Position Summary
- The successful candidate will have the ability to perform multiple tasks in the preparation of Mechanical and Metallographic test samples. Primary functions will include:
o Cutting rough test samples according to instruction on a band saw
o Facing of hardness samples on a manual lathe
o Turning of mechanical sample blanks on a manual lathe
o Center Drilling mechanical sample blanks on a manual lathe
o Shaping reduced sections of mechanical samples on a computer assisted lathe
o Threading mechanical samples on a computer assisted lathe
o Cutting metallographic samples on an abrasive saw
- The highly successful candidate will also be able to perform the following tasks:
o Brinell and Rockwell hardness testing
o Mounting and polishing of metallographic samples
o Heat Treatment
o Operation of CNC cylindrical grinder for final mechanical sample
Machine operator responsibilities include:
1.) Following written procedures for sample preparation
2.) Sample identification and quality control to ensure integrity of tests
3.) Computer logging of completed work

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Responsible for laboratory preparation processes relating to failure analysis of a variety of mechanical or materials including metallographic preparation and documentation, interpretations, and testing. May include testing such as hardness and microhardness, optical emissions spectrometry, electrical testing, pressure testing. Includes in-house and field operation work with multiple sample types.
May also include operations and maintenance of the following: cutting/sectioning saws and cut off wheels, grit blasting, and use of hand and power tools.
Performs other related duties as required such as inventory of laboratory supplies, occasional travel for field work, and provide training.

Winsted Precision Ball, a division of Schaeffler Group USA, is seeking a qualified Metallurgic Quality Technician to support our Winsted, CT location.
Perform receiving inspection functions on raw material such as mechanical testing, etch inspection, metallography, material certification review, special testing as required. Initiate and document any outside testing that is required and maintain all receiving inspection records.
Perform metallurgical functions such as; preparation of specimens, microstructure evaluation, micro hardness testing. Document all lab activities. Maintain all heat treat instrumentation calibration records.

Continuous monitoring of all ASTM and UL specifications related to all our products.
Conduct/monitoring any test deemed critical by participating and witnessing validation tests at the Underwriters Laboratory.
Control and specify all the steel used in all the plants by interfacing with each steel supplier domestic and foreign.

Requirements
Minimum BS in Metallurgy or Material Science

Job Description: Arconic Cleveland Operations, a forging facility located at 1600 Harvard Ave., is seeking a Metallurgical Engineer to join its Quality Department. Under the direction of the Chief Metallurgist, this position provides technical support to metallurgical product and process controls, prepares metallurgical reports, approves quality of products produced, ensures the success of R&D efforts, and provides root causes & corrective actions of product failures. This position interacts with Quality/Metallurgical, New Product Development, and Sales personnel, and provides support to salaried production supervisors to ensure compliance with applicable customer, company, and industry standards.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Leading metallurgical control and developing processes and practices for Aluminum, Titanium and Nickel based alloy forgings. This includes developing, controlling, and troubleshooting all preventative programs and systems to improve processes, project design, and equipment performance related to metallurgical properties of products to ensure compliance with customer and industry specifications.
Determining acceptability of micro structural features of metallographic samples from production forgings per customer and company specifications.
Developing and maintaining quality assurance systems, procedures, and equipment to meet customer specifications and company quality requirements. This includes updating manufacturing/quality work instructions for specific tasks, and technical manuals for broader overview of systems.
Monitoring and adjusting the production process using statistical process control and analysis of processing parameters and metallurgical testing results to ensure that all requirements, both internal and external, are met.
Supporting salaried production supervisors in metallurgy related daily activities, including providing on-call responses to restore flow and developing/implementing countermeasures to prevent problem reoccurrence, such as with equipment malfunctions or new product set up.

MET LAB TECHNICIAN
PRIMARY DUTIES
Prepares samples for analysis/examination and carries out a diversified range of complex metallurgical services. Has thorough knowledge of specific testing area and can complete all testing with no supervision.
Perform various mechanical tests on specialized equipment, such as hardness testing, tension, tensile, resistivity, etc. Perform various metallographic and magnet tests using etchants, polishing equipment and specialized metallographic equipment. Collect and record test data obtained during the evaluation.
Makes recommendation to supervision based on recorded test data. Also responsible for tasks related to directing, training and coordinating the day-to-day activities of the Met Lab within the specific testing area.
Develop knowledge of testing procedures in other areas and may be able to complete testing in these areas.
Create LIMS (Lab Information System) tickets that accurately provide the correct work flows and required test parameters for all test specimens in the Met Lab.
Performs all other duties and special projects as assigned.

Job Description
Primary Purpose
Responsible for project work such as failure analysis, new product evaluations, and product testing which will promote Company growth, efficiency and safety. Provides technical support for operations personnel, performs on-site investigations/testing, and operates/maintains laboratory equipment and shop machinery. In addition to working with metals, the Materials Engineer may work with polymers and ceramics.
Principal Duties
Process projects through complete failure analysis cycle including: document incoming material, develop failure analysis plan, prepare samples for various tests (chemical, mechanical, metallographic), analyze data and write summary report.

Operate and maintain metallurgical laboratory equipment and supplies: mounting press, polishing/grinding stations, chemicals and etchants.
Possess ability to use and apply engineering knowledge to railroad operations to achieve project objectives with an intention to develop personal knowledge base of the railroad industry.
Provide technical expertise to solve problems related to premature failures, production, welding, heat treatment, safety, and quality.
Provide failure analysis and expert investigation pertaining to incidents, which may or may not include litigation. The incumbent must resolve questions of manufacturers' responsibility in premature service failures, and must determine whether structural components of equipment or track contributed to derailments.
Design and conduct field tests to evaluate real world environment for railroad components (including but not limited to rolling stock, maintenance of way and fixed facilities).
Provide organized, documented, traceable laboratory work with a subsequent written report that is well-documented, factual, concise, grammatically correct, and presented in a logical format.
Respond to customer needs in a timely manner and meet departmental deadlines on project work.
Interface on technical issues with all levels of Norfolk Southern management, Norfolk Southern field personnel, and representatives of other railroads and of the rail supply industry.
Provide non-destructive testing (NDT) expertise
Represent Norfolk Southern on technical and research committees.
Must be willing to travel as required.
