Job Description: :
Determine and select proper rigging and boom and clutch adjustments depending on weight, shape and size of load, clearance, speeds and distances of operations involved
Perform such typical operations as operating cranes to lift, move, and position all types of cargoes including such items as machinery, missiles, missile assemblies, tooling, ordnance items and test vehicles
Check and adjust boom rigging
Check and adjust clutch and brake settings
Change booms, hog rods and hoist line
Rig loads to be moved
Loading and offloading of ordnance assemblies from submarine and support ships

This position is located in the Maintenance Division, Mechanical Branch, Heavy Equipment Section, Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation, Massena, NY.
The position is established to operate cranes, derricks and mobile cranes and a variety of engineering and construction equipment. This announcement establishes an open continuous (10-month) Standing Register for Crane Operator positions. This register will primarily be used to fill temporary positions for additional coverage during our winter work maintenance period and for various work projects. But, in rare instances, could be used to fill a permanent or term position if needed. Applications will be forwarded on an "as needed" basis.
You will operate cranes, derricks and mobile cranes, and a variety of engineering and construction equipment. THE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION ARE:
Operates all hydraulic cranes with various attachments to lift equipment, personnel and material at or near crane capacity. Accuracy is critical and worksites restrict maneuverability requiring extreme boom lengths and angles.
Operates conventional cable cranes where placement of crane, boom angles and capacity are not critical.
Operates hydraulic crane on buoy barge to place and remove all buoys. Operates buoy barrage crane to pick other equipment, personnel and material as required within the capacity of the crane. May serve as deckhand on gatelifter.
Performs daily maintenance on equipment checking oil/water levels, greasing/cleaning as needed, filling reservoirs, checking gauges, air pressures, etc.
Inspects equipment observing conditions of cables, clamps, outriggers, attachments, moving parts, running gear, etc. Makes minor adjustments and reports all major maintenance or possible safety problems.
Determines and selects the equipment and attachments appropriate to the job at hand. Positions cranes accordingly and changes and/or directs changing of boom segments and rigging.
Operates fifth wheel or tractor trailer type vehicle to transport engineering equipment and/or other materials and equipment.
Operates single body type trucks of unlimited capacities to haul materials/equipment including hazardous materials such as petroleum products.
Loads material with equipment such as front-end loader, backhoe, crane, etc. ensuring proper load distribution.
