Music Teacher And Liturgical Musician
Job Description:
The Music Teacher and Liturgical Musician is a person of prayer, is sensitive to the cultural experience of parishioners, and understands their spirituality and worship life.
Minimally, a Bachelor's Degree or equivalent is required, even though a more professional qualification, such as the equivalent of a Master's Degree in music and liturgy, is preferred.
Competencies and skills
- Is knowledgeable of and comfortable with Church music literature in all forms and styles for the congregation, choirs (adult, teen, and children), vocalists, and instrumentalists.
- Is proficient in liturgical principles.
- Has a thorough understanding of the musical, liturgical, and pastoral judgments which must be made in selecting music for liturgy.
- Is proficient in at least one performance area (e.g., keyboard, choral, voice).
Music Teaching at the Grade School
Provides liturgical formation, music education, and practical preparation for liturgical celebration for cantors/leaders of song, choral, and instrumental groups.
- For example, weekly lessons (per grade) on seasonal music of the liturgy - Songs for processions, songs for communion, songs for recessional and special occasions
Serves as a resource consultant regarding music, helping to educate staff, ministers of music, and congregation in developing their potentials to understand the role of music in worship and to celebrate liturgies of musical quality.
- For example, Confirmation, First Communion, May Crowning, Graduation and other sacraments and special celebrations
Keeps abreast of current developments in liturgy and in music.
- For example, incorporate participation in special events in the broader archdiocese with our school music program
Liturgical Musician
- Provides music and musicians for all Sunday and other major celebrations, including weddings, funerals, etc.
- Builds repertoire and encourages participation of parish community in singing at various liturgies.
- Acts as consultant to parishioners for planning sacramental liturgies, e.g., weddings, funerals, baptisms, etc.
Additional Responsibilities
Collaborates with the Principal, Pastor, and Director of Religious Education (DRE), under their supervision, and with other members of the parish staff to coordinate and ensure appropriate music for all parish sacramental celebrations, and provides them with consultation and needed assistance.

Boston Conservatory at Berklee is now accepting applications for the position of Chair of Instrumental Studies. Located in Boston, Massachusetts, Berklee is the world's largest independent music college; the Boston Conservatory is the United States' longest-established Conservatory, with undergraduate and masters programs in music/dance/theater. The two institutions merged in 2016. The Berklee community consists of over 5000 talented and diverse students, 840 internationally respected faculty, over 600 dedicated staff, and an extended family of alumni.
The Conservatory's Instrumental Studies department incorporates wind, brass, strings, percussion and piano; the Chair oversees a team of 50 full- and part-time faculty.
The candidate should be an outstanding musician with performance experience at a high level, and an experienced educator and effective administrator with a background of successful employment in a collegiate setting. Thorough understanding of a wide variety of music and national recognition as a musician are essential. A Master's degree or equivalent professional experience is required.
Instrumental Studies
The Chair of Instrumental Studies oversees all Conservatory instrumental activities from individual applied lessons to the management of large ensembles, including orchestra, wind ensemble, brass ensemble, percussion ensemble, chorale, sinfonietta, and ensembles required for Theater division and Dance division mainstage performances. Instrumental Studies comprises 13 full-time and 37 part-time faculty, providing applied lesson and ensemble instruction to over 200 Boston Conservatory at Berklee students.
This is a twelve-month position. Initial appointment is for three years and will start September 1, 2018 depending on availability. Compensation is commensurate with professional experience.
Responsibilities include:
Management, supervision, and evaluation of instrumental area Program Directors
Supervision, evaluation, and development of faculty
Management of area budget and facilities
Management of instrumental and vocal large ensembles
Management, supervision, and evaluation of Ensembles Coordinator
Management, supervision, and evaluation of Instrument Librarian
Coordinate casting in collaboration with program directors
Oversee scheduling for all large ensemble rehearsals and performances
Oversee hiring of guest conductors and soloists
