What You'll Do:
As the Lead Mold Maker, you will repair, enhance, and perform preventative maintenance on Injection Molds, Stamping Dies, End of Arm Tools and components to ensure the injection molding production runs smoothly.
Your Accountabilities in the Role:
Reviews the schedule and ensures the components and molds are production ready to meet the production schedule.
Enters purchase orders to replace components and supplies as needed.
Repairs and enhances molds to ensure the molds are available for production runs.
Performs day to day preventative maintenance as needed on the molds to keep production running smoothly at all times.
Leads and mentors tool room people to help problem-solve, train, and increase their skill set in working with the molds or doing changeovers for production.
Education: Mold Making Journeyman card preferred or an equivalent of education, apprenticeship, and/or experience.
Experience: 3-5+ years of progressive mold making/repair experience in a large, fast-paced injection molding environment preferred (must be highly skilled to work independently).
Skilled in mold repair and safely operating the tool room equipment (lathes, grinders, mills, EDM's etc), to perform work successfully. Experience in metrology and measuring tools (US & Metric), and the ability to read blueprints is important. Must have excellent math skills and be able to plan, coordinate, and prioritize multiple projects to meet production needs. Foundational understanding of Quality Systems, Safety, Lean Thinking and 5S would be strong plus.
Technical Aptitude/PC/Other: Good at Microsoft Word/Excel to correspond well with vendors, manager, and team members. Familiar with ERP systems for reviewing and entering data would be helpful.
Good verbal and written communication skills with the ability to work with all levels of the organization.

As a Mold Maker at Caterpillar Inc., you will perform a variety of manual and/or machine functions related to Coremaking such as dipping, inspecting and assembling (3 or less) cores. You will also operate and/or lock out equipment to clean molding floor and reclaim or dispose of sand in basement levels.

Senior Mold Maker
This position will require the ability to read and understand detailed blueprints, have advanced math skills, reading and using measuring instruments, a good understanding of modern machining techniques as well as good trouble shooting skills. The Senior Mold maker will be responsible to help manage and train shop personnel on new proven machining and mold making techniques. This position requires hands on experience with a history of good troubleshooting skills and to be able to determine actual root causes of product defects. Constructs, alters and repairs a variety of molds, tools, jigs, fixtures, gauges and special machines. Operates CNC and EDM equipment.

This activity is to be conducted while ensuring and maximizing safety, product, production output, housekeeping and cost control to achieve plant goals.
- Provide preventive maintenance of molds as required. Including assembling, disassembling, finishing, rust spraying, sprue brushing, water testing, checking or testing sensors on hydraulics, check ejector system, slides, switches, hydraulic cylinders and motors, cleaning molds, and lubrication.
- Create, inspect, test, maintain, repair and make modifications to tools and molds as required. Tasks may involve but are not limited to grinding, EDM, milling, drilling, polishing, engraving, turning, welding, replace, finishing, rust spraying, lubricating, cut and/or measure new ejector pins, and disassembling and assembling of molds
- Identify changeover parts. Remove, clean and store pieces not needed in proper location. Change cavities, cores, ejector pins and medallions.
- Inspect all parts received as listed, measure core sizes, water flow test, check hardness, check venting and ensure proper engraving.
- Conduct major mold repairs and simple repairs to press as required
- Work with Setup Technicians to complete required administrative details such as but not limited to recording notes and comments within the MES database.

Works in a fast paced collaborative team environment with an NPD Engineer and a Tooling Engineer to review and refine part and mold designs, and program and operate all tool room equipment including a high speed 5-axis CNC machining center to build new fast track plastic injection molds in 8 weeks or less.

Performs technical injection mold making assignments to support the manufacture of molded parts in our Molding Shop.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS PERFORMED
Cleans and maintains molds used in the manufacture of molded parts.

Senior Tool & Die Maker
Summary of Job Purpose:
The Senior Tool & Die Maker will work under minimal supervision and be responsible to. Support the timely manufacture and maintenance of high precision, multi-station, progressive press-tools for electronic components.
They will ensure that production parts meet drawings and specifications and be sure the completion of tasks, are efficient to support production schedules. Troubleshoot, repair and maintain the press-tools in a production environment. Support punch press operators for set up and processing of production orders. Apply knowledge of tool design, shop math, material properties, fabrication and assembly to utilize Tool Room equipment including computers, machines, tools, instruments, gages, etc. for designing, fabricating or repairing production tooling.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Plans the layout, fabrication and assembly of production machining tooling, such as holding and checking fixtures, machining jigs, forming dies, templates, molds centering and locating devices, production and inspection gauges and special machine accessories and attachments.
Works from tool design drawings, sketches, part or part print, or verbal information as to purpose or function of tooling.
Supplies information lacking on the design, print or sketch.
Makes determinations as to tooling materials most suited, material processing required, type of tool construction, reference and coordination points which must be held, lay out machining, assembly, finish and tolerances required.
Lays out details of tools preparatory to machine or other tool fabrication operations required.
Makes such tools as drill jigs, checking fixtures, and drill plates involving irregular contours and locating points in more than one plane, fixtures for holding compound angle cuts to true planes, multiple purpose fixtures, forming stage dies, molds, quick change chucks, centering and locating devices and special production and inspection tooling.
Sets up and operates any machine tools as required in the fabrication of tooling and in proving of tooling (i.e., lathes, mills, grinders, etc.)
Improvises minimum cost tooling for one-time or rush jobs.
Designs, builds, fits and assembles components according to assembly blue-prints, manuals, engineering memos, sketches, and knowledge of machine construction to construct prototype machinery, using hand tools and power tools.
Performs all set ups without assistance according to blueprint specifications.
Sets up compound and progressive dies for multiple action, toggle and punch presses when required with no assistance.
Minimum 8 years of experience as a Tool & Die Maker, along tool & die apprentice training or equivalent.
High School diploma or GED equivalent
Experience in an aerospace manufacturing environment
Assembly with small parts experience
Legally authorized to work in the US without company sponsorship

Skills and Abilities:
Ability to plan the construction of tooling, working from tool design, part or part print or functional information.
Knowledge of machine shop theory and practice.
The employee may be required to work beyond normal working hours from time to time as the workload dictates.
Ability to lay out parts in detail for required machining operations.
Must be familiar with the general composition of tooling steels, machinability of metals, effect of heat treat on steel.
Experience with reviewing drawings and schematic layouts.
Ability to set up and operate basic and special purpose tool room machines.
Ability to do hand and machine work to precise tolerances.
While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms.
The employee must lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.
The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
