Materials Technician- Metallographer

Today SpaceX is actively developing the technologies to make this possible, with the ultimate goal of enabling human life on Mars. MATERIALS TECHNICIAN- METALLOGRAPHER RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide metallographic analysis and support for materials engineers and responsible engineers
Perform work and provide reports for various tests including hardness testing, grain size measurements, weld evaluations, and microstructure analysis
Schedule service contracts for equipment used in a laboratory
Work with purchasing and other departments to acquire supplies to produce metallographic sections
Expedite samples across the SpaceX campus between engineers and testing labs
Maintain and use precision calibrated tools – microscopes, micrometers, calipers, and balances
Develop detailed documentation of testing parameters, equipment setup, and other possible variables BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience working in a metallography laboratory
Associate's degree in engineering, math, or science, or three years of professional experience in a materials engineering focused role within the aerospace industry PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
Able to multitask and rapidly change roles and responsibilities while working in a fast-paced, challenging work environment
Strong computer skills including experience with Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)
Knowledge of etchants, advanced polishing techniques, and optical microscopy methods
Understanding of microstructure of common aerospace alloys, and basic fractography
Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Able to work off-shifts and available for overtime and weekends if needed (this is a non-regular occurrence)
Able to wear a respirator and other appropriate PPE for etching ITAR REQUIREMENTS:

Senior Metallographic Technician
Job Description BAE Systems Platforms and Services in San Jose, CA is currently hiring a Metallographic Technician Sr. to support the Combat Vehicles business. This job entails working as an engineering support specialist in the failure analysis laboratory. The laboratory is state-of-the-art and has been recently updated. This position supports the critical determination of the root cause and corrective action for the OEM for several fleets of military vehicles. The candidate will work closely with Material Engineers as well as a interdisciplinary teams of Design or Manufacturing Engineers to perform forensic investigations to determine the cause of failure and help determine the corrective action. This will require as received photography, macroscopic examination, metallography, microscopic examination and scanning electron microscopic (SEM) evaluation to include imaging and analysis techniques.
Typical Education & Experience Bachelor's Degree and 5 years work experience or equivalent experience
Required Skills and Education Required education: High School/GED and 11 years related experience OR Associates and 7 years related experience OR Bachelors and 5 years related experience Degree must be in Microscopy or Scanning Electron Microscopy or related
Experience with optical metallographic techniques and imaging methods is required.
Experience with scanning electron microscopy including EDS analysis methods is also necessary.
The candidate will use rough cutting tools such as saws and abrasive cutters for sectioning and have experience mounting, polishing, and etching samples for microscopic examination.
Must have experience with hardness testing (Rockwell, Brinell, Knoop), and mechanical tests such as tensile and impact.
All documentation is in digital form and stored in a Windows environment.
Maintenance of a clean, organized laboratory area is necessary as well as sample storage and data archiving.
Test results are stored on an MS Windows database.
The candidate must have excellent communication skills to related test results and documentation of images to convey results of testing any analysis to clients and engineers.
Preferred Skills and Education An AA degree in microscopy or scanning electron microscopy with 7 years of experience is preferred
Basic understanding of material science and chemistry is desired along with familiarity with metal alloys.
Ability to determine if a sample meets a specific material grade or type is desired.
Ability to read and understand blue prints is preferred.
Dimensional inspection knowledge is also desirable.
Experience with corrosion testing techniques is a plus.
Excellent communication skills to confer analysis results to the engineering team is desired.
Experience with safety procedures is desired.
