Job Summary: The team member's number one job responsibility is to deliver the most remarkable patient experience, in every dimension, every time, and understand how he OR'she contributes to the health system's vision of achieving that commitment to patients and families.
Team member is responsible for performing all laboratory procedures, including quality control, specimen collection, processing, testing and reporting of lab results. Team member will also assist in the evaluation of new or modified techniques when required. They will advise and assist in the orientation and training of other personnel on equipment and software as necessary.
Qualifications: Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university in medical technology, clinical laboratory science, or chemical, physical, or biological science or equivalent required. Successful completion of NAACLS accredited Medical Technology or MT program preferred.
Experience: One year experience as laboratory tech.(Clinical internships of 12 months duration meet this requirement) preferred. Licensure/certification/registration: Technologist/Scientist Certification from ASCP(BB, C, H, MT/MLS, M, MB) or AMT MT required.
MT/MLS preferred.All individuals certified ASCP beginning January 1, 2004 must participate and maintain ASCP Board of Certification(BOC) through the Certification Maintenance Program(CMP). All individuals who are certified AMT beginning January 1, 2006 must participate and maintain AMT Certification Continuation Program(CCP) required. Additional skills required: New graduates must obtain certification within 12months of hire.
Failure to do so will result in termination of employment. All individuals who are newly certified ASCP beginning January 1, 2004 must participate and maintain ASCP Board of Certification(BOC) through the Certification Maintenance Program(CMP). All individuals who are newly certified AMT beginning January 1, 2006 must participate and maintain MT Certification Continuation Program(CCP).Knowledge of current medical terminology to perform full range of laboratory tests. Responsibilities of the Medical Technologist, MLT(ASCP) or MT(ASCP)
- The Medical Technologist performs various clinical laboratory tests to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of diseases by following procedures and operating equipment as directed.
- The MT/MLT also performs and records test results, quality control and performs preventative maintenance on instruments. As needed, the MT/MLT will help prepare tissue for the pathologist.
- ASCP certification and will consider new grads if completed a clinical in a high volume lab.

- ROLE OVERVIEW:
In cooperation with the department supervisor, the medical technologist instructs and performs routine and special laboratory assays of patient specimens in designated disciplines including chemistry, hematology, coagulation, immunology, urinalysis, microbiology, blood bank and phlebotomy. The medical technologist follows established standards and policies, reviews patient results for accuracy and diagnostic correlation, uses independent decision making skills, and communicates with a variety of customers. The standard of ethical and professional performance must be consistent with established medical laboratory practice and demonstrate the philosophy of Mid America Clinical Laboratories in the performance of all duties.
Minimal requirements must be met to fulfill the Primary Role Responsibilities. These requirements are reflected in the Experience Required and Skills Required sections as well as on the Physical Requirements and Environmental Worksheet.
Baccalaureate degree in Medical Technology of Laboratory Science with one year internship from an accredited School of Medical Technology. BS/BA in Laboratory Sciences with 5 years clinical experience. Certified Medical Laboratory Technologist (ASCP) and meets qualifications to be a general supervisor under CLIA'88 regulations.
It is required that graduates of an MLT program have attended a program that is accredited by NAACLS. Certification as a Medical Technologist, MT(ASCP), CLS(ASCP), MLT(ASCP), (AMT) or equivalent.
Ability to communicate and instruct effectively, perform independent technical and ethical decisions, operate simple and high complexity instrumentation, perform simple and high complexity manual and automated procedures, organize to perform multiple tasks simultaneously for maximum efficiency, demonstrate knowledge of theory, principles, and techniques of laboratory medicine to provide services appropriate to the age of the customer served. Refer to the competency addendum for applicable age-specific skills.
Perform advanced clinical procedures in all applicable areas of the laboratory. Perform complex testing procedures and report the results to medical authorities for evaluation for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment.
Perform immunological procedures, such as tests for syphilis, serological diagnosis of infectious mononucleosis, streptococcal infection, and other disease states;
Perform immunohematological procedures, such as direct and reverse typing, antibody identification and other essential procedures;
Perform bacteriological procedures on specimens as submitted for culture with subsequent identification of the organism present and determination of antibiotic sensitivity of the organism;
Perform diagnostic procedures in urinalysis, such as microscopic examination, evaluation of physical properties, and determination of chemical constituents;
Perform clinical chemistry procedures for diagnosis and evaluation of chemical constituent imbalances; Perform diagnostic procedures in hematology, such as complete blood counts, sickle cell evaluations, and other tests as may be pertinent to hematological diagnosis;
Supervise laboratory personnel in the absence of supervisor;
Maintain equipment to perform accurate test results;
Maintain accurate records of tests;
Monitor use of, and reorder, supplies;
Perform related duties as required.
Completion of a bachelor degree in biology, microbiology, or a related field with an additional one to three years of experience as a Medical Technologist or Cytotechnologist; or any combination of relevant education and experience which provides the following:

Under the operational supervision of the Supervisor Main Laboratory and Senior Medical Technologists, the Medical Technologist is responsible for the independent performance of all procedures and related support functions for all tests offered in their clinical area on prenatal through postmortem patients in a timely and accurate manner. The incumbent performs duties and tasks in accordance with standards established for the job.
The incumbent may have access to highly confidential patient, employee and/or Mercy proprietary information, and must handle & protect the information in accordance with hospital & system policies, HIPAA requirements and the highest level of ethical standards. The incumbent is responsible for reporting all security events, potential events, or other security risks to the organization. Medical Technologist certification with the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (MT ASCP) following one-year of hire is required or similar educational backgrounds grandfathered before CLIA 88, and/or certifications accepted by Clinical Laboratory regulating bodies will be considered. Must exhibit a high degree of professional judgment in dealing with technical and patient care problems.

Under the direction of the manager, Chief Technologist and Medical Director, the Medical Technologist performs clinical testing in one of more of the following areas: blood bank, chemistry serology, hematology, urinalysis, coagulation, special chemistry, and/or microbiology.
