An opportunity exists for a PhD - level researcher to develop computational multiphysics models and data analysis tools to support NETL's solid oxide fuel cells research. Research efforts focus primarily on: (1) the development of models that accurately represent relevant physical and chemical processes within a fuel cell; and (2) the calibration, validation, and utilization of those models using detailed in-house experiments and independently published reports. Among individual model development tasks, priority has been assigned to ensure that the models and tools are computationally efficient, widely accessible, and share data among discrete modules. This position will provide support to transfer existing models to a high-performance computing platform, operate the models to ensure accurate results are being obtained, apply user interfaces on models to facilitate broader accessibility, and integrate component models.
Primary Responsibilities Include:
- Generate, enhance, and increase efficiency of fuel cell component models using commercially relevant programs and modeling techniques to facilitate rapid execution;
- Establish user interfaces for various fuel cell modeling modules to permit a novice simulator to complete relevant simulations;
- Implement a methodology for data exchange between independent modules, ultimately producing a comprehensive SOFC performance model;
- Ensure that models utilize efficient computational methods, including computations in true parallel fashion;
- Utilize the developed models and tools in collaboration with other members of the NETL research group and with SOFC program partners.
These research efforts currently involve, but are not limited to, the following:
Incorporate multistep reaction mechanisms for oxygen reduction and fuel oxidation (e.g., hydrogen, methane, coal syngas) for better understanding of physical and chemical processes within SOFCs.
Develop/Calibrate high-fidelity simulations of impedance behavior and polarization analysis for cell performance analysis.
Incorporate multiple cell performance degradation modes such as grain coarsening, crack formation/electrode delamination, secondary phase formation, etc.
Establish numerical models for nanoparticle infiltration into fuel cell electrodes.
Perform Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations using commercial software (COMSOL & ANSYS Fluent) for optimum experimental design.
Optimize electrode microstructural and/or material properties based on conventional and/or novel electrode materials/fabrication techniques.
Relevant PhD degree and possess demonstrable skill in advanced mathematical algorithms and computational methods for solving complex reaction and transport problems; and 2 years prior relevant experience.
The candidate will also possess significant experience in identified computer programming (C++, FORTRAN, MATLAB) and will preferably have experience in programming simulation jobs within a high-performance computing environment (e.g. parallel processing and programming in a message passing interface (MPI) environment).
The candidate should possess excellent communication skills and should have a history of taking part in collaborations between modeling and experimental research efforts.
- 2+ years postdoctoral experience and have experience in modeling of solid oxide fuel cells in a collaborative work environment such as the National Energy Technology Laboratory.

Associate Data Scientist - Associate Statistical Modeler
Associate Statistical Modeler conducts statistical analysis and builds predictive models for a variety of performance outcomes such as risk, fraud, and collections for one or more markets including insurance, credit, telecommunication, retail, and government. Understanding of data mining, statistical methods, multiple modeling or scoring techniques
The Associate Data Scientist will design and develop analytic enterprise and cloud software data models using a variety of languages and platforms to support integration and deployment of data analytics products and solutions.
1.Will learn to utilize large data structures for data preparation, pattern recognition and analytic solution development
2.Will learn to analyze and mine large data sets to assess patterns and insights using the multiple analytic stacks such as R, Python, SAS, SQL or similar software package.
3.Degree in Quantitative disciplinary, computer science, mathematics, statistics or quantitative methods (or equivalent years' experience)
4.Fraud industry knowledge a plus
5.Will learn to work with Big Data Technologies and apply large scale Machine Learning techniques within many technologies ie: algorithms, GBM, Gradient Boosting Machine, ML, machine learning, data analytics, statistical analysis, data modeling, fraud analytics or similar technologies
6.Will build predictive models using Analytic tools, data mining statistical analysis methodologies and potentially Tableau, R, SQL, SAS, Python or similar software package.
7.Analytic experience preferred (not a requirement)
1.Conduct analysis and performance reports in support of existing and new product development, and/or customer sales.
2.With direction, develop analytic models, create and provide analysis code, and work with internal or external stakeholders to validate accuracy of production scoring code.
3.Follow established best practices in statistical work.
4.Assemble, merge, and parse large amounts of data to detect meaningful trends and patterns.
5.Provide support for client inquiries regarding score calculations or other analytic output.
6.Understand analytic plans and follow these plans by identifying and executing the appropriate statistical or modeling technique.
7.Clearly document and communicate analytic work and/or results.
8.Other duties as assigned.
Bachelor's Degree in computer science, mathematics, statistics or quantitative methods (or equivalent years' experience)
0-3 years' experience in building predictive models using SAS or similar software package.
Knowledge of statistical analysis methodologies and exposure to SAS or similar software package.
Ability to learn quickly and communicate effectively.
Fluency with Excel, PowerPoint and Word.

VP, Quantitative Modeler
Barclays Services Corp. seeks a VP, Quantitative Modeler for its Wilmington, DE location.
Duties: On behalf of a global financial services organization, develop and apply mathematical and statistical theory and methods to collect, organize, interpret, and summarize numerical data to support Comprehensive Capital Analysis and Review (CCAR) exercises.
Formulate and apply mathematical and statistical modeling, theoretical modeling, empirical-testing, and historical back-testing. Formulate statistical analysis of relevant revenue data, and document underlying model and methodology. Design, develop, implement, and validate statistical models and segmentation strategies for credit card portfolio's Pre-Provision Net Revenue (PPNR) elements including balance, payment, purchase, and interest income.
Relay complex model design and results information to senior management, bank supervisors, internal audit, model validation team, and model owners. Utilize knowledge of Credit Card and Consumer Loan portfolios, applying mathematical judgement and statistical testing, to analyze and define data requirements, business revenue segmentation, and business drivers. Adhere to model validation governance and controls and perform calibration and testing to ensure models are in compliance with company policy and SR11-7 Federal Reserve Bank standards.
Implement and test forecasting models with company statistical model development framework, integrate models with model execution framework (MEF), and facilitate usage of models in internal planning processes. Participate in regulatory exams, prepare responses to queries related to models, and perform further tests where required. Develop and maintain internal model development tools for model selection and calibration.
Guide team in conducting research with respect to industry best practices regarding statistical techniques for performing model development. Contribute to development of Quantitative Analytics department by participating in peer review, terms of reference reviews, modelling forums, and ad hoc project collaboration. Supervise and mentor between 2 and 4 junior level Quantitative Modelers.
Minimum of Master's degree, or foreign equivalent, in Statistics, Economics, Mathematics, Finance, Financial Engineering, or related field and three (3) years of experience as a Quantitative Analyst, Quantitative Researcher, Model Developer, Risk Modeler, Modeling Associate, or related occupation for a financial services organization.
In the alternative, will accept a Bachelor's degree, or foreign equivalent, in above specified fields and five (5) years post baccalaureate progressive experience in above specified occupations. Must have at least three (3) years of experience with each of the following required skills: SAS, Python, R, SQL, and C# to perform data analysis, model development, and model implementation; Regression and time series analysis; Developing and forecasting models in accordance with Comprehensive Capital Analysis and Review; Statistical Inference; Credit card and consumer loan portfolio business; Analyzing big data and structuring large database systems including Oracle, Teredata, MySQL, and SQL.
