JOB PURPOSE AND REPORTING STRUCTURE
Under the direction of the Quality Lab Manager, the Metallurgical Tech works with and guides lower level section personnel in the preparation of test samples and in the performance of metallurgical tests and analysis on a variety of materials, reporting results to appropriate personnel. The Tech maintains and operates Optical Microscopy, Tensile Testers, Hardness Testers, and CTE equipment. The Tech also assists the Section Leader in the development of new techniques.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Actively participate in EH&S initiatives and other safety related teams in the Lab.
Performs Sample Preparation including machining /operation of CNC lathes.
Prepares tensile bars and performs tensile testing at elevated and room temperature.
Prepares Precision Elastic Limit (PEL) test bars by etching, measuring and installing strain gages and performs testing of the prepared bars.
Trains Technician "B" and "C" operators in the basic skills required.
Makes precision measurements with micrometers, microscope, stage micrometers, and electrical temperature instruments while conducting tensile property testing.
Evaluates metallurgical samples for cleanliness, heat treated condition and grain size, using any of a number of different methods and assists Section Leader in the development of new techniques.
Perform CTE, and Magnetic Permeability Testing.
Maintain Quality Systems in the laboratory and assists in writing Standard Operating Procedures as requested.
Maintains sample preparation equipment, testing equipment, and cleanliness of the areas.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Requires 3 or more years experience as a Metallurgical Tech "B"; or at least 1 year of Technician B experience coupled with at least 2 years of college level metallurgical training in metallography and metals mechanical and physical testing; or has acquired proficiency in any two of the following areas: sample preparing, tensile testing or metallography.
Working knowledge of ISO 9001:2008 and Laboratory Quality Systems.
Good visual acuity and color vision.
Possess above average communication and interpersonal skills to provide internal and external customer service.
Clear analytical skills.
Practical Knowledge of PC functions a plus.
Under limited supervision, performs test/inspection per specifications and/or Nadcap requirements for hardware acceptance and/or process acceptance. Assists Metallurgist in metallurgical examinations, failure analysis and other issues related to processing and production.
1.Performs metallurgical tests in accordance with internal and external specifications for products and processes.
2.Assists in failure analysis of parts to determine cause of failure and recommend solutions.
3.Performs surface contamination tests of the heat treat furnaces.
4.Provides technical support to focused factories and R&D.
5.Processes all tests subcontracted to outside source per customer requirements, and tests requested by internal customers using computer database-Lab Request.
6.Releases all test results to Cherry intranet upon completion of review
7.Coordinates with internal/external sources for preventative maintenance schedules on all lab equipment including Scanning Electron Microscope and other analysis equipment
8.Controls and orders supplies and/or consumables as required
9.Assist Metallurgist in other test/inspection as required.
1.Complies with all environmental safe practices and regulations. Has knowledge of MSDS, all labeling and storage requirements for chemicals.
2.Performs other laboratory duties as assigned or requested.
MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
High school graduate.
Or AA/AS degree in material science or metallurgical filed preferred.
5 years experience in met lab environment
Able to read/interpret Blueprint/specification and understand the requirements
Basic knowledge of chemistry and metallurgy
Basic knowledge of metallurgical laboratory practice
Basic knowledge of special processes such as Heat Treat and surface process in manufacturing environment
Able to perform metallurgical examinations per specification and procedure

Under Quality Engineering supervision, Metals Lab Technicians are responsible for the receipt and quality assessment of raw materials into the plant. These materials are to be controlled through chemistry checks and applicable tensile testing. Technicians prepare samples for relevant test work, ensure that samples are properly routed and received in a timely manner, all related reports are completed and presented timely and accurately.

We are looking for a full-time Quality Metallurgical Laboratory Technician to join the Quality department at Arconic Lafayette Operations in Lafayette, Indiana. The role of this position is to provide Metallurgical laboratory testing to support various Arconic manufacturing locations.
