External Job Description
The outside machinist trainee program is a joint partnership between Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries, Workforce Development and several local Virginia Community Colleges. The trainee program provides a candidate with the unique opportunity to build a career in shipbuilding. We encourage you to join our team of legacy skilled craftsman and apply today.
The course is 2 weeks (80 hours) long designed to prepare candidates to enter the outside machinist department at NNS. The course will cover safety, an introduction to varies tools and machinist skills, a validation of basic machinist competencies, and an evaluation of employability skills. This program is designed to be 90% hands-on, focusing on a candidate's ability to follow verbal and written instruction, display manual dexterity consistent with the craft, accomplish specific tasks in a reasonable time, and perform all activities in a safe manner.
All candidates are required to complete a Newport News Shipbuilding job application. Selected candidates will be scheduled to complete work keys testing, and an interview.
Offers of employment will be given to those candidates selected to participate in this program. The offer will include several contingencies including drug screen, physical and background check. Once the candidate has cleared the drug screen and physical they will be accepted in to the program.
The training program will be for 2 weeks from 7 am to 3:30 pm, Monday - Friday. If selected to participate in this training program, then the candidate will need to complete the college's enrollment process and pay a $250 tuition fee to the community college where the training will take place.
With the completion of the training program, along with meeting all other contingencies previously mentioned, the candidate will be given a start to work date through Newport News Shipbuilding and hired as an Outside Machinist. Once the employee starts to work, they will be reimbursed the $250 (subject to tax withholding) by Newport News Shipbuilding.

The candidate must be able to understand written instructions and strong math skills are essential. This is a construction environment involving extreme heights, confined spaces, physical labor and various weather conditions within a shipyard environment.

Job Summary & Essential Functions: The following describes in general terms the purpose and scope of the position.
Sets up and operates conventional, special purpose, and computer numerical control (CNC) machines and machining centers to fabricate metallic and nonmetallic parts.
Studies and interprets blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample part to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work piece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.
Demonstrates ability to find detail part on the engineering drawing.
Determines correct blank size from the engineering drawing.
Measures mylars accurately to determine dimensions for machining steps.
Interprets all part characteristics from the drawing and determine fabrication steps.
Measures, marks, and scribes dimensions and references points on material or work piece as guides for subsequent machining.
Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mills, lathes.

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
One year experience as a skilled machinist and completion of a state recognized machinist apprenticeship program, or, three years of experience as a skilled machinist. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted at the discretion of the employer.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Ensures continued output of machined components. This is an advanced position that involves knowledge of various machine operations, as well as basic diagnostic abilities. If assigned, help ensure that changeovers are done efficiently and on a timely basis. Loads conveyor at the start of the line, and watches the supply for the remainder of the lines, made up of the following machines: proofturn, rotary transfer machining center, CNC multi-spindle, weight mill, accuriser, diamond turn, spindle lathe, 4-axis machining center, drill, & vertical milling center. Must be able to attain precise limits, tolerances and standards. Runs regularly scheduled quality checks on each line, using the Statistical Process Control methods. This can include the use of gauges, a comparator, as well as visual inspection. When a machine breaks down, this individual is responsible for assisting in diagnosis of the problem, either utilizing SPC, or knowledge based on experience. The starting wage for this position is $19.90/hr.
High school diploma or GED.
Availability to work any shift including days or nights (all shifts may require daily or weekend overtime).
Minimum one year of factory experience.
Must pass Federal-Mogul machinist test.
A minimum of 2 years CNC machining experience (metal-cutting machinery preferred), including setting up and operating as a machinist with gauging tolerance of machine parts.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints and specifications.
Must be able to attain precise limits, tolerances, and standards.
Must be able to successfully complete a pre-employment hair follicle drug screen, physical, and background check.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assists and/or operates basic drill presses, lathes, mills, saws and shears.
Cleans machines and work area.
Removes and discards metal chips from machines.
Maintains oil and coolant levels in the machines.
Performs kitting of production tools, fixtures, cutters and pre-cut raw material.
Prepares and saw cuts raw materials.
After complete instruction; operates machines, and inspects parts utilizing blue print dimensions and prescribed gauges.
May layout, fabricate, assemble and characterize components.
Expected to work in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices.
