The Materials Engineer is responsible for overseeing material specifications, material databases, internal and external material trials, material performance, and material developmental activities. Material oversight will be highly focused on but not limited to coextruded polyethylene films for the flexible packaging industry. Other materials may include adhesives, various papers, and laminated substrates related to the flexible packaging industry. Other primary responsibilities will include evaluating new materials and technologies to be used in manufacturing processes, writing specifications for new materials, and developing vendors for various materials. The Materials Engineer is responsible for the oversight of vendor quality assurance programs to ensure compliance with established standards.
Essential Duties and
- Serve as the primary corporate materials contact and resource.
- Coordinate all coextruded film formulas at all locations, internally produced or externally sourced, to ensure formulas are in line with corporate goals.
- All films produced for similar products regardless of manufacturing site should appear the same to the customer.
- All film should be designed with process-ability in mind.
- Films should be designed with the customer in mind to ensure they are consistent, perform well, and are conducive to high quality seals, closures, adhesion, and printing.
- Maintain the integrity of materials database and make accessible to organization.
- Collaborate effectively with organizational team members drawing from corporate experience.
- Ensure procedures are in place to hold suppliers accountable for material physical attributes, process-ability, and customer satisfaction.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with suppliers to include regular site visits and business relationship development.
- Help Ensure material quality through development and oversight of third party supplier’s quality assurance program.
- Develop and oversee material analysis programs (e.g. defective or substandard materials and root-cause analysis of materials deemed defective or to have failed).
- Identify and evaluate new technologies and materials in an effort to lower cost, achieve greater efficiencies, and improve product performance.
- Prepare cost-benefit analysis on the impact of new materials on production processes, yield, and product performance.
- Coordinate production trials of new materials and participates in the trials of new products.
- Develop and oversee processes for the introduction of new materials.

Renewable Energy LM Wind Power seeks a talented, flexible and committed materials engineer to work within material qualification engineering for wind turbine blades. In this role, you will develop our process material technology base by introducing advanced solutions, and will act as the technical lead, finding / investigating new products and technologies on the market in direct communication with suppliers.
The Materials Engineer will play a key role in the development, qualification and implementation of process materials and technologies, and will understand / communicate critical aspects of process materials in all stages of manufacturing and in their various applications. Together with a cross-functional team, the Materials Engineer seeks to optimize the balance between three key business aspects of quality, cost and performance through evaluation, testing, documentation and implementation.
As the Materials Engineer, you will:
Spend time with our laboratory technicians to develop components and test methods
Be involved / lead plant trials and the global implementation of the new technology and/or improvements
Be involved in general quality improvement in the factories, where a hands-on mentality is key
Maintain material specifications and associated documentation
Collaborate with our LM material testing lab
Participate as a commodity team member, defining and executing the global commodity strategy for process materials
Contribute to / execute the departmental material development strategy to support the product platforms and technology road-map
Work cross functionally within engineering and externally with Sourcing and Quality
Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field from an accredited university or college
Minimum of 5 years of practical experience
- Ability and willingness to travel as needed (minimum of 30 days per year)
Mechanical Engineering Degree from an accredited university or college with experience in manufacturing
Applies knowledge by establishing a robust supply chain within process materials in collaboration with sourcing and quality
Global perspective and drive towards striking an optimum balance between cost, quality and performance
Excellent communicator between functions / cultures that works well across departments and time zones
Analytical / scientific mindset combined with a pragmatic hands-on mentality
Practical experience with manufacturing processes of composite products
Understanding of / ability to apply lean six sigma principles or equivalent
Experience with process material characterization and testing
Strong communication skills in written and spoken English
