Coeur Mining, Inc., seeks a Chief Metallurgist at its facility located at 10928 Wharf Road, Lead, SD 57754.
The Chief Metallurgist will evaluate processes and provide recommendations on Carbon in Columns (CIC) and Carbon in Leach (CIL) performance. S/he will evaluate provide recommendations on gold stripping processes using the Zadra process, including acid wash process with use of acetic acid, sulfuric acid, chloridric acid, and carbon elusion.
S/he will evaluate provide recommendations on carbon reactivation processes, including temperature and retention time. S/he will evaluate provide recommendations on heap leach on-off processes, including geo-metallurgy analysis to characterize ore recoveries, evaluating deportment studies, and leaching kinetics of ore in correlation with cyanide concentration and pH. S/he will evaluate use of chemicals such as cyanide, antiscalant, sodium hydroxide, peroxide, acetic acid, hydrated lime, and calcium oxide and provide recommendations on improvements.
S/he will evaluate electrowinning process by maximizing current efficiencies and provide recommendations. S/he will evaluate pyro-refining of gold and silver concentrate to minimize gold and silver losses on slag and provide recommendations by determining proper flux, temperatures and melting time, and controlling and monitoring mercury abatement. S/he will apply metallurgy extractive and process design knowledge to: evaluate piping layout and provide recommendation on future upgrades; evaluate pump performance, de-bottleneck, assess and recommend upgrades; perform statistical data analysis and provide meaningful recommendations; review process and instrumentation diagrams; and review process flow diagrams using Oracle, Microsoft, Springboard, ARCGIS and AutoCAD software.
S/he will supervise technical personnel by prioritizing work load and creating and reviewing Standard Operating procedures. S/he will develop new analytical and metallurgical test procedures including: leach column test, bottle roll test, carbon activity test, alkalinity test, weak acid dissociable, and quality control procedure on fire assay and atomic absorption. S/he will develop field tests.
S/he will develop and manage capital projects by determining the scope of work, evaluating the internal rate of return, detailing cost estimates, developing an execution plan, evaluating and hiring contractors according to company guidelines. S/he will ensure that personnel are adhering to MSHA (30CFR) and company safety requirements. S/he will supervise 8 employees, including Junior Metallurgist, Assayer, Lab Techs I-III, and Metallurgical Tech. S/he will evaluate personnel performance and follow HR and personnel company policies.
Bachelor of Science degree or foreign equivalent in Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science or related field, plus 8 years of experience in metallurgy in a mining environment. Additionally, must have: 2 years of experience evaluating and providing recommendations on CIC and CIL performance, gold stripping process using Zadra process, carbon reactivation process, heap leach on-off process, improving use of chemicals, electrowinning process, and pyro-refining of gold and silver concentrate; 8 years of experience developing new analytical and metallurgical test procedures such as leach column test, bottle roll test, and quality control procedures on fire assay and atomic absorption; 8 years of experience applying metallurgy extractive and process design knowledge to evaluate piping layout and provide recommendation on future upgrades, evaluate pump performance, de-bottleneck, assess and recommend upgrades, perform statistical data analysis and provide meaningful recommendations, review process and instrumentation diagrams, and review process flow diagrams; 8 years of experience developing and managing capital projects by determining the scope of work, evaluating the internal rate of return, detailing cost estimates, developing an execution plan, evaluating and hiring contractors according to company guidelines; 2 years of experience using Oracle, Microsoft, Springboard, ARCGIS and AutoCAD software to manage business assets and day to day business processes; and 8 years of experience managing metallurgy teams at mine sites including prioritizing work, troubleshooting, debottlenecking, and performing evaluations.

YOUR QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
Bachelor of Science in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a closely related field
Advanced degree (MS and/or PhD) highly desirable
Minimum of four years of experience in a materials engineering role, or two years of experience with advanced degree
Expertise in a wide variety of materials, including ferrous and non-ferrous metals, elastomers, polymers, and coatings
Laboratory skills, including at least four of the following: metallography, optical microscopy, hardness testing, scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR)
Corrosion testing experience, including at least three of the following: salt fog testing, cyclic corrosion testing, potentiodynamic polarization testing, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy
Manufacturing experience highly desirable, especially with respect to process effects on material properties
Knowledge of bolted joints (fastener engineering) highly desirable
Experience with boating and outboard engines highly desirable

Reporting to the Quality Manager, the Metallurgist will effectively provide metallurgical and technical support to all aspects of manufacturing.

Perform regular process audits to assure adherence to standard procedure and analyze process optimization.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's degree in Metallurgical Engineering or Materials Science required
At least 5 years related experience with casting and hot extrusion preferred.
SKILLS & ABILITIES:
Knowledge of metallographic sample preparation, etching and the use of digital and light optical microscopes
Attention to detail
Computer proficient in Microsoft Office
Knowledge of basic laboratory safety practices
Strong communication skills
Strong mathematical skills
SPECIFIC EQUIPMENT USED:
Microscopes & Metallography Equipment
Optical, XRF and ICP spectrometers plus hardness and tensile testing equipment
Digital photography – macro and micro
Computer and computer programs

Participate on cross functional team projects to improve the overall organization and to develop a career path and leadership, with coaching and assistance by the Material Control Laboratory Manager.
