As a Metallurgical Technician, you will provide metallurgical over sight and instruction to the Shift Operating Supervisor/Crew so that the necessary process adjustments are made to deliver quality concentrate in support of pellet production, pellet quality and achieve productions targets.

Round Mountain is an open-pit mine located in Nevada, one of the best mining jurisdictions in the world. The mine uses conventional open-pit mining methods and processes ore by mill and heap leach.
The Metallurgical Technicians progress from Level I to Level V. The primary function of the Metallurgical Technician is to perform test work in a safe and efficient manner. The test work will include routine tests and project generated tests. The incumbent must possess good communication skills, be self-motivated, and well organized while continuously aligning daily functions to reflect Kinross' values.
Equipment operations – The Metallurgical Technician must be proficient in the safe use of all laboratory equipment including but not limited to; crushers, various screening devices, sample splitters, pH meters, weigh scales, drying ovens, overhead hoists, portable flowmeters, tachometer, forklifts, water deionizer, core drill, etc.
Test Work – The Metallurgical Technician will collect routine solution samples on the Leach Pads and do routine tests on carbon (size consist, density, hardness, and gold absorption) and ore (moisture content and size consist). In addition, test work will be required for various projects to improve or maintain the efficiency of ore processing operations. Example of such tests will include but are not limited to: Bottle Roll Leach Tests, Column Leach Tests, Shaking Table Concentration Tests, and Flotation Concentration Tests.
Paperwork/Reports – The Metallurgical Technician will complete all test log sheets and inspection forms in an accurate and legible manner. Reports will be written in the standard format. The Metallurgical Technician will be responsible for maintaining the Metallurgical Lab files. Training – The Metallurgical Technician will train other technicians, temporary and student labor to perform laboratory tests, equipment and tasks.
Safety/Environmental – The Metallurgical Technician will maintain an inventory of all chemicals in the Met. Lab and ensure their proper labeling. Must be familiar with safety and environmental policies and their attendant paperwork. Responsible to perform daily Workplace Inspection. Handling of cyanide and cyanide solutions is required. The necessary PPE will be used without fail.
Tech I is an entry-level position that must be taught all aspects of the job, including laboratory safety and hygiene, standard test procedures, and equipment operation and maintenance. The Tech I completes all tasks under the direct supervision of a Metallurgist or more senior Technician.
Individuals will be responsible to follow and complete assignments given to them by their supervisor. Must be capable of independent thinking and making conscientious decisions when direct supervision is not available.

Math Skills – The Metallurgical Technician must have good math skills up to algebra.
Chemistry – The Metallurgical Technician must have a good understanding of chemistry.
Troubleshooting – The Metallurgical Technician must be able to perform 2nd level maintenance and troubleshooting on pH meters and other laboratory equipment.
High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
Must be willing to advance to increased levels of responsibility within the department.
Must be and keep refreshed on chemical hazards involved with working with the types of reagents used within the Ore Processing Department.

JOB PURPOSE AND REPORTING STRUCTURE
Under the direction of the Quality Lab Manager, the Metallurgical Tech works with and guides lower level section personnel in the preparation of test samples and in the performance of metallurgical tests and analysis on a variety of materials, reporting results to appropriate personnel. The Tech maintains and operates Optical Microscopy, Tensile Testers, Hardness Testers, and CTE equipment. The Tech also assists the Section Leader in the development of new techniques.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Actively participate in EH&S initiatives and other safety related teams in the Lab.
Performs Sample Preparation including machining /operation of CNC lathes.
Prepares tensile bars and performs tensile testing at elevated and room temperature.
Prepares Precision Elastic Limit (PEL) test bars by etching, measuring and installing strain gages and performs testing of the prepared bars.
Trains Technician "B" and "C" operators in the basic skills required.
Makes precision measurements with micrometers, microscope, stage micrometers, and electrical temperature instruments while conducting tensile property testing.
Evaluates metallurgical samples for cleanliness, heat treated condition and grain size, using any of a number of different methods and assists Section Leader in the development of new techniques.
Perform CTE, and Magnetic Permeability Testing.
Maintain Quality Systems in the laboratory and assists in writing Standard Operating Procedures as requested.
Maintains sample preparation equipment, testing equipment, and cleanliness of the areas.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Requires 3 or more years experience as a Metallurgical Tech "B"; or at least 1 year of Technician B experience coupled with at least 2 years of college level metallurgical training in metallography and metals mechanical and physical testing; or has acquired proficiency in any two of the following areas: sample preparing, tensile testing or metallography.
Working knowledge of ISO 9001:2008 and Laboratory Quality Systems.
Good visual acuity and color vision.
Possess above average communication and interpersonal skills to provide internal and external customer service.
Clear analytical skills.

Under Quality Engineering supervision, Metals Lab Technicians are responsible for the receipt and quality assessment of raw materials into the plant. These materials are to be controlled through chemistry checks and applicable tensile testing. This position is responsible for management of the metallurgical services department for the ADC operation as well as technical support to engineering, quality, sales, and manufacturing. Support includes all metallurgical aspects of the single crystal, directional solidification, and equiax processes across all product lines and customers, including specialty NDT operations such as crystal verification. Metallurgical services leadership includes control of alloy and master heats, heat treatment, metallurgical evaluations, welding, and testing. Also responsible for due diligence regarding intellectual property and technology export disclosures.
Manages staff to provide timely, cost-effective, technically-competent services to ADC management/operations regarding metallurgical processes.
Establishes and maintains appropriate documentation of procedures.
Manages metallurgical services technician training and certification, equipment maintenance, purchase of equipment and supplies, relevant internal and external audits, and metallurgical process customer certifications.
Coordinates analysis and procedures according to applicable government regulations, manufacturing processes, or other considerations, and approves modification of metallurgical formulas, standards, specifications, and processes.
Performs the role of export technical focal point for ADC to establish and update procedures, conduct training, and perform due diligence to insure compliance with US government export and ITAR regulations as well as APP rules regarding intellectual property protection.
Develops, trains, and motivates employees for maximum efficiency, productivity and morale; maintains a safe working environment and insures compliance with safety policies and procedures.
Determines manpower requirements, schedules overtime, insures that required materials are ordered and inventoried and provides for equipment maintenance.
Administers performance appraisal and salary administration systems for department employees.
Drives continuous improvement in all aspects of metallurgical process operations.
Consults with technical personnel to solve metallurgical process problems, evaluating new materials, adequate tests, methods, etc. to control quality of production.
Manages group to ensure that timely, cost-effective, technically-competent services are provided to ADC management and operations regarding metallurgical processes.
Defines, assigns, reviews, approves and, in some cases, conducts technical projects and task forces with and for ADC manufacturing operations; projects and task forces include but are not limited to process improvement, manufacturing problem-solving, and failure analysis.
Provides technical support for all metallurgical process audits, both internal and external.
Ensures all customer certifications and approvals concerning metallurgical processes are met.
Motivates, develops and trains group employees; supervises work assignments.
Complies with all EHS rules required for the work environment.
Performs all other duties as assigned or required to support our business.
Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution

Bachelor's degree in Metallurgy or Materials Science
7 years supervisory experience in a technical role
Training and/or education in SPC, blueprint reading, computer systems including word-processing, spreadsheets, and technical applications.
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables
