessels) from carbon steel, stainless steel & nickel alloys. This position works from drawings, sketches or instructions to produce parts in accordance with the daily production schedule. The successful candidate must have the ability to operate CNC machines such as drill presses, and lathes.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Set up and operate all conventional and most precision Milling machines to manufacture parts and assemblies.
Programing and operating CNC is a big plus.
Perform shop calculations utilizing knowledge of material characteristics to determine optimum feeds, speeds, and dimensions.
Operate related shop equipment, hand tools, and measuring instruments.
Fabricate difficult fixtures and holding devices used during manufacturing processes.
Design and fabricate advanced fixtures and jigs to be used during a variety of manufacturing processes.
Establish and plan techniques and procedures to carry out advanced technical assignments and set task priorities.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Skills & Experience
Associate's degree in Machine Tool Technology, or equivalent completion of an apprenticeship program in the machining trade or equivalent level of related experience.
Demonstrated ability to perform highly complex machining operations involving conventional and CNC machine tools, also related manufacturing and measuring equipment.
Advanced knowledge of ASME Y14.5M drafting standards (read and interpret blueprints) to produce parts and assemblies is a plus.
Advanced knowledge of a wide variety of materials and manufacturing processes including some difficult to machine and exotic materials.
Ability to identify, analyze, and provide solutions or alternate approaches to manufacturing problems using individual judgment and creativity.
Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills necessary to communicate tactfully and effectively in a technical environment.

Two year post secondary Machine Tool Technology Certificate AND 4 years precision machining experience in the set up and operation of Vertical, Horizontal, Jig and Boring Mills, Turret and Engine Lathes, I.D. and O.D.
Grinders, Jig Grinders, Tool Grinders, Drill Presses and Radial Arm drills. Must be able to sharpen cutting tools and drills. Must know the use of and perform work using all types of machine shop measuring instruments.
Must achieve a satisfactory score on the mechanical aptitude test which is structured to determine the ability to perform essential job functions. This shop is a 24x7 operation. Must be willing and able to work alternate shifts, off days, weekends and holidays as required to meet operational demand.
Should demonstrate theoretical and working knowledge of jobs and skills performed in a machine shop. Must be able to read, write, comprehend and apply information contained in detailed and complex technical manuals, procedural manuals and blueprints with little or no assistance. Able to study, master and apply a series of steps, rules and guidelines needed to perform a variety of tasks. Able to respond with flexibility to change or multiple work assignments.

On a day-to-day basis, the Machinist is responsible for setting up and operating machine tools (manual mill, CNC, radial drill press, band saws, chop saws, press brakes, etc.) to produce precision metal parts, producing small batches or large quantities of metal parts, and ensuring products meet precise specifications.

The outside machinist trainee program is a joint partnership between Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries, Workforce Development and several local Virginia Community Colleges. The trainee program provides a candidate with the unique opportunity to build a career in shipbuilding. We encourage you to join our team of legacy skilled craftsman and apply today.
The course is 2 weeks (80 hours) long designed to prepare candidates to enter the outside machinist department at NNS. The course will cover safety, an introduction to varies tools and machinist skills, a validation of basic machinist competencies, and an evaluation of employability skills. This program is designed to be 90% hands-on, focusing on a candidate's ability to follow verbal and written instruction, display manual dexterity consistent with the craft, accomplish specific tasks in a reasonable time, and perform all activities in a safe manner.
All candidates are required to complete a Newport News Shipbuilding job application. Selected candidates will be scheduled to complete work keys testing, and an interview.
Offers of employment will be given to those candidates selected to participate in this program. The offer will include several contingencies including drug screen, physical and background check. Once the candidate has cleared the drug screen and physical they will be accepted in to the program.
The training program will be for 2 weeks from 7 am to 3:30 pm, Monday - Friday. If selected to participate in this training program, then the candidate will need to complete the college's enrollment process and pay a $250 tuition fee to the community college where the training will take place.
With the completion of the training program, along with meeting all other contingencies previously mentioned, the candidate will be given a start to work date through Newport News Shipbuilding and hired as an Outside Machinist. Once the employee starts to work, they will be reimbursed the $250 (subject to tax withholding) by Newport News Shipbuilding.

Skill in applying shop mathematics in establishing needed dimensions, such as those required for chasing threads or machining angular surfaces; locating and marking surfaces and angles to be machined. Skill in programming machining operations, setting up and operating CNC machine tools. Knowledge of and ability to apply advanced shop mathematics such as geometric and trigonometric formulas to make computation for laying out work, machining pieces at unusual or compound angles, determining gear ratios pitch, angles and other similar exact or precision dimension.
