Mold & Tool Maker
Job Description:
POSITION SUMMARY:
The primary responsibility of the Mold & Tool Maker is to Construct, modify, repair and clean molds for use within the production workforce.
ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Interpret instructions, drawings, sketches and work orders from received from Production personnel/supervision, and Engineering.
Plan and determine working procedure for tools and material requirements. Manufacture tools, jigs and fixtures needed to complete assigned tasks. Develop sketches of parts and perform layout as required. Calculate and determine dimensions and indices. Use data, shop formulas and reference material as required.
Select and grind tools for the job considering hardness, machine ability, desired finish and other properties of parts to be machined.
Set up and operate all machine tools common to the trade. Adjust stops, feeds, speeds and indexing, tapering or threading attachments to perform all types of operations for which the machine is adapted. Machine and hand finish part to precision tolerances and required surface. Use precision measuring instruments. Create and use CNC programs as required.
Assemble, fit, align and adjust parts to required tolerances.
Perform routine maintenance of equipment and tooling, including preventive maintenance and maintaining cleanliness of equipment and work area.
Follow all safety requirements and OSHA standards.
Job Requirements
IDEAL EXPERIENCE:
The ideal candidate will have 2-4 years of experience in an injection molding tool/die construction facility and able to demonstrate solid experience with the following:
Machine shop equipment (CNC, mill, lathe, grinders, EDM, welders, etc.)
Tool prints
Tool steels (selection, working/machining, heat treat, compatible materials)
Root Cause Analysis
Metrology equipment (calipers, micrometers, hardness testing, etc.)
QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma or equivalent
A minimum of 2-4 years' mold making and repair experience.
Mechanical skills to operate applicable machines, tools and equipment
Mathematic skills to calculate and determine dimensions, tapers, indices and formulas used in the industry
Strong knowledge of machine shop and tool room practices.
Strong knowledge of various material properties, the principles of application as well as the operations of various types of tools, fixtures, dies, instruments and machinery.

Position Summary:
The Apprentice/Trainee is responsible for the repair and preventative maintenance of injection molds, inserts, and related fixtures in order to ensure continuous production and a smooth operation; troubleshooting and identifying tooling issues. Disassembling, cleaning and assembling molds for production to achieve 100% cavitation rate at start up. Setting up and operating tool room equipment, including lathe, mill, and surface grinder. This position is responsible for supporting the Molding operation. Must have a basic knowledge of what a mold is and how it functions. This individual will collaborate and organize internal resources to complete mold maintenance work across business units in a timely and cost effective manner. Must have a big picture view of the molding operation to determine the urgency of work, understand a PM system and the ability to document and record critical data; must have a proven strong mechanical and technical background and the ability to troubleshoot and problem solve.
Must have the ability to run machine tools in the shop, (mills, lathes, grinders, torches, heat treat, saws, and CNC equipment) as well as thorough knowledge of steels and applications as well as a basic concept of electrical
RESPONSIBILITIES
Disassemble molds and determine parts needing to be repaired or replaced.
Clean mold plates and all components.
Check for proper gating, venting and cooling of mold.
Record and maintain all maintenance documentation as required.
Polish cavities and cores to specified finishes.
Must be able to troubleshoot and analyze problems with molds.
Read and understand blueprints, sketches, and schematics relating to molds.
Have the ability to use all measuring tools (micrometers, calipers, indicators, travel dials, and their applications) to measure and determine proper mold and component fits and tolerances within .0002" to .0005".
Wire molds and read an OHM meter to understand basic electrical issues in diagnosing heater and thermal couple failures.

Assemble mold and components maintaining proper dimensional tolerances.
Maintains an extremely clean and safe work area with an emphasis on 5"s.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
Plans, sets-up and performs machine and bench operations necessary to make, alter or repair molds, jigs, fixtures, dies, and gauges of complex design.
Utilizes CAM software to efficiently and accurately transform computer designs into tooling.
Operates tool room equipment in a safe and efficient manner consistent with company policies and procedures as well as industry standards.
Independently coordinates priorities and details of work to be performed with supervisor and the Manufacturing and Engineering departments.
Utilizes ERP system to obtain information for performing job duties and to provide feedback on work performed.
