The University of Virginia, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, is seeking applicants for a Mechanical Engineering Technician position at the Center for Applied Biomechanics (CAB).
Responsibilities will include managing, supervising, and assisting with various research projects related to injury biomechanics. This will include project planning, execution, data analysis, and report preparation. This will also include supervising mechanical and biomedical engineering graduate students to various degrees, from educating new graduate students on experimental techniques to supporting senior graduate students in executing projects for which they are responsible. The candidate will also have an active role in the design and execution of the experiments involving cadaveric materials.
High school diploma or equivalent with four years of experience, is required. A Bachelors degree may be considered in lieu of experience.
M.S. in Mechanical Engineering or Biomedical Engineering, with a focus on biomechanics is preferred.
Preference will be given to candidates with at least 2 years experience with each of the following (may include experience during graduate work):
Designing and performing biomechanics experiments involving the use of motion capture systems
Programming and customized data analysis with scientific programing languages such as Matlab
Preferred applicants will have experience in solid mechanics (including finite element analysis), data acquisition systems, kinematic analyses using rigid body motion transformation, device design using CAD software (e.g., Solidworks) and will have a working knowledge of human anatomy and physiology.
Demonstrated record in preparing project reports, and assisting in the writing of scientific papers is preferred.
Strong verbal and written communication skills are required.
This is a one-year term position with the potential for extension based on work performance, availability of projects, and funding.

The Mechanical Engineering Technician's primary purpose is to support product development from initial concept through launch. The support process requires mechanical aptitude, scientific reasoning with hands-on skillset. They can also be leaned on to complete manufacturing packages for procurement. The role supports and drives growth by ensuring his or her assigned tasks facilitate team goals to the "3-ONs": on-time, on-spec and on-budget. The ideal Mechanical Engineering Technician is a team player, who participates at all levels of the product development cycle and develops rapport and respect with multiple internal departments. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
CAD Drafting Discuss changes in design, method of manufacture and assembly, and drafting techniques and procedures with staff and facilitate drawing corrections or new documents.
Prototype assembly Devise, fabricate, and assemble new or modified mechanical components for products, such as industrial machinery or equipment, and measuring instruments
Testing Set up prototype and test apparatus and operate test controlling equipment to observe and record prototype test results.
Creating Operate drill press, grinders, welders, saws, lathe, or other machines to modify parts tested or to fabricate experimental parts for testing.
Minimum 2 years' experience demonstrating relevant mechanical aptitude with fabrication type equipment.
Technical aptitude in mechanical and software-based offerings. SolidWorks software and Microsoft office suite of tools, are both mandatory.
Excellent communication skills both written, verbal.
Demonstrates the ability to perform tasks with minimal oversight.
This position requires that the person be a highly organized and maintains a clean work environment.

The position will review recommended spare parts and help determine stocking requirements and also work with our Computerized Maintenance Management System to validate parts.
The student will also help analyze the criticality of spare parts for equipment and create spare parts ledgers for production equipment and apply Failure Effect Mode Analysis methods.
The position will give the student opportunities to learn and apply lean manufacturing principals within the maintenance organization.
The position will assist with and create professional and autonomous maintenance calendars.
Students will be involved in creating One Point Lessons as required.
Create power point presentations for communication of new project ideas and reports.
The student needs to have intermediate Excel skills for Data analysis and creating graphs.
- Must have experience in EXCEL, MS Word, AutoCAD or similar type of drafting program.
Applicants must be currently enrolled and pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering at an accredited school and have at least 30 semester hours prior to the start of the co-op.
Applicants must have cumulative GPA of 3.0
