CRNAs provide anesthesia services to patients of all ages at Strong Memorial Hospital and the Ambulatory Surgical Center at Sawgrass under the medical direction of members of the faculty of the Department of Anesthesiology of the University of Rochester Medical Center. They are an integral part of the surgical team working closely with anesthesiologists, surgeons, and operating room nurses and other healthcare professionals. They provide anesthesia care for ENT, Plastics, Ophthalmology, Urology, Orthopedics, GI, OB/GYN, Transplant, Cardiac, Pediatric, Dental, Thoracic, Vascular, Trauma and Burns, and General Surgery patients.
Conducts and maintains the anesthetic as evidenced by:
Selects and implements appropriate anesthetic agent.
Initiates and maintains patient ventilation when appropriate.
Provides for protection of the patient's eyes and pressure points when appropriate.
Observes and records the effects of ambient temperature on the patient when appropriate.
Evaluates the adequacy of anesthetic depth.
Evaluates, records, and treats any cardiovascular dysrhythmia.
Evaluates, manages, and documents fluid and electrolyte status.
Identifies and determines the need for blood component therapy.
Effectively adjusts the anesthetic to meet requirements of patient need.
Evaluates the need for drug antagonism and reversal.
Recognizes and reports any abnormal patient responses.
Administers/Induces Anesthesia as evidenced by:
Provides an appropriate general anesthetic (i.e. rapid sequence)
Establishes and maintains patient airway with OETT, while minimizing laryngoscopy time, establishing tube placement within 30 seconds, observes and affirms tube placement (breath sounds, ETCO2 level, capnograph pattern).
Establishes regional anesthesia in a safe and timely manner.
Other duties as assigned.
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or other appropriate baccalaureate degree. At least one year of experience as a registered nurse in an acute care setting. Graduation with a minimum of a master's degree from a nurse anesthesia program accredited by the Council on Accreditation of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists. Pass the national certification examination within 24 months after graduation. Current New York State Registered Nurse's License. Maintenance of current recertification requirements of the Council on Accreditation of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists. Maintains at least 40 hours of continuing education every two years.

Provides quality anesthesia and analgesia care to patients while under the medical supervision of an anesthesiologist in accordance with professional standards and established procedures.
A Nurse Anesthetist administers anesthesia under medical direction for diversified surgical cases, utilizing inhalation, intravenous, spinal or rectal agents. Emphasis in the work is on skilled application of appropriate professional techniques, constant review of anesthetized patients' condition during surgery, and completion of remedial measures to counteract unfavorable clinical conditions.
Incumbents are also responsible for immediate preoperative and postoperative care of patients in the introduction of and recovery from anesthesia. Work is performed in accordance with recognized professional principles and techniques. All procedures and techniques utilized during anesthesia for surgery are subject to supervision by the Attending Anesthesiologist assigned to that area.
Master's degree required. Florida licensed RN/CRNA or eligibility for licensure as CRNA/Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner.
National Board Certification by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists. American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification with at least 6 months validity required. Twelve months experience as a CRNA preferred. (steps per CBA side letter agreement p.67). Ability to demonstrate literacy in using computerized information systems.

PURPOSE OF POSITION: To work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary health team to provide anesthesia coverage under the direction of an anesthesiologist for patients of a Medical Center dedicated to the care of infants, children, adolescents, and some adult patients. Provide leadership through education and consultation.
- Preoperative Assessment/Evaluation:
Conduct preoperative evaluation: assess condition of patient and plan appropriate anesthetic technique in consultation with attending anesthesiologist.
- Process Improvement:
Participate in improving organizational performance through recommending areas or approaches for improvement activities, performing new procedures, collecting data and providing input to department discussions.
Prepare appropriate equipment for administration of anesthesia. Process involves, but is not limited to, checking machines, appropriate small equipment, blood pressure cuffs, endotracheal tubes, and drugs for the conduit of anesthesia. Report any malfunctioning equipment
- Postoperative Follow-up:
Conduct postoperative follow-up in consultation with the attending anesthesiologist. Accompany the patient to the PACU assuring that the patient's condition is optimal. Visit in-house with the patient within 24 - 48 hours following anesthesia to assess post-anesthetic recovery.

Participate in call coverage with faculty anesthesiologists.
- Professional Development:
Direct or facilitate the development of internal or external professional programs and projects. Pursue opportunities for professional growth, including continuing education requirements for licensure and certification and apply this knowledge to the care of patients.
With the approval of the Department of Anesthesiology's Research Committee, direct and/or facilitate the development of research projects within the Department and/or the Medical Center. Adhere to all CCHMC and regulatory requirement with respect to the conduct of research activities.
Comply with policies and procedures protecting patient rights for informed consent and the handling of confidential information as defined by Cincinnati Children's mission and applicable laws and regulations. Review timeliness, accuracy, availability and security of information. Follow Cincinnati Children's established code of ethical behavior in decisions and actions regarding marketing, admission, transfer, discharge and billing.
- Intraoperative Clinical Care:
Administer anesthesia only under the direct supervision of a faculty or staff physician anesthesiologist. Administer anesthesia, giving drugs and monitoring vital signs and other indicators of anesthesia's effects on patients. The regular, frequent and accurate recording of patient's condition during and immediately following the administration of anesthetic drugs is required.
