The Harnett County Public Utilities Department has a Meter Reader position available. Employees in this position are responsible for reading and recording usage of 350 meters per day at a 98% accuracy rate on an assigned route within an assigned time period.
Prompt and courteous public contact is required in answering citizens' questions about meter readings, high usage and bills. Responsibilities also include maintaining water meters and fixtures by cleaning areas around meters, ensuring lids are always fully in place, reporting leaks and reporting damaged boxes and damaged meters as needed. Team effort is needed when serving as flag man for water distribution crews and performing work in the event of absent co-workers as assigned.
Other tasks include connecting and disconnecting water service, responding promptly to radio contact, prioritizing reports of problems and investigating reported problems. An employee in this position is also responsible for maintaining safety on the job, inspecting their vehicle daily and maintaining tools and supplies on the vehicle. This position is subject to on-call and call-back work, hazards of vicious animals and working in various weather conditions. Additional job duties include other related tasks as assigned.

Physical and Environmental Conditions:
Ability to sit, stand and transport self from building to building. Employee will be subject to extreme temperatures reading and maintaining meters.
Ability to sit, bend, stoop, lift and climb into small areas. must be able to lift large valve covers. Employee may also be exposed to potentially hazardous chemicals or materials while in the field. Employee is also exposed to traffic hazards and put into potentially dangerous situations with stray animals while reading meters.
Ability to effectively communicate with citizens and employees in order to provide information on the current meter readings.
Ability to work orders and maps in order to find street locations. Skill in the use of a variety of hand tools such as shovels, meter wrenches, picks, screwdrivers and hand held meter reading terminals.
High school diploma or equivalent required plus one to three years of experience in meter reading preferred. Valid Texas driver's license required.

This is a temporary position to read gas and electric meters in the field and provide billing for customers by operating an electronic billing machine or using computer cards. To note and record irregularities and assist customers with questions or complaints.
This position is the highest of a multi-step progression and is expected to know all aspects of Meter Reader duties for the Company. Lower steps in this classification are expected to progress into all aspects of these duties.

Under general supervision, performs duties necessary to obtain water meter readings to insure accurate billing statements. Position is responsible to read routes, meet deadlines when the reads are due and syncing reads with billing systems. The position interacts with the public by respecting private property, provides information and assistance as it relates to department's policies and or services.
Examples of Duties: The Meter Reader is responsible to read and record water meter readings along an assigned route that initiate billing for utility customers.
Operate, upload and download files on a hand-held portable computer.
Enter meter readings, access information, trouble codes, and other data into hand-held computer devices designed specifically for meter reading tasks.
Take final readings for water consumption customers moving and perform rereads as requested.
Report hazardous circumstances (e.g., dangerous meter locations, vicious or dangerous animals, meter tampering, and open or broken seals etc.) to Supervisor so that condition can be remedied.
Assists with termination and restoration of water services.
Answer customers' questions regarding billing or other utility-related subjects to the best of his or her ability, refers customers to proper department to obtain answers when questions require information beyond scope of the Meter Reader's knowledge. Relays such questions to Supervisor when appropriate. Maintain, at all times, a high level of politeness and professionalism in dealing with customers.
Performs various tasks to ensure the completeness and accuracy of meter readings and investigates abnormal readings and circumstances.
Records serial numbers of newly installed or replaced meters; notes location of meters on meter book cards.
Verify readings which appear to be abnormal consumption; record possible reasons for fluctuations and report readings which appear questionable; check meters that should be off; report any illegal use of water.
Maintain City right-of-way to meters; clears mud, vegetation, debris and other matter from meter cases.
