Learn to study blueprints of Press Tools and Plastic Injection molds, and prototype parts and visualizes shape, mechanical structure, and operation of the die and mold. Understanding application of Jigs and Fixtures.
Learn machine set-ups, adjusting speeds, feeds, and depth of cut, to machined parts to specifications set forth in blueprints, drawings, engineering orders, etc.
Learn to Checks machined parts for conformance to prescribed tolerances.
May be required to operate numerical control machines.

Set-up and Safely Operate Vertical Milling Machines, Surface Grinders, Overhead Cranes, Saws.
Assemble High Cavitation Molds.

Apprentice / Journeyman Moldmakers perform a role that consists of a wide variety of tasks that are vital to learning the moldmaking process. Growing toward being highly skilled hands on machining capability and excellent planning/communication skills to ensure that the many components come together at the right time in the right condition to complete the mold on time. Learning the overall knowledge of plastic injection molds is required to thoroughly understand mold functionality and the varying levels of importance of dimensional accuracies, fits, and finishes. The Apprentice / Journeyman Moldmaker has a role to learn from and support the Lead Moldmaker. During the build, the Lead Moldmaker will assist, instruct, guide and drive you on all aspects and operations of the mold manufacturing process. Learn troubleshooting skills that are required to avoid and address manufacturing and design issues as soon as possible for corrective action. Perform hands on machining tasks with a wide variety of metal working related equipment: Mills, Grinders, Lathes, Saws, Hones, etc. Use blueprints, CAD files, written, and verbal work instructions while operating the equipment in a safe manner at the skill levels required in achieving required dimensional accuracy and productivity.
Review with the Lead Moldmaker designs on molds that are assigned to get a complete understanding of the design features of the mold and how it is supposed to function.
Log into Vantage making sure to log into the correct job#, component and operation you are working on. When you complete an operation, mark the operation complete in Vantage.
Train, guide, monitor others as requested in moldmaking related duties.
Become skilled to perform mold disassembly/assembly and machining tasks to repair molds and make engineering changes
Assist Lead Moldmakers to complete molds, repairs, or EC's as requested.
Participate in continuous improvements efforts to improve shop operations and moldmaking process.
Other shop maintenance, repairs, and miscellaneous tasks as requested.
Skills and Abilities:

The mold maker apprentice is responsible the following:
o Repair and preventative maintenance of injection molds, inserts, and related fixtures in order to ensure continuous production and a smooth operation; troubleshooting and identifying tooling issues.
o Disassembling, cleaning and assembling molds for production to achieve 100% cavitation rate at start up.

This position is responsible for supporting the Molding operation. Must have a basic knowledge of what a mold is and how it functions. This individual will collaborate and organize internal resources to complete mold maintenance work across business units in a timely and cost effective manner. Must have a big picture view of the molding operation to determine the urgency of work, understand a PM system and the ability to document and record critical data; must have a proven strong mechanical and technical background and the ability to troubleshoot and problem solve.

Disassemble molds and determine parts needing to be repaired or replaced.
Clean mold plates and all components.
Check for proper gating, venting and cooling of mold.

Polish cavities and cores to specified finishes.
Must be able to troubleshoot and analyze problems with molds.
Read and understand blueprints, sketches, and schematics relating to molds.
Have the ability to use all measuring tools (micrometers, calipers, indicators, travel dials, and their applications) to measure and determine proper mold and component fits and tolerances within .0002" to .0005".
Wire molds and read an OHM meter to understand basic electrical issues in diagnosing heater and thermal couple failures.
Construct or rebuild mold components per prints, using any or all machine tools available in Mold Repair area as well as the Tool Room.
Assemble mold and components maintaining proper dimensional tolerances.
Maintains an extremely clean and safe work area with an emphasis on 5"s.

The R&D Mold Maker is a creative, out-of-the-box mold/tool designer and mold/tool maker able to design, build, repair, and modify high-quality injection mold tooling from complex parts and molds in a fast-paced, medical device R&D environment. The R&D Mold Maker innovates and contributes to novel mold designs & approaches in a hands-on-role as part of the R&D Tooling & Molding Group.
Drives tool designs & participates in design for manufacturing (DFM).
Suggests part design, mold design, and /or process modifications to drive innovation & improvements.
Makes tools from start to finish (incl. outside purchase of bases, cavity sets, etc. as needed) via CNC machining, EDM, and other standard & non-standard techniques.
Manages tool assembly & disassembly.
