Sets up and operates a variety of machine tools, and fits and assembles parts to fabricate or repair machine tools and maintain industrial machines by performing the following duties.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Observes and listens to operating machines or equipment to diagnose machine malfunction and determine the need for adjustments or repairs. Dismantles machine or equipment to examine parts for defects and to remove defective parts, as necessary. Installs or replaces defective parts in mechanisms, machines or equipment with new part or repairs or reproduces part from various kinds of metal stock.
Runs operational tests on the machine to verify dimensions and alignment of assembly and to ensure conformance of finished workpiece to specification. Verifies and corrects malfunctions.
Develops specifications from general description and draws a sketch of part or product to be fabricated. Studies blueprints, sketches, machine parts or specifications to determine type and dimensions of metal stock required.
Confers with engineers, production personnel, programmers, or others to resolve machining or assembly problems.
Measures, marks, and scribes dimensions and reference points on metal stock surfaces.
Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mills, lathes, and grinders.
Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut, or enters commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media according to the type of operation and specified material and finish.
Instructs operators or other workers in machine setup and operation.
Changes wornout cutting tools and adjust the operation of machine such as cutting speed, feed rate or depth of cut when required.
Maintains and lubricates machine tools and equipment.
Vocational/Technical Certificate/Diploma in Machining/Tool and Die plus a minimum of three years of experience

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations – Machinist Apprenticeship Program, in lieu of experience. Welding experience preferred but no mandatory. Knowledge of Autocad/Solidworks software applications, and CNC programming experience.
Element has an opportunity for a Machinist to join our rapidly expanding team. As a member of the operations team, the Machining position performs a variety of routine and non-routine machining assignments within the department assigned and insures timely and accurate test results under direct supervision. The technician positions must be proficient in a number of core business skills including but not limited to compliance to established safety rules, code of conduct, and company policies and procedures.
Uses cutting equipment to prepare specimens for testing as dictated in customer specifications
Designs, sets-up and performs a variety of machining tasks according to customer specifications and requirements
Requires little supervision and technical input of a Department Manager, Principal Machinist, Project Coordinator or Engineer
Possesses the ability to mentor and train machinists who have less experience through effective communication of machining process and technical data
Ability to transfer technical knowledge of machining procedures/requirements and successfully satisfy and meet customer expectations
Maintains equipment and schedules preventative maintenance
Gathers and records dimensions in accordance with quality assurance requirements
Skills / Qualifications
Working knowledge of laboratory safety
HS diploma or GED certificate preferred; College or vocational school coursework welcomed
Must have earned Associate degree in related testing or science field and/or possess 3-6 years of experience in a machining shop environment
In-depth understanding of specimen preparation
May have earned Associate degree mechanical related field
Depth of understanding related to machining concepts, measuring instruments and dimensional concepts
Working knowledge of machine shop safety protocol
Strong computer skills
Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry a plus
Frequency of required physical force: Moderate
Lifting requirements: lifting <50 lbs.="" often="" and=""> 50 lbs. on occasion
Ability to stand on feet for long periods of time
Ability to lift 50+lbs periodically

Sets up and operates conventional, special purpose, and computer numerical control (CNC) machines and machining centers to fabricate metallic parts to customer specifications by performing the following duties.
- Follow all health, safety and environmental policies, procedures and practices
- Monitor and maintain quality of work to ensure adherence to customer expectations
- Meet productivity standards and strive to increase productivity
- Set-up machines and verifies the accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data
- Select, align, and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments and accessories on machines such as mills and lathes
- Observe machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining
- Ability to interpret complex blueprints effectively, produce and measure product with tolerances of +/- .0005
- Fit and assemble parts into complete assembly and verify dimensions and alignment of assembly
- Confers with engineers, production personnel, programmers, or others to resolve machining problems
- Maintain regular and predictable attendance
- Fulltime 40 hr. commitment with occasional overtime expected
- Must be able to work while standing for up to 12 hours per day
- BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or GED and
- 6 months verifiable experience in a CNC metal machining environment if candidate has no formal training in machining technologies
- PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- One-year diploma or two-year associate degree in machining technologies are highly desired
