Incumbent frequently works with objects weighing up to 60 pounds and on an occasional basis in excess of 100 pounds however, moving equipment will be available. Sets up and operates machine tools, such as lathes, milling machines, boring machines, and grinders to machine metal work pieces according to specifications, tooling instructions and standard charts applying knowledge of machining methods. Sets up and operates conventional or CNC equipment and offsets. Lays out metal stock or work pieces such as plates, angles, etc. to indicate location, dimension and tolerance necessary for further processing such as shearing, burning and /or punching. Also analyzes specifications and computes dimensions according to knowledge of product, subsequent processing, shop mathematics and layout procedures. Processes work orders and determines when to change out consumables. Performs operations on work pieces using assigned machine(s).
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Reads blueprints, study drawings, sketches, or job orders for product specifications such as dimensions and tolerances and tooling instructions such as fixtures, feed rates, cutting speeds, depth of cut, and determines sequence of operations, and plans layouts.
Selects, positions and secures tool in tool holder (chuck, collet, tool post, etc). Positions and secures work pieces in holding device, machine table, chuck, centers or fixtures, using clamps or wrenches.
Operates machines such as shears, cut off saws (vertical and horizontal), brakes, punch presses and form roll to cut and shape components to specified dimension.

Read and interpret blueprints, sketches or product specifications to determine sequence and methods of fabricating, bending assembling and installation/removal of light gauge metal products. Involves heavy lifting, frequent stooping or bending. Strict adherence to safety, quality standards,and good housekeeping habits, high level of critical thinking/reading comprehension, occasional travel and frequent overtime are required.
Duties & Responsibilities
Requires limited supervision/oversight. Is familiar with the trade qualifications and can perform most tasks required as a Sheet Metal Mechanic.
Must be able to understand and perform the basic set up and operation of fabrication machines and hand tools used in the trade. Read and understand basic terminology, blueprints, drawings and schematics to plan installation, modification or repair prior to commencing fabrication.
High School/GED with Apprenticeship Diploma and additional vocational courses or technical school graduate; and/or military and/or civilian experience with sheet metal/light gauge metals, in a repair department, fabrication shop or shipyard.
Must have the ability to obtain government base access.
Knowledge and practical skills tests required.
Must have at experience with hydraulic brakes and shears, rollers, torches, saws, benders and various other shop based sheet metal fabrication equipment.
Must have experience with material lay-out required for bending and rolling metal.
Must have experience with shipboard installation.
This position is considered SHOP/OUTDOORS which is characterized as follows.
Primarily outdoors or shipboard during the day and occasionally at night.
Frequently working on or near moving equipment and vibrating equipment.
Humidity is frequently above 90%.
Noise is over 85 decibels.
Light is intense/glare.
Occasional exposure to open fire/flames/sparks.
Frequent exposure to airborne dust, fumes, and gases.
Includes exposure to contaminants.
Requires working in very hot (above 90 F degrees) or very cold (below 32 F degrees) temperatures.
Includes exposure to sounds and noise levels that are distracting or uncomfortable.
Requires working outdoors in non-controlled environmental conditions.
