The mission of the Collider-Accelerator Department (C-AD) is to develop, improve and operate the suite of particle / heavy ion accelerators used to carry out the program of accelerator-based experiments at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL); to support the experimental program including design, construction and operation of the beam transports to the experiments, plus support of detector and research needs of the experiments; to design and construct new accelerator facilities in support of the BNL and national missions. The C-A Department supports an international user community of over 1,500 scientists. The department performs all these functions in an environmentally-responsible and safe manner, under a rigorous conduct of operations approach.
The Collider-Accelerator Department (C-AD) has an opening for a Mechanical Engineering Technician to perform a variety of non-routine technical functions typically involved with the fabrication, installation, operation, maintenance, and testing of equipment or facilities in connection with technical investigations. The ideal candidate will follow complex but standard procedures in performing assigned duties and will work under the direction and/or supervision of engineering staff.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
The equivalence of a technical institute or Associates Degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology
Six (6) years relevant work experience (or a BS in a technical field plus two years relevant work experience) in the operation, manufacture, assembly, and/or troubleshooting of complex mechanical or electromechanical equipment
Ability to support the operation, maintenance and modification of the Accelerator complex equipment at C-AD. This work includes prototype machining, assembling, testing, troubleshooting, modifying equipment of various types
Competency in machining (lathe, mill, drill press, etc.) and machine shop operations
Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and follow assembly instructions.
Ability to work independently, offer technical solutions and solve problems with minimal supervision
Experience with soldering of pipe, tubing and solid assemblies
Ability to work hands on with mechanical equipment and work as a team to develop and build unique equipment
Knowledge of rigging techniques, machining practices, welding, piping systems installation and electrical control systems
Ability to lift tools, materials and equipment up to 30 lbs, climb ladders, work outdoors in various weather conditions, work in an industrial environment (including radiation areas) and be available for on-call or overtime work.
Excellent written and oral skills
