Investigating The Utility Of Soil Moisture And Boundary Layer Observations For Weather Prediction And Land-Atmosphere Interaction Studies.
Researchers at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center have developed a high resolution land surface modeling and data assimilation system known as the Land Information System (LIS), which provides an infrastructure to integrate state-of-the-art land surface models, data assimilation and optimization algorithms, observations of land surface from satellite and remotely sensed platforms to provide estimates of land surface conditions such as soil moisture, evaporation, snowpack and runoff. LIS has been coupled to the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) regional model, to provide flexible and high-resolution land boundary conditions and fluxes for 3D atmospheric simulations.
LIS-WRF is currently used to evaluate the sensitivity of ambient weather, PBL evolution, clouds, and precipitation to land-atmosphere interactions. The primary goal of this project is to evaluate the potential impacts of new soil moisture (from the SMAP satellite) and high-resolution planetary boundary layer (PBL) observations over the U.S. Southern Great Plains on these NASA modeling systems.
Both soil moisture and the PBL are critical components of land-atmosphere interaction studies and metrics, but are difficult to measure. In summer 2015, a radiosonde field campaign was conducted at the SPG that launched hourly sondes on 12 selected dates that then provide high-resolution, hourly profiles of temperature and humidity. Likewise in Spring 2015, the SMAP mission was launched and retrieves soil moisture at high temporal and spatial resolution.
The impact of these datasets on land surface model simulations and initialization of WRF forecasts needs too be evaluated systematically vs. current approaches. This project will address these questions via LSM and WRF simulations, data assimilation, and coupled analysis techniques.
Reasonable proficiency with Fortran language and Unix environment is desirable, and experience or interest in Earth System Science (atmospheric/land surface) modeling and prediction is desirable, particularly that with the WRF model. The intern would be expected to gain significant skills in these areas during the directed research activities over the summer, but also should be motivated in these study areas such that they will have the opportunity to develop independent research goals pertaining to this work. A continuing collaboration with the intern and their institution regarding land-atmosphere interactions, observations, and modeling would be looked upon favorably.
Expected Opportunity Outcome
Research results in the form of modeling output and analyses. The proposed tasks should certainly provide enough material for a poster presentation at an AMS/AGU conference, monthly science highlight submitted to Code 610 and NASA HQ, and feedback to the SMAP and WRF communities, and an update to the GEWEX-GLASS panel and LoCo working group.
